The Kendricks

About: The Kendricks

The Kendricks are a Los Angeles based indie-rock band. Throughout 2014 they developed their sound playing live shows throughout Los Angeles and in the fall, they took time off to record the songs they had been working on. The sessions led to two EPs. The debut EP “Farewell” is now available.

Drawn from classic, folk, pop, and alternative rock influences, their EP “Farewell” is a self-produced romp, chock-full of odes to failed relationships and the crisis of human will, seasoned with oblique references to the laws of thermodynamics and the Spanish Civil War.

The foundation for “Farewell” was laid down in two weeks at a house on a hill in the Temecula Valley, or as google calls it, "Tem-eh-cool-la." In between sessions, the band enjoyed rich apportionments of cervezas and carnitas while hitting golfballs into the desert vineyards. At night, they would recline and reflect upon the infinite stars, listening to the mournful music of the California garbage wolf, called by some, the coyote.

Just like their souls, the Kendricks' sound is suffused with the lineal blood of rock' n roll from across the generations. They have many inspirations, such as Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Strokes, and Bowie.

Band Members:

Richie Carvill - Guitar/Backing Vocals
Lee de Arakal - Drums
Kevin Hinman - Guitar
Luke Richmond - Lead Vocals
ALSO:
Steve Gergoire - Bass/Backing Vocals

Lost and Profound

About: Lost and Profound

Lost and Profound are back, and for that we can be grateful. It has been more than a decade since we have heard from the acclaimed Toronto-based duo of vocalist Lisa Boudreau and songwriter/guitarist Terry Tompkins, but new album Goodbye Mine confirms they remain at the height of their considerable creative powers.

Their previous release, Red Suede Red came out in 2002, after which Terry and Lisa turned their individual talents to their other successful musical activities (Tompkins as a composer and producer for film and TV, Boudreau as an in-demand voice actor and singer).

The itch to record together again returned, sparked in part by the fun Terry had making a new album with The Now Feeling, the Calgary-based psych band . "That went so well, I thought we should make another Lost and Profound record," he explains. "I had all these tunes that I started playing for Lisa, and before we knew it, we were working on a record.'"

The essential core of the Lost and Profound style is the combination of Terry's evocative songs and soundscapes and Lisa's pure and emotionally eloquent vocals. The potency of that musical marriage has not been diminished one iota, as Goodbye Mine triumphantly demonstrates. "We had a clear vision of the sound we wanted for the record," Tompkins recalls. "We wanted a production sound like that on all those early '70s albums we love, and we kept it simple and sparse.

Helping them realize their mandate was a supporting cast of A-list Toronto musicians, including guitarist Joao Carvalho (a long-time collaborator who also mastered the album), drummer John Obercian, multi-instrumentalist Darrell O'Dea (described by Terry as "our secret weapon," he played keyboards, drums, guitar, bass and contributed string arrangements), fiddle player Chris Bartos, bassist Greg Roberts, backing singers Renee Rowe and Kesha Wint (on "Iodine" and Bad Sister") and a string section.

Tompkins and Boudreau co-produced Goodbye Mine, with recording taking place at elite Toronto studio Revolution Recording. Lisa explains that "before going into the studio, we booked a gig so we'd learn the songs and figure out what worked.

All the bed tracks were recorded within four days. "The band's so great that we did most of it live." says Boudreau. "I did all my lead vocals in two days, so it was very focused and concentrated. The engineer was Dean Wilson, who did Beck's Mutations, and he was lovely." Revolution's house engineer (and partner in the studio) Joe Dunphy also made a major contribution, earning Terry's praise as "a wizard with guitar sounds."

The results were then mixed at Prairie Sun Studios in California by acclaimed veteran engineer Oz Fritz and old friend of Terry and Lisa's, whose lengthy resume includes engineering and mixing Tom Waits' Grammy-winning Mule Variations and albums by artists as diverse as Primus, John Cale, Herbie Hancock, Bob Marley, Bill Laswell and Wanda Jackson. Assisting Fritz in the mixing process was Terry and Lisa's son Jody Tompkins, an up and coming audio engineer. "In the morning, we'd all listen to the songs and Terry and I would say 'this is what we want here,'" recalls Lisa. "Then we'd go away for awhile and take advantage of California's medical marijuana laws. Then we'd come back at the end of the day to do minor tweaks to what Oz and Jody had done... and then we'd all go for dinner.

