James Yuill - A Change in State - album Review (2017)

Welcome!

Today’s featured artist on "What’s New in Music" is James Yuill's 5th album, "A Change in State".

James Yuill (born 1981) is an English folktronica musician from London. James has released 5 albums to date: "The Vanilla Disc" in 2005. "Turning Down Water for Air" in 2007, (also re-released by the Moshi Moshi label in 2009), "Movement in a Storm" in 2010, "These Spirits" in 2013 and his latest, "A Change in State" 2017.

James Yuill’s latest album “A Change in State” contains a good mix of alternative rock songs, and soothing dance tunes that are sure to register on your “Hey! I like that song!” meter.

The DJ's Picks:

My personal favourites from the album are “Cashews”, “Fire Breathing” and “Back to the Sun”, however, the album offers such a pleasant listening experience filled with infectious music that caters to a wide range of moods, that my favourites from the album will most likely change from day to day. The album is well named and most definitely worthy of airplay world wide. Don’t miss it!

The first Single from the album, “Back to the Sun” is a well crafted song that carries the soft flowing summer atmosphere right to the soul by its laid back soothing waves. A motion that is sure to move the hips and feet. I love it as I do the dream like acoustic sounds of "Cashews" and the alternative / electric sounds of "Fire Breathing". The album is quite infectious and James Yuill's best album to date in my opinion. ~ Stewart Brennan – World United Music

Refracted Memories

About: Refracted Memories

Refracted Memories is a collaboration between Welsh producer Michael Wadlow, American producer Jack Morefield, and singer songwriter Jay Arana.

Refracted Memory - started when Jack asked Mike for help on a soundscape. The track was to become an album called "The Cares of Tomorrow". During the next few weeks the two quickly formed Refracted Memory and created 10 tracks together for a January 2013 release.

As Jack and Mike were doing their thing, Jay, a friend of Jack was asked to work on a track called “Blood Red Sun”, where Jay added his acoustic playing and lyrics over their soundscape. Everything fit together perfectly and turned out to be a truly special track, as did all others following that. Since then the three have not turned back and have written over 2 albums worth of material. Their debut album together, “Stepping Stones” is out now on Juno and will soon be released internationally on Aug 21st 2015.
-----------------------------

Michael Wadlow - is a producer from Wales who returns to Electronic Music after 20 years of inactivity. This loving father of 3 and devoted grandfather of 3 is back with a bang as an iPad exclusive artist whose soundscape inspired tracks have captured the imagination and he is now one of only a handful of iPad producers to be signed by several recording labels. Michael Wadlow continues to push back the boundaries of electronic music and show the music community just what is possible with the humble iPad!

Jack Morefield - played in a couple of successful cover and original bands simultaneously in Florida, USA in the late 90's. Citing creative differences, and frustrated at the inability to maintain a cohesive line up Jack quit playing live music and moved to Boston in order to start a family and focus on visual art. Fast forward to 2012 after an iPad gift from his wife, Jack was able to begin describing the sonic mindscapes that were impossible for him to define in the past. Jack always kept a hand in music production and multi-tracking but was amazed to discover the potential for composition using loops and grid editing. Never straying far from a guitar, he was now able to create full compositions to play over.

Jay Arana - is primarily a folk/psych folk, Americana acoustic artist, singer/songwriter.  He has played in a number of successful original bands over the years (post grunge era in the mid to late 90s, early 2000s) mostly in the Portland, Oregon area.  He is a self-taught guitarist and plays by ear, utilizing a number of alternate tunings that add to the depth of his sound.  A versatile musician that has influences from a number of genres, he does not stick to one particular style as he feels the complex emotions that come out through music cannot be satisfied by one particular style. Something he continually strives for is to describe life through music, keeping it as visual as possible through the lyrical/music interaction.

Band Members: Michael Wadlow, Jack Morefield, Jay Arana

Renaiszance

About: Renaiszance

“Study the science of art. Study the art of science. Develop your senses, especially learn how to see. Realize that everything connects to everything else.” -Leonardo Da Vinci

Da Vinci eloquently stated what the Renaissance Era stood for, rebirth and cultural innovation between the arts and science. RENAISZANCE, an inspirational and uplifting electronic dance / pop group comprised of brother-sister duo, Ravé Mehta (producer) and Radha Mehta (lead singer) embodies that very spirit in their debut album RISE.

In this twelve song release, Ravé overlays Radha’s angelic wide-ranging vocals and melodies onto a rhythmic canvas of electronic dance and dubsteb.

