Welcome!
Today’s offering in “What’s New in Music” is a four-piece psychedelic garage
band out of Nashville Tennessee called “CHICO”.
“CHICO”
just released a two song “split EP” with the progressive rock band called “Phobos”
on July 28th, 2017 that should wake a few ears by its outstanding creativeness.
The music certainly deserves a closer look / listen by music fans and radio DJ’s,
and so, here it is, under the World United Music spotlight on “What’s New in
Music”.
CHICO’s
2 song “Split EP”
The
opening song, “Twilight Ravine” is a real trip of a tune that comes out of
nowhere to pick up your rock sensors with its driving beat, guitar rhythms and refreshing
leads. One listen wont be enough as the song picks up your consciousness and
merges your being with music euphoria through its subtle psychedelic changes
that will have your mind speeding down roads, surfing the waves and travelling through
space. “Twilight Ravine” is food for the mindful music starved and an excellent
song that should jump start the band out of the gates to a wider audience.
“Twilight Ravine” is certainly on this DJ’s playlist!
The
second song, “Prayers for the family” is a unique tune that demonstrates the
bands mastery of its garage rock roots. The song combines its signature garage sound
with a seemingly slowed down punk rock beat as a carrier that borders on Pop
but changes with a twist of psychedelic fusion to round out this excellent song
and “Split EP”.
I
have “Twilight Ravine” and “Prayers for the Family” already mixed and playing
on my car’s CD player…ok, so I have an old car but I love the music blasting
from its speakers. 😉
Check
out CHICO’s two song EP below and then go over to the bands facebook page and
give them a, thumbs up. Better still, pick up the bands music on Bandcamp and
then go over to Facebook and give them the thumbs up.
Be
sure to share this post with your network of friends and fans so that we can get
this music revolution started!

Known for dramatic performances as well as subtle, varied
recordings, Seattle experimental rock ensemble Midday Veil combines intense
vocals and cosmic synths with hypnotic rock grooves to produce music that
rewards careful listening and defies easy categorization.
The band began in 2008 as a collaboration between vocalist
and multimedia artist Emily Pothast and classically-trained pianist / analog
synth head David Golightly. In early 2009, Midday Veil's sound was catalyzed by
the addition of prolific multi-instrumentalist Timm Mason on baritone guitar,
bass, and modular synth. Bassist/guitarist Jayson Kochan joined the band in
2011, and in 2012, Garrett Moore replaced original drummer Chris Pollina. Percussionist
Sam Yoder has also performed and recorded as a member.
Midday Veil's debut studio album Eyes All Around (2010) and
ecstatic improvised cassette releases Subterranean Ritual II (2011) and
INTEGRATRON (2012) established the band as a multifaceted entity with roots in
synth pop, psychedelic rock and free improvisation. Produced by Randall Dunn
and featuring artwork by Robert Beatty, Midday Veil's 2013 studio LP The
Current harnessed the experimental intensity of earlier releases with an
intensified focus on songcraft. The Current found its way onto a number of
year-end lists, including a mention by The Wire as one of the top avant-rock
albums of 2013.
In 2014, the band returned to the studio with Randall Dunn
to record its third LP (and first with drummer Garrett Moore) This Wilderness,
was released in September 2015 on Brooklyn-based label Beyond Beyond is Beyond.
A strong live act, Midday Veil has toured the US regularly
since 2009, notably opening for krautrock legends Faust on a Northwest tour in
2012. Festival appearances have included SXSW, Bumbershoot, 35 Denton, Treefort
Festival, Hypnotikon Festival, LA Psych Fest and Vancouver Psych Fest.
Yuri Gagarin are a Progressive, Psychedelic Rock band from
Gothenburg Sweden that formed in 2012. The bands music blends several genres
into one driving force that has garnered them a wide fan appeal across the
shoegaze, psychedelic rock, progressive rock and heavy rock circles.
Their self titled debut album “Yuri Gagarin” was released in
2013 and received high praise by their fans. September 25th, 2015
saw the release of a two song EP titled “Sea of Dust” and it didn’t disappoint
either, as their fans have heaped much praise on this solid emerging band from
Northern Europe.
Yuri Gagarin’s music will remind seasoned fans of the 70’s
iconic trend-setting group “Hawkwind” with their space driving progressive
psychedelic driving sounds. Have a listen and catch the wave!
