Sena Ehrhardt has emerged as one of the freshest and most
dynamic emerging young voices on the blues scene today. As the buzz about her incendiary
performances at clubs and festivals spreads, heavyweight acts have begun to
take notice. She’s been invited to open concerts for B.B. King, ZZ Top, Robert
Cray, Dickey Betts, Johnny Winter and Gregg Allman. Her latest release, Live My Life, further confirms Sena’s ascendance
to blues elite status.
Sena was born and raised in a house of blues in the
Minneapolis area.As a kid her parents
took her to many all-ages concerts and she was able to see artists like B.B.
King, Koko Taylor and the Fabulous Thunderbirds wow their audiences with
polished and exciting performances. As she grew older young artists like Jonny
Lang and Susan Tedeschi gained success, putting young, contemporary faces to
the music she loved.
A pivotal moment for Sena was attending one of Luther
Allison's final concerts. As she describes it, “As the sun went down and the
lights came up, the emotion of his voice washed over the crowd like a wave,
leaving me with tears in my eyes. His ability to connect through music with
every member of that audience, each with their own stories, struggles and
victories, was stunning to witness. In that moment the idea of being a singer
ceased to be a choice for me and instead became a calling.”
After graduating from college in 2005, Sena began singing
with Plan B, her father’s band, which led to her desire to front her own
group. In 2010 she started the Sena
Ehrhardt Band.
In 2011 Blind Pig released her brilliant debut recording,
Leave The Light On, and the critics and fans alike took immediate notice.Blues Revue said, "From track to track,
Ehrhardt establishes that she is capable of crooning softly or wailing with the
best of them.”Living Blues added,
"Sena Ehrhardt has a bright, soulful sound, and she doesn't hold back -
she can go from sultry and coaxing to gritty and gutsy in an instant.”
Elmore magazine commented, "A wicked sense of soul
power. Ehrhardt creates an atmosphere of lamp-light jazz club, diva-esque
swagger through effortless vocal bends and brassy, wrapped-around-her-finger
inflections that will have the listener hanging on every word."The album won the Blues Blast Music Award
for "Best New Artist Debut Release" and was nominated for a Blues
Music Award in that same category.
For her second recording, All In, released in 2013, Sena
teamed up with one the foremost producers in the worlds of rock and blues
(Santana, Luther Allison, Stevie Ray Vaughan), multi-Grammy Award winner Jim
Gaines. The result of their collaboration is a groove-rich, exciting
exploration of the blues in all its moods.
Calling her “truly one of the most dynamic young voices any
genre has seen in a long time,” Living Blues said, "Her 2011 debut was a
bold statement in cabaret-blues silken gloss. Whereas her debut can be seen as
walking into the club and feeling the crowd, on this effort, Ehrhardt owns the
joint. Sena Ehrhardt's voice cannot get any more powerful, range-defying, and
throwback cool.”Sena was named a 2014
Living Blues Award nominee in the “Blues Artist of the Year (Female)” category.
With her newest release, Live My Life, Sena continues to
forge her own personal and intelligent take on the blues.Says Sena, “Live My Life is such a fitting
title for my new release. The last year
has been one of tremendous growth and inspiration for me both personally and
professionally through music.”For one
thing, she’s excited about an all-new line up of top-flight musicians she
recruited to her Band.After serving
as her band’s lead guitarist and song writing collaborator through her first
two releases, Sena’s father stepped aside earlier this year and she’s put
together a dynamic and energetic new group.
With the new band behind her, Sena’s looking forward to
exciting opportunities on the horizon to play more festivals nationally and
begin touring internationally, as she continues to come into her own as a
vocalist, songwriter and entertainer.
“Working in the studio with producer David Z. at the helm
was a dream come true. His catalogue of work has been, in some ways, a
soundtrack of my life - ranging from Prince to Jonny Lang.I was thrilled that David, who has strong
ties to Minnesota, was able to come to my home state to record my album. In the studio he brought inspired and
emotional performances out of myself, my band and the guest musicians on my
album. It was truly an honor to work
with a creative and contemporary living legend in music.”
“The carefully selected covers are songs that I have held
dear to my heart for years, with my own spin on their classic stories and
appeal. The process of writing for this
album along with my guitarist, Cole Allen, was incredibly rewarding.”