“I Will Rise” is the first single from the RENAISZANCE debut album RISE and serves as the album’s theme song in honor of Nikola Tesla.

The album RISE is inspired by Ravé Mehta’s graphic novel THE INVENTOR, based on the true story of mystic inventor Nikola Tesla. Recognized as a top seller at its debut in San Diego’s Comic-Con 2012, THE INVENTOR illustrates how Nikola Tesla won the epic AC/DC battle against Thomas Edison during the late 19th century, regarding Tesla as the true Father of Modern Electricity. Although Tesla later died penniless, many of his inventions and ideas continue to live on and are still used in today’s technology, including in the creation of electronic music. In honor of Tesla, Ravé produced RISE as an electronic dance concept album that speaks to THE INVENTOR’s story of LOVE, HOPE and FREEDOM.

In addition to Tesla’s reemergence in the 21st century, “I Will Rise” also plays to the very emotions both Ravé and Radha have felt throughout their lives about never giving up and always believing in oneself, setting a tone of empowerment throughout the album. The songs featured on RISE purely have a life of their own scattered along the three dimensional continuum of love, hope, and freedom. This is where RISE takes the listener on a journey through the duo’s subconscious, skydiving from a childhood surrounded by naysayers only to land firmly on the ground as adults with the determination to charge ahead and eventually fly on their own.

The song “Friend In Me” is an anthem on friendship and unbreakable bonds, while on the other extreme the song “Fake New Real You” is an open letter pushing a loved one away to self-explore. The emotional roller coaster of love rises to its peak in “Can’t Let Go”, dealing in one’s inability to let a loved one go, and falls to its trough in “I Will Always Love You” about a heartfelt way of simply saying ‘we’re just not meant to be together’.

Hope is the theme that resonates most with the duo as evident in most of their songs. Having watched their immigrant parents from India pursue a life-long dream of a better life in the U.S., they explore chasing their own dreams in the songs “American Dream” and “Follow Your Heart”. The tracks “They Can’t Stop Me”, “Did You Ever Think”, and “My Way” spotlight overcoming negativity while pursuing their aspirations. “Touch the Sky” speaks to how unconditional love and freedom combined with responsibility empowers one to continually test and push their own boundaries.

Closing the album is the song “Grace and Glory”. Originally written as a tribute to NASA’s final space shuttle launch, the song celebrates how collectively we can achieve anything we put our hearts and minds to.

Stephen Hummel

About: Stephen Hummel

Stephen Hummel has evolved into an artist that consistently defies expectations. By creating music that ignores genre labels and focuses on emotional weight, Hummel has managed to avoid the pitfalls of trendiness and style-over-substance. Whether producing epic instrumental statements as subtractiveLAD, or (more recently) forging a new path as a singer/songwriter under his own name, Hummel creates music that reaches deep into the listener's psyche. Embraced by independent radio and the blogosphere, Hummel's music has managed to reach a global audience of adventurous listeners, interested in the next chapter that will be added to an already extensive catalogue.

With classical training as both an instrumentalist and vocalist, Hummel began his musical career in the world of improvisational performance, developing a reputation for never performing the same show twice. After a late-90s residency at the now defunct DV8, in downtown Vancouver, Hummel decided to largely abandon live performance while developing his skills as a producer/recording artist. In the early- 2000s, Hummel also began developing software synthesizers for the German audio company, CreamWare, under the mentorship of synth-legend/guru, John Bowen. The subtractiveLAD project was born out of late-night experiments in Hummel's ever growing studio of custom software creations and hardware investments.

After releasing seven diverse and critically acclaimed subtractiveLAD albums for n5MD, Hummel has struck out on his own, pushing the subtractiveLAD sound into new territory, while exploring song-writing and singing, without a moniker. Adding to his creative arsenal, Hummel has reached back to his formal training in the visual arts and introduced photographic, graphic design and video elements to compliment his musical output. By being able to control all aspects of his creative output, Hummel has made his music an increasingly personal and intimate experience for his listeners. With a steady stream of work and an approach that looks to always push his own boundaries, Hummel will continue to keep listeners guessing what direction he will explore next

Screen Vinyl Image

About: Screen Vinyl Image

Screen Vinyl Image is formed by ex-members of DC shoegazer’s Alcian Blue and are a part of the Virginia shoegaze scene (Ceremony, Skywave, Alcian Blue, The Offering). Their music is a combination of Electronic Psychedelic and Shoegaze, with influences that range from early electronic artists like Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter to recent electronic artists like Rude66 and Legowelt, to shoegaze/ psychedelic bands like Curve, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Loop, Suicide, and My Bloody Valentine.