Joshua is a modern folk musician from Abbotsford, British
Columbia, Canada, an amalgam of influence in the classically romantic tradition
of Damien Rice, Ryan Adams, Iron and Wine, and Sufjan Stevens. Like the said
ballyhooed folksters before him, Joshua is inspired to write largely as a
result of the people and relationships surrounding him, while also subjecting
his songs to his own vulnerabilities, doubts, and conflicts. He integrates
these revelations with his agenda of lyrical candidness, creating an expressive
and open artform.
With all of Joshua's ability and potential, what really sets
him apart is his faultless ability in the live venue. Josh will silence the
crowd with his soft and consistently pitch perfect vocal control while and draw
the audience towards his unmistaken aura for being one of the good guys.
Considering the idiosyncratic confluence of ability he boasts, it is fair to
say that Joshua spins a web of charm that makes him inimitably great.

More about: Joshua Hyslop
Every songwriter finds his or her own way to summon the
muse. Some lock themselves away in a bedroom, a hotel suite, or a studio and
wait for inspiration to strike. Others deliberately choose, in the words of
Robert Frost, a road "less travelled by." Joshua Hyslop took the
latter route on his way to Where The Mountain Meets The Valley, the debut album
by the 24-year old Vancouver native. And it did, indeed, make all the
difference.
Hyslop's first forays into songwriting were the result of an
unhappy accident of sorts: at the age of 15, he moved with his family to
Scotland, where he had difficulty transitioning. "I went from attending a
school with 90 students to a public school with something like 1200," he
recounts. "And I just had a tough time dealing with that. My first year
there, I got in a lot of fights. So, I picked up a guitar that my dad had been
given and just kind of locked myself in my room for hours and hours. I wasn't
the kind of kid who was in love with music and I hadn't really ever sung in
public. I listened mostly to what my mom had…Simon & Garfunkel, Cat
Stevens. That's how I got started."
There are still echoes of classic folk in the spare,
pastoral beauty of Hyslop's acoustic guitar-based soundscapes, and in his
intimate, softly-sung delivery on the album's opening track, "Do Not Let
Me Go," a deeply felt confessional that resonates with the power of a
personal prayer. Indeed, in a move that even Hyslop felt was a bit risky, he
recorded his own bare-bones version of the Dylan classic "Shelter From the
Storm" for Where The Mountain Meets The Valley. "I was hesitant at
first," he admits. "But when you think back to the early days of
Dylan, everyone was covering everyone else's songs and it was taken as a complement.
So, yeah, I'm nervous that there are going to be people who have a problem with
it. But I did my best to do the song in my own style. It was either a brave or
very stupid thing to do," he acknowledges with a knowing laugh.
As Hyslop's interest in songwriting broadened, so did his
musical vistas. When he was 17, he discovered Damien Rice, Ryan Adams, Iron
& Wine. At which point, he began to
develop his own take on a kind of rootsy indie-folk. "I've always been
drawn to the lyrics and the sound of an acoustic guitar," he explains.
"I really like the austerity of one person on the guitar with a simple
accompaniment."
That may have been the starting point for Where The Mountain
Meets The Valley, but with the addition of strings, piano, mandolin and drums,
much of the album Hyslop lands squarely in the heart what might best be
described as artful rendered Americana. Yet, he wasn't in the heartland of
America — or his native Canada, for that matter — but halfway around the world
in a desolate part of Northern India that Hyslop eventually stumbled upon the
primary inspiration for the album. He was in the midst of recording his debut
EP, 2011's formative Cold Wind, when wanderlust struck, and he left home for
what he hoped would be an enlightening four-and-a-half month trip to the Far
East, his very own road less travelled. But the journey took an inauspicious
turn early on: abandoned for three days in a desert bordering Pakistan with no
food or water followed by a rather complicated twist of fate, Hyslop would
endure two near-death experiences that not only tested him physically, but
emotionally and spiritually, as well.
As Hyslop recounts, the wrenching yet redemptive lyrics to
"Do Not Let Me Go" — lines like "There are moments in this life
when you can't fake it/There are moments I would walk another road/There was
something in the broken way you said it/Singing 'Please, oh God, do not let me
go'" — came to him when awoke in a strange hotel room after passing out
from dehydration, discovered unconscious on a random street. "I just laid
there and felt the worst I've ever felt in my life," he details.
"Some people would call it a prayer, some people would just say it's
speaking out loud or whatever. But I was basically lying there and the words in
that song are words that I was speaking. Like, when you're almost dead, or you
feel like you're dying, or someone tells you that you came close to dying, your
real character shines through and it makes you see things in a very honest way.