The mixing and mastering for Goodbye Mine was done to tape, with a view to the vinyl pressing of the album. "This will be the first time we've done vinyl for a Lost and Profound album, and that is really exciting," says Terry. The warm and intimate sound of vinyl is indeed the perfect medium for the record. There is a pleasing sonic excellence to Goodbye Mine. The full-blooded backing vocals on Iodine" and "Bad Sister" impart a gospel vibe, while the beautifully affecting and folk-inflected "The Rover" has a Celtic feel enhanced by the masterful fiddle playing of Chris Bartos. "I wrote 'the Rover' when Lisa's aunt died," Terry recalls. "I wanted a song that talked about dying as a journey. One verse was recited at her aunt's funeral, and I later finished all the lyrics in one night."

Tompkins takes the vocal lead on the aptly-named "Jewel," an upbeat track with a California Sunshine pop vibe, while the lush "Superhuman" brings classic Fleetwood Mac to mind. Soaring guitars, evocative strings and backing vocals mesh with Lisa's passionate vocal performance on "Goodbye Mine," another highlight on an album devoid of lowlights.

Some 30 years of living and making music together has inevitably meant that Terry and Lisa have forged a beautifully idiosyncratic Lost and Profound sound, but they're not afraid to cite musical influences and inspirations. For the new album, Terry singles out Pink Floyd. "We referenced them over and over in the making of this record," he notes. "Darrell's slide guitar playing on 'Iodine' is very Floyd." The ability of Pink Floyd to create a huge sound in a sparse manner is certainly replicated on Goodbye Mine.

Other key inspirations include Leonard Cohen, Lee Hazelwood, Jimmy Webb and Townes Van Zandt. More contemporary sonic reference points would include Elliott Smith and such so-called 'slo-core' artists as Mazzy Star, Low and Red House Painters, while the haunting purity of Lisa's vocals has elicited comparisons to the likes of Mazzy Star's Hope Sandoval and Portishead's Beth Gibbons. "I do think the sweet spot for Lisa's voice is a melancholy lyric, and I do seem to primarily write relationship songs.", Tompkins explains.

The couple's creative process has remained relatively unchanged, as Lisa explains."Terry will demo his songs himself, on acoustic guitar and piano. He naturally has great phrasing, and I will take from that and add whatever I can do." Tompkins adds that "I'll have the demos on in the background around the house. If Lisa reacts to one, we'll work on it, If she doesn't react, then that song isn't going to work.

Legends of Rock: Roger Hodgson

About: Roger Hodgson

Roger Hodgson has been recognized as one of the most gifted songwriters and lyricists of our time. As the legendary composer of many of the band’s greatest hits, he gave us “Give a Little Bit,” “The Logical Song,” “Dreamer,” “Take the Long Way Home,” “Breakfast in America,” “It’s Raining Again,” “School,” “Fool’s Overture” and so many others that have become the soundtrack of our lives.

Roger's trademark way of setting beautiful introspective lyrics to upbeat melodies resonated and found its way into the hearts and minds of people from cultures around the world.  His songs have remarkably stood the test of time and earned Roger and Supertramp an adoring worldwide following.

During the time that Roger led the band, Supertramp became a worldwide rock phenomenon, selling well over 60 million albums to date. In Canada alone, sales for “Crime of the Century” and “Breakfast in America” reached Diamond status; meaning one in fifteen Canadians owned both albums. The wildly successful album “Breakfast in America" hit number one in countries around the world and stayed on the top of the charts for a full year, selling over 20 million copies and becoming one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

Born in Portsmouth, England, Roger spent much of his childhood at boarding school where his guitar became his best friend.  Learning three chords from his teacher, he began writing songs at the age of twelve, eventually adding piano, bass, drums and even cello to his musical accomplishments. It wasn’t long after his final school year that he recorded his first studio single “Mr. Boyd” with a session band including pianist Reg Dwight, later to become known as Elton John.

Shortly after, Roger met Rick Davies and the nucleus of Supertramp was born. Their initial collaborations attracted the attention of A&M Records and their first album “Supertramp” was released in 1970.  From their second album "Indelibly Stamped" forward, Roger and Rick began writing separately. However, like Lennon/McCartney, they maintained a joint writers credit throughout their Supertramp career.

In 1974, the band released the album “Crime of the Century” with Roger’s song “Dreamer” becoming their first hit and driving the album to the top of the charts.