The band tours constantly and has shared the stage with Ulrich Schnauss, Auburn Lull, The December Sound, A Place To Bury Strangers, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Adam Franklin and recently did a tour in Japan with their label mates Ceremony. Their live show is often compared by many to Suicide and My Bloody Valentine both in volume levels and intensity and their DIY visuals combined with 2,100 watts of strobes take their audience into a trip of sensory overdrive.

Screen Vinyl Image have released a 5-song EP (The Midnight Sun), a single (Chaser), a split 12 inch (Ceremony/SVI), their debut full length Interceptors, and are releasing in 2010 a 12 inch of remixes (May 2010), the Siberian Eclipse 7 inch on Fan Death Records (June 2010) and the Too Much Speed 7 Inch (summer 2010) on Custom Made Music.

Their albums present a full gamut of the band’s influences, from atmospheric synths, dancy electronic beats, tripped out drones over hypnotic samples, and of course layers of fuzz and guitar over slamming beats.

Long live the new flesh.

Carrie Armitage

About: Carrie Armitage

“Carrie Armitage is a Canadian singer-songwriter with a proclivity for ecological-consciousness and peace activism. Carrie’s 2010 release, The Spirit of The Times,
is a fairly candid take on the global awareness and preservation for the Earth’s vanishing resources. Carrie’s awareness of Earth’s impending plight is a musical message of electronica with varying shades of jazz, trip-hop, house, and lounge. The ambient beat of electronica and her vocals carry the song’s highs and lows from the darkest depths of Earth’s inner core through the vast darkness of intergalactic space." - Matthew Forss - Ariel Publicity
The 4th solo album released by Carrie Armitage “Frequency” in March 2014 is an eclectic, artistic mix of earth inspired soulful pop; ambient, eco/peace driven music with a hint of jazz, scat and spoken word.

“Frequency” is a painting made with sound by a colourful artistic mesh of New Age rock, electronica, and inspiring vocal flairs with soulful Jazzy expressions.” ~ Stewart Brennan – World United Music

Vespero

About: Vespero

Formed in Astrakhan, Russian Federation band VESPERO (ex-Веспер) began in early 2003 as all instrumental quartet of bassist/keyboardist Arkady Fedotov, violinist Valentin Rulev, percussionist/drummer Ivan Fedotov, and guitarist Alexander Kuzovlev who were brought together by common interest in spontaneous improvisations and psychedelic-fueled music.
In the next few months, the line-up grew to include a female vocalist, with the final addition of Natalya Tjurina, and Arkady Fedotov taking male vocalist duties. In 2004-2006, VESPERO endured several personnel changes, produced a number of self-made recordings featuring Alexei Klabukov on keyboards… and gradually shifted away from the acid-jamming and kraut-rock style to embrace a more prog-rock oriented approach to music drawing inspiration from the avant-garde poetry and theatre-art.

The band's current lineup features: Ivan Fedotov (drums, percussions), Arkady Fedotov (bass, synths, flutes, voice), Alexander Kuzovlev (guitars, electronics), and Alexei Klabukov (synths, keyboards, accordion)

"One listen to this musical outfit from Southern Russia known as Vespero was all it took to make me begin thinking about the great things that must be happening in Russia…" (by Ryan Sparks, Sea Of Tranquility).

"With each new release the Russian band Vespero further reinforce my feeling that they are one of the best instrumental bands on the contemporary Space Rock/Psychedelic scene…" (by Jerry Kranitz, Aural Innovations).

Celestial Bums

About: Celestial Bums

Rock could hardly be just music. It is a range of creative disciplines and outlets. It's music, of course but it's also interpreting, role playing, and thus theater and poetry too. Rock is the perfect medium to intertwine the two true sources of art: The dionisian and the apollinean. What is inebriating, and what is dream-like. When rock is played and interpreted, when musicians don't play or sing, but recite, rock is more than music, it is the ultimate form of art.

Rock is our legacy as Europeans, our outlet to give an escape valve to the most primary of our creative urges. Rock twists you with pain and passions. A relatively new ritual, but that reflects the basic elements of the Greek tragedy.

And it is art that is the ultimate objective of our existence, here and now, the noblest way to express what's on our souls. Sacred ritual and self-realization.