There's no false humility and none of the aspects of the personas we wear
day-to-day. It's just, 'this is who I am, and this is what's happening.' So
that song is my little journal entry saying 'please do not let me die, I'm
scared, I don't know what's going on, I'm alone in a country I’ve never been
to, and I don't know what else to say.'"
Hyslop persevered and, four months later, returned home with
a new perspective on life. He also had the raw material for the eleven songs
that would become Where The Mountain Meets The Valley, including a poetically
meditative title track that captures the essence of what it's like to see life
through fresh eyes at the young age of 24. "When all that you have hoped
for/And all that you have loved, comes undone" Hyslop croons against a melancholy
backdrop of fingerpicked guitar, simple piano chords, elegant violin, and a
surging backbeat, "When faith in what you see is not enough/Don't say that
you believe, but do no love."
"I live in a valley surrounded by mountains," he
explains. "It's beautiful. But it also became a metaphor for the highs and
lows of my own life, and how dramatic they can be. In the last year, I've been
close to death twice, I've lost 45 pounds, I've been very very low, the worst
I've ever been. But, at the same time, I got signed to a record label and I got
to travel the world; I saw things that I'd never get to see normally. So, it's been an incredibly up year and an
incredibly down year. And that's really the dynamics of life.”
A young man in his early 20s, yet wise beyond his years,
Hyslop sums it up best, “it's so easy to waste time and we don't even stop to
notice it. And time really is this silent killer. You hope that you're using it
wisely and always wondering whether you could have done more."
Admiral is Prog-psych-antiquity rock from Dallas Texas.
Pulling from their collective backgrounds, both musical and
academic, Andrew Moss and Joshua Jarmon create a retro psychedelic Baroque type
of rock that is sure to capture your ears and yester-ears, not to mention your
attention.
The Band released their debut, self titled album “Admiral”
in 2014 and toured the local scene throughout the year. July 2015 saw the
release of their latest single “Mescalero” which is sure to capture the huge
psychedelic underground music scene by storm this year. Check out their music
on Bandcamp or iTunes and connect with the band on Facebook to see what the
“Admiral” is up to.
Acid Ghost is an unsigned indie alternative music project from
San Francisco, California comprised of band members Ace Barcelon and Mikey
Mendoza.
The Band released a 4 song EP in April 2015 titled “Ghosts
& Rotten Love” and soon followed it up with their debut album “Vacation” in
July 2015. Both projects were recorded in their home studio and offer a diverse
mix of genres from Dream Pop to Alternative Rock. Plans for a tour are in the
works for the near future.
Lights That Change is an alternative Dream Pop ethereal wave
outfit, hailing from North Wales and headed by Marc Joy. After many years
producing other artists, he finally turned his attention towards his own
creative endeavours. Thus was born “Lights That Change”, channelling new
energies into creating horizons of perfect dreamscapes, primarily based on
guitars.
Lights That Change released their debut EP ‘Rainbow On Your
Shoulder’ in 2013, followed by ‘Whispers in February’ and have received support
from BBC, Tom Robinson, and Amazing Radio, among others.
Over the past year, Lights That Change have undergone a
reformation, with Mandy Clare on vocals, John Bryan on bass and Marc Joy on
guitars. They are now gearing up to release their debut LP ‘Byzantium’ this
summer, which includes guest vocals from Rebecca Palin (Golden Fable) and drum
programming from Mal Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark).
“I’m extremely happy to be involved in Lights That Change,”
says Mal Holmes. “This has given me the freedom to create something special for
‘Voices’ and the new album doing what I love to do … this is why I started
playing drums in the first place”.
We proudly present the first single from this forthcoming
album, entitled ‘Voices’, chalked full of ethereal wave post-punk magic
reminiscent of 4AD’s golden era. Here Mandy Clare lays mesmerizing vocals over
a bed of drifting, powerfully moving soundscapes. Lights That Change will also
be bringing their new permanent lineup to U.K. live audiences soon.

The band’s music is reminiscent of the mid to late 60’s
psychedelic / surf music from the West coast of the US which is why they are
making a big splash in the underground music scene today with their debut self
titled EP which includes their hit single “I Would Like”.
The bands influences are many and include, but not limited

Allah-las, The Black Hollies, Night Beats, The Black Angels, The Velvet
Underground, Hunger, Eric Burdon & War, The Kinks, The Animals, Led
Zeppelin…

Muggebude Studios in Dresden Klotzsche, Mixed & Mastered by Ricardo Röpke

Big Red Panda are from the small town of “Ponte de Lima” in
the north of Portugal. The band is made up of five friends that came together
in late 2013 with the idea of creating a musical group that would gather all of
their influences and similar tastes for great music such as Pink Floyd, Kyuss,
Causa Sui, Tool, Tame Impala, Red Fang.