With her commanding stage presence, and gritty, soulfully
emotional vocal prowess, Sena Ehrhardt will continue to rank among the very
best and most versatile of current blues vocalists. The journey’s just beginning for this artist, but with the
release of Live My Life, her expressive song writing, and outstanding
performances, the recognition and accolades for this rising star will continue
to amass
Born and bred in the northwest, Scott Ryan spent his early
years in eastern Washington before moving to Salem, Oregon in 1996. Raised in a
musical family, Scott Ryan learned to sing by performing with his father,
something of a musical celebrity in the northwest, and made music with his
siblings from an early age. After teaching himself to play guitar and knocking
around the Salem music scene for a few years, he moved to southern California
to attend college and began to define himself as a solo artist with a powerful
voice and a story to tell. Once rooted in Los Angeles, Scott was approached to
score the acclaimed short film, “Punky” and soon after, he recorded and
independently circulated his first single, “Buried.” The full-length, indie
debut, “The Coldest Room in the House,” was released in April of 2008, followed
by the ‘Tree Man EP’ in 2009. Over the last several years, Scott Ryan has
journeyed into new territories, sharing the stage with acts like Langhorne
Slim, Josh Ritter and the Helio Sequence while exploring new musical ideas and
directions. These experiences have shaped the upcoming LP, ‘Mercy Killings,’ a
layered, slowly mutating collection of songs full of both unabashedly wild left
turns and quiet, unexpected beauty. Expanding on the themes found on the ‘Tree
Man EP,’ the songs of ‘Mercy Killings’ deal with the differences between
idealism and the life we are given, while attempting to find solace and humor
in the midst of our questioning. Scott Ryan’s lyrical style is sophisticated,
sometimes arcane and often ironic, and his eclectic influences range from
Johnny Cash to the Talking Heads. With ‘Mercy Killings,’ his songs continue to
embody the evolution of inspiration through the universal language of music.

Deering & Down is an independent duo living in Memphis
and playing music worldwide. Originally hailing from the Pacific Northwest, the
band has lived and played music in Alaska, Los Angeles, Ireland, Switzerland,
Canada and Memphis. Called “the best one-two punch in the city” by Memphis'
Commercial Appeal, the duo describes their style as defiantly unorthodox with a
smokey Memphis flavor cast in a glow of shimmering Northern lights.
“We’ve been making music for 11 years now, and we’re confident this is our best
album yet,” said Deering. “Working with Willie was such a great learning
experience, and it really shows in the bold new direction of our third
release.”
The album features a variety of Memphis’ most well-known musicians, including
Al Green’s notable Hi Rhythm section (guitarist Mabon “Teenie” Hodges, bassist
Leroy Hodges, keyboardist Charles Hodges and drummer Howard Grimes), and Rick
Steff, John C Stubblefield and Roy Berry of Lucero.
“…Weaving the two main streams of Memphis music—rockabilly
and Southern soul—the duo has created a hybrid sound that should transform them
from local heroes to roots-rock stars.” ~ Geoffrey Himes, Washington Post
“… She's got a voice like Loretta Lynn swallowed Rod Stewart. He plays guitar
like nobody you've ever heard. Great in a bar. Better in a hotel room. How's
that for a pull quote?” ~ Chris Davis, Memphis Flyer
What are the Twenty First Century Blues? And who shall we
find to sing them?
From trivial first world problems to the seismic shifts in
geopolitics, the modern Blues resonate down the years with the same eternal
themes – loss, loneliness, longing and regret. New wine in vintage casks.
Born on St. Patrick's Day and hailing from County Wicklow,
Hozier was raised on the building blocks of popular music: rhythm and blues,
soul, jazz and the deep dark stuff stretching from Chicago to the Delta. He
joined his first band when he was 15 years old, fronting a soul band with some
older heads. Taught himself to play guitar and piano, and went to Trinity
College to study music. Whilst there, he bagged a seat on the flight deck of
the symphonic B-52 that is the Trinity Orchestra, fronting their missions into
the world of classic rock.
However, four years looked like a long stretch, particularly
when the goal was to write, record and perform his own music; so Hozier dropped
out to concentrate his talents on the creative process full time. He tried out
with a few different producers in various studios, experimented with genres;
but never felt happy with the results. Home is where the art is, and a simple
studio, set up in the attic proved to be the crucible where Hozier would forge
a musical identity he could call his own. A place where Stevie Wonder and
Billie Holiday are revered alongside James Joyce and Oscar Wilde.
He says: “Listen to any song, from any era; and you're looking
through a keyhole into the artist's world as seen through their eyes. Art is,
in it's simplest form, the reproduction of the world around us. All artists
reproduce their vision of the world, and in doing so create a document that
reflects the times they live in”. Which brings us back to the Twenty First
Century Blues, and Hozier's unique, poetic evocations.
Hozier's first release is a 4 track EP. 'Take Me To Church'
(the lead track) and 'Angel Of Small Death' reflect the gospel – soul gumbo at
the heart of his music; 'Like Real People Do' is an Arcadian acoustic adventure
and 'Cherry Wine' a raw emotional discourse, recorded live at 6am on an
abandoned hotel rooftop; with accompaniment from the dawn chorus. Hozier played
all the instruments (Fiachra Kinder helped out on drums), sang all the parts
and recorded at home. Rob Kirwan (Depeche Mode, PJ Harvey) mixed the tracks in
Dublin.
Zemmy puts her
own unique twist on the pop genre, writing songs filled with rich, instantly
memorable melodies and smart lyrics. Influenced by artists such as Sade, Lauryn
Hill, Sia, Dido and Imogen Heap, she creates intelligent pop songs which span
across the wide spectrum of the genre.
From the beginning,
awakening a curiosity without border, the theme of travel is for him a scouring
inspiration source.