Wheat Fields

About: Wheat Fields

Wheat Fields is a Psychedelic group based in the Blue Mountains Australia. They have released two mesmerizing EP’s on Bandcamp to date and are certainly destined for greater things.

Saturnalia: Released 07 May 2013

Saturnalia was the name of a pagan celebration held in December in ancient Rome, honouring the god Saturn. Likewise, this EP was conceived during a December camping trip on the north coast of NSW; a group of under-20 year old friends with tents at the beach consuming fruit and psychedelics amongst goannas and dingoes.

The second phase of ‘Saturnalia’ began in January 2013. A studio, ‘Shabby Road’, was created in core member Josch Dinjar’s living room, and quickly recording began, punctuated by nude swims and coffee. In DIY spirit, it incorporated MP3 players, strange stereo systems found in sheds, old tape decks, mysteriously customised effect pedals, and mixing techniques that the band virtually ‘made up’. It all makes for one layered, luscious, nostalgic listen.

Composers - Mitch Hunter (Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Synths), Zak Baillie (Guitars, Bass), and Josch Dinjar (Guitars, Drums, Bass, Production).
Live Members - Maddie Harriott (Vocals, Percussion), Glenn Hopper (Organ, Piano, Synth), additional drumming by Harley Dorrell.
Cover Art and Design by Tom Groves

First EP: Heaven Is A Place Where Nothing Ever Happens – Released June 6th, 2012

Seventh Epic

About: Seventh Epic

Seventh Epic is a rock/electronic band based in Charlotte, NC. The band is made up of Josh Queen on electric guitar, Shawna Ohm on keys and synths, Garrett Ohm on drums, and Sarah Queen on bass and lead vocals. The band performs regularly in the Charlotte area and surrounding region and has just released their second full-length album, "The Robots Are Dreaming Again.” Seventh Epic offers an energetic live show with charm and creativity. Their heavy use of synths and unconventional song structure pulls them into progressive rock, but the catchy songs wouldn’t let you know it. They take the crowds for a ride through heart pounding hard rock and wide open electronic spaces, then down for a smooth landing in an orchestrated saga.

Aviators

About: Aviators

Who am I?

Well, I’m an independent electronic musician. I pretty much make everything from dubstep to alternative, metal to orchestral. I specialize in vocal songs, which usually take elements from alternative rock and modern electronica. I prefer to cover and combine a wide range of genres instead of fitting into just one. Why settle for one when you can have them all?

I began my musical journey at the age of 4, when I began playing the violin. I played it for 8 years before quitting and moving on to other things. I figured that playing the violin would never get me anywhere in life, but I now realize that it had grown my skills in music theory, as well as teaching me to read music.

I picked up the guitar shortly after quitting violin, and instead of taking lessons I taught myself. Instead of going the typical route of learning chords and such, I just played around with solos and learned to play songs by ear.

In early 2011, I took my first step in music production; I began using a DAW. Garageband was my first one, and it taught me all the basics. I played around with everything I could and pumped out a couple absolutely horrible songs. After months of fiddling with Garageband, I chose to move to a more pro-level DAW. Fruity Loops was my first choice, and I quickly learned that I wasn’t ready for such a big switch. Having no idea what I was doing was a good thing, though… It allowed me to learn quickly by trial and error. I played around with it for a couple months, and I ended up working on what became my debut album, Reflections of a Dream.

And then… Ponies.

If you’ve never heard of bronies, let me explain them to you. They’re teenage/adult men and women who watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Simple as that. It may sound odd, but the fantastic production and clever writing of the show caught my eye from the start. In October of 2011, I became a brony. I was a bit ashamed of it at first, but I quickly grew out of that.

Right before the release of Reflections of a Dream in December, I asked The Living Tombstone if he would remix one of the tracks. To my surprise, he agreed. I had been listening to his music since I became a brony, so it was an honor for me to have him remix one of my tracks. After he finished the remix, it began a flood of his fans to my YouTube channel. This was the beginning of my “fan base”, and the fact that it was 99% bronies encouraged me to start making brony music myself.

And I did.

I made brony song after brony song. To this date I make several brony songs a month, along with an occasional non-pony song. I continue to work towards a professional career as a musician, with the hopes of one day being able to make a living making music like I do now.

I’m currently working on my third full-length album titled “From All Sides”, and later plan to continue making brony-themed works under the name “The Sharded”, a duo project with fellow brony artist Bronyfied.