After almost a year of non-stop jams, rehearsals and
recordings, “Big Red Panda” was born, and so was their debut self-titled EP in
2014. The EP is filled with foot-stomping riffs, swooshes, and spacey trips
that will refresh your insides and explode your outsides.
Their music leans towards Progressive Psychedelic influences
and is well on its way to turning a lot of heads in their direction.
July 2015 saw the band release their single “High Ride” to
rave reviews and will be part of their 2nd EP which will be released
later in 2015.
Matthew Perryman Jones has a voice that calls out with
intensity, truth and emotion. Jones began his career in 1997 in Decatur, GA,
and then, after moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time, he issued his
first solo release, Nowhere Else But Here, in 2000. As American Songwriter
describes, “Matthew’s voice ensnares listeners with a rare authenticity and
gritty strength.”
In 2006, Jones released Throwing Punches in the Dark, a departure
from his previous Folk/Americana sound toward Pop Rock. In 2008, Swallow the
Sea with break-out hit “Save You,” solidified Jones as an artist worth
watching. Performing Songwriter Magazine noted Jones as a talent that follows
“in the footsteps of Leonard Cohen and John Lennon.”
In 2011, Jones released Until The Dawn Appears which
contains retellings of his most popular songs including “Save You,” whose video
features Jaimie Alexander (Kyle XY, Thor, The Last Stand). Written shortly
after his father’s death, Jones’ latest CD, Land Of The Living, is a courageous
personal Odyssey through life’s most troubled waters of love and loss.
One of the most sought-after songwriters in Nashville, Jones
builds on his accomplishments with his 2013 single, “Anymore of This.” The
duet, written and recorded with Mindy Smith, was featured on ABC Family’s
“Switched at Birth” in January.
Jones’ songs have also been featured in television shows
including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Bones, Pretty Little Liars, NY Med,
Flash Point, One Tree Hill, The Hills, and Eli Stone as well as in the 2012
movie release What To Expect When You Are Expecting.
In addition to Jones’ own headline tours, he has shared the
bill with Katie Herzig, Matthew Mayfield, and Joshua James and has opened for
such artists as Ingrid Michaelson, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Paula Cole.
Jones is also an original member of the nationally acclaimed Nashville
collaborative artist group “Ten Out of Tenn”.
The Kendricks are a Los Angeles based indie-rock band.
Throughout 2014 they developed their sound playing live shows throughout Los
Angeles and in the fall, they took time off to record the songs they had been
working on. The sessions led to two EPs. The debut EP “Farewell” is now
available.
Drawn from classic, folk, pop, and alternative rock
influences, their EP “Farewell” is a self-produced romp, chock-full of odes to
failed relationships and the crisis of human will, seasoned with oblique
references to the laws of thermodynamics and the Spanish Civil War.
The foundation for “Farewell” was laid down in two weeks at
a house on a hill in the Temecula Valley, or as google calls it,
"Tem-eh-cool-la." In between sessions, the band enjoyed rich
apportionments of cervezas and carnitas while hitting golfballs into the desert
vineyards. At night, they would recline and reflect upon the infinite stars,
listening to the mournful music of the California garbage wolf, called by some,
the coyote.
Just like their souls, the Kendricks' sound is suffused with
the lineal blood of rock' n roll from across the generations. They have many
inspirations, such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Strokes, and Bowie.
Ryley Walker is a singer songwriter guitarist from Rockford
Illinois who began his career in Chicago's independent music scene after moving
there in the early 2010s. He released several cassette EPs plus a vinyl EP and
then in 2014, released his debut album “All Kinds of You” for the Tompkins
Square label. Ryley quickly followed up his debut album with a second release
it early in 2015 with “Primrose Green” on the Dead Oceans label and has found a
growing fan base for his music.
Transcendent Frequencies comes to you from Stockholm Sweden
and is the umbrella name that connects the sub-projects of “Silent Caravan”,
“Ljusbringare”, and “SC Disco Society”.
The projects cover a spectrum of electronic sounds from
relaxing ambient meditative waves of “Ljusbringare” to the energy abundant
progressive psychedelic rock landscapes of “Silent Caravan”. All three projects
are very different but connect the dots to bring forth a wider expression of
Transcendent Frequencies. Be sure to subscribe to their YouTube Channel, and
