The Ghost Ease

About: The Ghost Ease

The Ghost Ease are a Portland-based indie rock trio with a dreamy, slightly aggressive sound influenced by '90s alternative rock/grunge as well as the riot grrrl movement. Their songs are often tense yet calmly paced, but they also ramp up into a spirited punk fury, and are always propelled by the unique vocals of lead singer/guitarist/songwriter Jem Marie.

The group started as a home-recording solo project of Marie in 2010, and became a duo in 2012 when Nsayi Matingou joined on drums. The Ghost Ease recorded their self-titled debut album during winter of 2012 through spring of 2013, engineered and mixed by Joey Binhammer, who also contributed bass to some of the album's songs. Following the album's release on Talking Helps Records, Fabi Reyna became the group's bassist. Lawrence Vidal replaced Reyna in 2014. The trio's 7" EP Quit Yer Job, which featured a brooding cover of M.I.A.'s "Bad Girls," was released by Cabin Games in April of 2015. The Ghost Ease recorded “Raw”, their second album, in Seattle with producer Steve Fisk, and it was co-released by Cabin Games and K Records in September of 2015. ~ Paul Simpson

The Ghost Ease revel within the warm folds of a sort of soft savagery, pin-pricking holes into the fabric of the astral veil, and creating hypnotic, raw opuses by way of heavy guitars, frenzied drums and lilting vocal timbres.

Legends of Rock: The Fixx

About: The Fixx

The Fixx are an English rock and new wave band formed in London in 1979. The band's hits include "One Thing Leads to Another", "Saved by Zero", "Are We Ourselves?", and "Secret Separation", all of which made the U.S. Top 20, as well as early MTV Video hits "Red Skies" and "Stand Or Fall" and Mainstream Rock chart hits "Driven Out" and "Deeper and Deeper," the latter of which was featured on the soundtrack of the 1984 film Streets of Fire.

Early Years as The Portraits & The Fix (1979 – 1981)

College friends Cy Curnin on vocals and Adam Woods on drums formed the group in London in 1979, initially calling themselves Portraits. The pair placed an ad for additional members, and recruited keyboardist Rupert Greenall, guitarist Tony McGrail and bassist Russell Mckenzie later to be replaced by Charlie Barrett. Portraits issued two singles for Ariola Records: "Little Women" (1979), and "Hazards In The Home" (1980).

Later in 1980, McGrail left. At this point, the band added guitarist Jamie West-Oram (formerly of Phillip Rambow's band) and changed their name to The Fix. This version of the band recorded for 101 Records, releasing their first single ("Lost Planes") in February 1981. This track, along with several live tracks issued by 101 on various compilations, received some radio exposure on the BBC. In these early days West-Oram was billed simply as "Jamie West", and keyboardist Greenall occasionally used his full name Rupert Peter Greenall.

The Fix's raised profile eventually led to the group being offered a contract by MCA Records.[1] Worried about the potential drug-user implication of the band's name, MCA insisted on a name change before signing them to the label. A compromise was reached as the band altered the spelling of their name to The Fixx, and a deal was duly inked.

The RCA & MCA Years (1982 – 1991)

Barrett left The Fixx just after the recording of their first album, Shuttered Room, in 1982. This album featured the band's initial hits, "Stand or Fall" and "Red Skies," both of which charted in the US and the UK. The band found particular success in Canada, where "Stand or Fall" reached the top 40. "Stand or Fall" entered the charts in the U.S on October 30, 1982.

Barrett was replaced on bass by Alfie Agius for the Shuttered Room tour. Agius' stay in the band was short-lived, though, as he left during the 1983 recording of their next album Reach the Beach, after having recorded four tracks. Agius is credited as co-writer on all the album's tracks, but the group for this album was officially credited as a quartet (Curnin, Greenall, West-Oram and Woods). Agius went on to briefly tour with the hard rock/heavy metal band, Fastway that same year.

Reach the Beach became (and remains) the group's most commercially successful album. Agius' bass work is featured on the album's first two singles "Saved by Zero" and "One Thing Leads to Another."[2] Both these singles cracked the US top 40, and "One Thing Leads To Another" became the band's biggest-ever hit (No. 1 Canada, No. 4 US). It was during these sessions that bassist Dan K. Brown joined the band. Brown played bass on the third top 40 single from the album, "The Sign Of Fire" and continued with the band on its subsequent tour. Brown became a full member of the band thereafter.

The 1984 album Phantoms contained the hits "Are We Ourselves?" and "Sunshine In The Shade." Another song from the period, "Deeper And Deeper," was released as the B-side of "Are We Ourselves?" (and also appeared in an edited version on the soundtrack for the film Streets of Fire). This track received substantial airplay on U.S. and Canadian modern rock radio stations.

In 1985 The Fixx recorded the song "A Letter to Both Sides" for the soundtrack of the film Fletch. In 1986 they released their fourth album Walkabout, containing "Secret Separation" (No. 1 on Billboard Magazine's "Album Rock" chart) and "Built for the Future." The 1987 album React, containing both live and new studio material, was the last for MCA Records.

1988 saw their return with a new album Calm Animals and a new label RCA Records. This album contained another U.S. hit "Driven Out" (another No. 1 on Billboard's "Album Rock" chart).

The band returned to MCA for their next album, 1991's Ink. The album featured "How Much Is Enough?" (No. 27 Canada, No. 35 US).