For the next nine years, dubbed by fans as the “Golden Years,” Supertramp saw four studio albums, numerous tours, and the worldwide success of “Breakfast in America.” Three of Roger's songs from the album became worldwide hits -  “The Logical Song,” “Take the Long Way Home” and “Breakfast in America.” Many awards followed, among them the Ivor Novello Award in 1980 from The British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for “The Logical Song” being named the best song both musically and lyrically.  To this day, “The Logical Song” also has the distinction of being one of the most quoted lyrics in schools.

Roger parted company with Supertramp in 1983 after the “Famous Last Words” album and mega rock stadium tour. Following his heart, he chose to live a simple lifestyle in nature with his family and pursue his spiritual values. He built a state-of-the-art recording studio at home where he could continue to create music and be with his children as they grew up.  His first solo album “In the Eye of the Storm” was released in 1984 and became an international hit, selling over two million copies.

In 1987, the same week that Roger’s second album “Hai, Hai” was released, Roger took a bad fall and shattered both of his wrists.  Doctors told him he would never play music again. Yet with faith and a long period of self-healing and physical therapy, Roger proved them wrong. Within a year and a half he was playing again.

In 2000, he released his next studio album “Open the Door” and in 2001, after taking many years off from touring to raise his children, Roger joined Ringo Starr in his All Starr Tour. It is only since 2004, with his children fully grown, that Roger has felt the call to tour regularly again. The legend is back and his signature voice is stronger than ever.

Roger continues to compose music and write lyrics and has over 60 unreleased songs, some of which he plans to record when the time is right.  He compares his writing process to an artist painting a picture, keeping it close to his heart until the picture is complete before he shares it with the world.

Thirty-five years after writing “Give a Little Bit,” Roger received an award for the song being one of the most performed songs in the 2005 ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) repertory.  In 2007, he received this award again for a remake of “Breakfast in America.” Roger has donated his time and signature song “Give a Little Bit” to help raise funds for Tsunami Relief, Red Cross, UNICEF, World Vision, Hurricane Katrina efforts and other worthy causes.

In 2006, Roger released his first ever DVD from one of his live solo concerts in Canada.  “Take the Long Way Home – Live in Montreal” went Platinum in just seven weeks and hit #1 in all of Canada and is now multi-Platinum and Gold in France and Germany. Featuring hits “Dreamer,” “Give a Little Bit,” “School,” “Breakfast in America,” “It’s Raining Again” (to name a few), and a bonus orchestral version of “Fool’s Overture,” this DVD is a stunning reminder of the musical genius of Roger Hodgson.

In 2007, Roger accepted an invitation by Princes William and Harry to perform at the Concert for Diana at Wembley Stadium.  "Give a Little Bit," along with “Dreamer,” “Breakfast in America,” and “It’s Raining Again,” were among Princess Diana’s favorite songs.   Roger’s performance proved to be one of the highlights of the evening when the Princes and entire audience of 65,000 stood up and sang along to honor Princess Diana.

Currently, Roger is performing both public and private concerts in a variety of formats - solo, with backing band, and with symphony orchestra. His most recent release, "Classics Live," is a spectacular collection of his live performances recorded on his 2010 world tour. The first ten tracks, including his most loved classic hits, are now available as an advance release in physical and download formats.

Brett Shady

About: Brett Shady

Of the songs on his debut full-length album “The Devil to Pay”, Brett Shady says, "These are songs that were written out of frustration more than anything else." Having performed as a frontman for rock and punk bands for fifteen years, Brett began writing songs four years ago after a cross-country tour with the band Golden Shoulders. "I needed more artistic control and the opportunity to express myself that I wasn't getting performing other people's music."

With such disparate influences as Elliott Smith, Marty Robbins, Paul Simon, and Sam Cooke, Brett's songs paint a picture of heartbreak and regret and raise questions of good and evil deeply rooted in the American song writing tradition. Most of the ten songs on The Devil to Pay were written about his move from Northern California's gold country to LA ten years ago, a period Brett says was "full of isolation and depression and struggling to find my place in the world." Recorded in Nevada City, California by renowned engineer/producer Dana Gumbiner, the album features an ensemble of veteran musicians and is available at most online stores.

Brett released his follow up album, “National Hotel” Novemeber 11th, 2014 which continues his unique blend of Folk, Pop, and Americana Alternative Rock that solidifies his style, his song character, and his appeal to a growing audience of music starved fans. “Brett Shady” is the real deal.

Matt Hutchison

About: Matt Hutchison

From the very beginning, Matt has been inspired by a good song and story.  When he was six years old, he fell for The Beatles so hard that he thought he was in fact Paul McCartney, even going so far as to put that name at the top of his school work.  He later spent three of his formative years living in England soaking up the sounds of the early British Invasion and digging into the catalog of early Rock & Roll and Country Western music.