His discography comes like
a zoom starting with India in 2007 (“Linga Yoni, The Dub Paradox”), then all
around the world in 2009 (“The Blue Train”), until the moon in 2012 with Joe
Pilgrim (“Mellowmoon”). As this structure ever widening, his music is
characterized by a search space, a mystical experience in the depths of the
underground. Constantly pushing the frontier of kinds, he’s creating a
recognizable sound, adapted to the power of broadband sound like a shockwave.
In this logic of expansion,
contact with public soon became one of the essential point of his creativity.
Contrasting with the intimacy of his solo studio work, his live performances
reveal a breathtaking energy and run without compromise, accompanied by a
massive bass played by Zeuspi. In this respect, we could say that 2009 is
revealed as the year of live concretisation. The release of his album “The Blue
Train” led him to perform on the internationnal stage, USA, Canada, Europe,
amounting him to the rank of unavoidable artists of the French Dub scene.
In 2011, his band TelDem
Com’unity released an album “Ground Zero” very welcomed by critics and concert
halls. Even today, his life is divided between these two projects, sometimes
punctuated by amazing colaborations, espacially with Shanti D (“Politik”) or
the label Jarring Effect (compilation JFX 100).
2012 will be the year of
many surprises because he released with the singer Joe Pilgrim the ambitious
“Mellowmoon”. Dedicated to the moon, this new album turned to the earth on one
side and to the stars on the other promises to be a first step towards a much
greater dimension. A music from elsewhere for a live all in power, that you
will find on stage in March.
Vintage Trouble
is a sensational, soulful four-man band whose very essence screams out loud of
the late 1950's to 1960's. Turned on by and tuned into the evolutionary period
in music and life when there was a razor thin line between Rhythm & Blues
and Rock & Roll, the band reconnects us all to one universal vibration.
Their modern day classics transport the mind, spirit and body back to a sweaty,
swinging, heart-thumping speakeasy. Their live shows feel like a sweet southern
down-home revival mixed with a gritty, downtown edge. Inspirationally, Otis
Redding, Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner can all be felt in woven clothe
that tailor-suit the band like honey to the bee. When the buzz tells you they're
near, get to them...and be prepared to be moved.
My full name is Marie Catherine Rhodes Samé Lottin. I was
born in France (Neuilly sur Seine) where my Dutch mother and Cameroonian father
met. We lived in Cameroon and after my parents split up when I was 7 years old,
I was raised by my mother in The Netherlands. As
a child of 4 I learned to play the flute and piano and started training in
Classical ballet, jazz, tap, flamenco and African dance. My musical taste has
always been very diverse: Classical music, pop, soul and R&B music of the
70's and 80's.
When
I was 6 year old I had a near-death experience. I believe that this moment
caused a shift in my life and in the way I perceive things. Because of my
shyness to speak openly, I started writing songs when I was 15. When I felt the
need to rediscover my African roots and family at the age of 20, an adventurous
journey of three years, I wrote more songs. When I had the opportunity to start
performing professionally as a singer, my stage fear threw me back into my
shell. I was more comfortable dancing on stage.
Reconnection with my lyrics
Recently, fifteen years later , I met an old friend Ties van der Linden, who
has been in the music industry for more than 30 years, composing, producing,
recording, mixing personal projects, television, theater, museums and much
more. (www.fonofactory.com) He encouraged me to
reconnect with my musical inspirations. We started composing, reproducing and
recording the songs together. I
currently also own and run a medical practice and work as a therapist at www.newwaves.nl. As a friend once
said: "Music makes you fly and your work makes you land softly
again." However my music holds high priority and I am blissfully happy
that our intention to release FLOW the end of 2011 has been fulfilled.
The name Rhodês
Rhodês
is my third given name, named after my African grandmother. I recently
discovered that the Greek island Rhodos is named after the 'sea nimph Rhodes'
out of the Greek mythology and after a famous rose on this island. So, after
realizing that my Dutch grandfather was a rose breeder and me having my sea
view practice called `Waves´, the name Rhodes was born as a pseudonym!
The shell
I love the Nautilus shell. For me, the sacred curves of this shell
symbolize personal growth and evolving. On one hand, it describes the return to
your source and intuition as an inward path. On the other hand you can see it
as an outward movement; the expression from your core where you overcome fear
and rise up. This perfectly defines the process of my development in making my
own music. Certainly in life, many people go through this process. It is so
beautiful to find this reflection in the design of a shell.
Quote:
"Writing music has always been a medicine to me, a healing source
in which I could be happy, release my fears, dry my tears, find my trust and
belief in life."

Taylor and vocalist Kelvin Swaby became friends in the 1990s, bonding over a
shared appreciation for vintage R&B and Jim Jarmusch films. Joined by
bassist Spencer Page, drummer Chris Ellul, and keyboardist Hannah Collins, the
two launched their own act — the Heavy — and began combining Taylor's distorted
guitars with lo-fi samples, horns riffs, stomping percussion, and soulful
Prince-styled vocals.