Post Major Label Years – (1992 to Present)

Dan K. Brown left the band in 1994. He was not officially replaced, and the band used session musicians on bass in his stead, with Chris Tait playing bass on most recordings and live shows from 1995 through the early 2000s. The four man line-up (with contributions from Tait and other sessioneers) recorded 1998's Elemental and the 1999 album 1011 Woodland on which they re-recorded a selection of previous hits and album tracks.

In 2002, The Fixx performed Nancy Sinatra's 1960s classic "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" for an album of cover versions of songs from the 1960s to 1990s called When Pigs Fly.

In 2003, the band released their ninth studio album, Want That Life. Gary Tibbs, formerly a member of Roxy Music, The Vibrators and Adam and the Ants was installed as an official member on bass for this album.

Long-time bassist Dan K. Brown re-joined the band in 2008, replacing Tibbs. They celebrated 25 years of making music together, with the release of the 2-CD Twentyfifth Anniversary Anthology compilation.

With the classic lineup back intact, The Fixx released their 10th studio album Beautiful Friction on July 17, 2012. The Fixx regularly tour the US.

Screen Vinyl Image

About: Screen Vinyl Image

Screen Vinyl Image is formed by ex-members of DC shoegazer’s Alcian Blue and are a part of the Virginia shoegaze scene (Ceremony, Skywave, Alcian Blue, The Offering). Their music is a combination of Electronic Psychedelic and Shoegaze, with influences that range from early electronic artists like Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter to recent electronic artists like Rude66 and Legowelt, to shoegaze/ psychedelic bands like Curve, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Loop, Suicide, and My Bloody Valentine.

The band tours constantly and has shared the stage with Ulrich Schnauss, Auburn Lull, The December Sound, A Place To Bury Strangers, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Adam Franklin and recently did a tour in Japan with their label mates Ceremony. Their live show is often compared by many to Suicide and My Bloody Valentine both in volume levels and intensity and their DIY visuals combined with 2,100 watts of strobes take their audience into a trip of sensory overdrive.

Screen Vinyl Image have released a 5-song EP (The Midnight Sun), a single (Chaser), a split 12 inch (Ceremony/SVI), their debut full length Interceptors, and are releasing in 2010 a 12 inch of remixes (May 2010), the Siberian Eclipse 7 inch on Fan Death Records (June 2010) and the Too Much Speed 7 Inch (summer 2010) on Custom Made Music.

Their albums present a full gamut of the band’s influences, from atmospheric synths, dancy electronic beats, tripped out drones over hypnotic samples, and of course layers of fuzz and guitar over slamming beats.

Long live the new flesh.

Metropolis

About: Metropolis

METЯOPOLIS, a rising steampunk inspired Alternative Rock band from Bury St Edmunds are currently making waves at rock venues across the country with their dynamic and original sound. Seamlessly blending Sci-fi Nu-Wave and Prog Rock, they have really lit up the growing Steampunk rock scene.

" We are trying to focus the largely eclectic steampunk genre into a defined style that is both true to the sub-genre, whilst still accessible to the public at large"

Managing to gain fans spanning the world in a very short time, this tight 5 piece band of seasoned musicians write original retro-futurist music with a dystopian slant, that really captures the imagination, whilst also managing to knock out slick guitar, pounding drums and catchy synth licks.

With plaudits coming in from genre leaders Vernian Process, Abney Park and BB Blackdog, Metropolis could well become the vehicle Steampunk needs to go mainstream.

Healthy Junkies

About: Healthy Junkies

Parisian Lead singer Nina Courson met British guitarist Phil Honey-Jones in 2009 in the now defunct venue Punk in Soho, both of them were in separate bands at the time. It wasn't long before ideas were bouncing around and they began to write songs together, the shared influences of the likes of Iggy Pop, Nirvana, Blondie, Killing Joke,Sonic Youth, Bauhaus and Bowie playing a big part in the direction of the music. Inspiration has come from far and wide and lyrically the lines between autobiographical and fiction are blurred and merged. I suppose if there was a specific aim it would be to capture and bottle the essence of certain music from the past and release it kicking and screaming into the now.

They have played now with many different drummers and bass players along the way, the line-up seems to be in a constant state of flux but the spirit remains the same.. They played their first gig together at an all day punk festival in Brighton in September 2010 where the promoter ran off with the money and Healthy Junkies only got to play about 15 mins before the festival shut down.. Since then the band have played many gigs all over the U.K. including a slot at the mighty Rebellion punk festival in August 2012 and 2013 and will be back there on Friday 8th August 2014. The band continue to play at their self-hosted monthly night at The Unicorn, Camden London as well as travelling all round the UK whenever possible. A 2 week tour of Britanny, France is scheduled for November, so its busy busy busy on the road.

On stage lead singer Nina Courson interacts with the other band members and entices her audience in the theatre that has become the trademark of their live shows. Its all in the songs really, make what you will of any messages you may find either hidden or glaringly obvious, Healthy Junkies are here to entertain, they play what they feel like playing and don't feel the need to compromise or fit in, The world right now is not necessarily a better place but this is where we find ourselves and so stay Healthy if you can and if you're going to get addicted to something, make it music that means something, not prossac/mind numbing pharmaceutical corporate rip off pills intended to kill individuality off and turn us into lobotomized robot slaves.

They self released their debut album entitled Sick Note in 2011. The follow up 'The Lost Refuge' is now available on STP Records and an E.P. entitled 'Hair of the dog' is now available only at gigs or from the band themselves online. The third album is currently being mixed and due for release later this year on STP Records. The current line-up for the band now includes Dave Renegade on bass guitar and Tony Alda on drums playing alongside Nina and Phil.