Matt's grandfather, "Pappy", built a cabin on Cove Mountain in the George Washington National Forest of West Virginia.  Originally intended as a hunting getaway, Matt now considers this place his songwriting home.  The only thing he hunts for these days is a good melody and a whiskey buzz.  With no running water or electricity, he goes back in time with old-time country radio and setting a rhythm to the rising and setting of the sun.

His latest project “Three Minute Man,” is a reflection of a simpler songwriting approach in a collection of new songs that clock in around 3 minutes each.  Breathing life into these songs is a band of old friends and fine musicians from Baltimore and surrounding locales.

Keep your ears to the ground for “Three Minute Man,” due out November 2014.

Shelters

About: Shelters

Shelters is one part Marshall Usinger, one part Shelly Rollison, and a lot of friends along the way.  The duo met almost five years ago at a house party, but it's only been in the past few years they've started writing together.

Although they exchanged many potential song ideas and developed a few of them, it wasn't until the end of 2013 that a handful of the songs started to find their way.  The result was their debut EP, “All These Heavy Things”, released on iTunes June 17th.

The debut EP of Shelters combines Marshall's rock/punk roots with Shelly's folk/acoustic stylings.  The band hopes to keep developing their sound and are already writing songs for their next album.  If good things come to those who wait, then this is just the start of many good things.

State Lights

About: State Lights

State Lights are a four-piece rock band from Dublin, Ireland who released their debut EP "The Breakout EP" on September 22nd, 2014 and then Re-Released it on March 24th, 2016 as "The Disguise".

"The Disguise" is a debut full of courage and ambition.

Telling tales of young love, frontman, Shobsy wears his heart on his sleeve throughout, portraying incredible amounts of emotion whilst also displaying his great vocal range. The foundation he sits upon is brilliant from start to finish, with guitarist Joe Regan providing a melodic and atmospheric sonic journey through the use of delays and reverbs. The rhythm section also shines, with Noel Perry carrying the weight of each song with his solid bass playing, as well as Paul Ridgeway giving the songs huge energy through his clinical, hard hitting drum parts.

"Love Is In Your Eyes" and "Let You Go" both present the bands extreme Pop sensibilities and respectfully lyrically describe those moments of excitement when one is falling in love and those moments when you must accept that a relationship has run its course. "Breakout" is this young band announcing their arrival to the world stage, with an impressive Stadium Rock song reminiscent of U2's finer musical moments.

Shobsy - Vocals
Joe Regan - Guitar
Noel Perry - Bass
Paul Ridgeway - Drums

The Turning

About: The Turning

Formed in early 2013, it hasn’t taken long for The Turning to gain a hard working reputation, which is expressed through their constant writing, gigging and promotion of their music. The difference is polaric from many other young bands that have the passion, but lack the mature execution.

Having recently wrapped up an extensive 12-date UK tour, the last 18 months has consisted of multiple sell out headline shows, including Camden Barfly and The Leadmill in Sheffield, supporting artist such as The Strypes and Steve Cradock as well as releasing a 9-track mini album.

The Turning have been developing their very own style; incorporating separate influences, crowd reaction from gigs gone by and a clear vision of where they want to go. This has seen their music mutate, morphing into injections of punk urgency with a refreshing modern flair.

Band Members:

Luke McLaughlin (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar/Harmonica)
David Bardon (Lead Guitar)
Louis Gilbert (Bass)
Ruben Kenton-Harris (Drums)

Maginot

About: Maginot

Maginot is a three piece rock band from Astoria, NY that focuses on well-crafted, energetic songwriting. Big Changes, the band's debut release, is a 4-song mission statement for world domination that calls to mind such influences as Guided by Voices, Maritime, and The Strokes with its power pop flair and infectious melodies. Rich Seibert (vocals/guitar) recently switched to spray deodorant, much to the chagrin of his youth. Laney Coletti (bass/vocals) only likes women that look like her, and rightly so. Dan Hillier (drums) is a struggling author of band biographies. With the release of Big Changes this August, the band look to take their sound to the live circuit around New York and beyond, and look to continue releasing songs in order to satisfy the growing demands of an insatiable public.

“Synapse” is the second EP released on March 18th, 2014 by “Maginot”. Have a listen and enjoy.

The collection included hit tracks such as “Leave the Light On”, “Dear Diary”, “Never Leave Me Alone”, and the dark, yet dreamy remake of Harvey Danger’s “Flagpole Sitta”.
