Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys

About: Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys

There are few things as inspiring as pure, unfettered talent in a hard-working, humble artist. Lucy Kruger is one of the few artists on the SA music scene that possesses all of these attributes and it shows in her work.

Originally from Grahamstown, Lucy (now 23) recently arrived in Cape Town after completing her undergraduate degree in Music and her Honours in Drama at Rhodes University, and is set to take the notoriously hardnosed Mother City music scene by storm with her fresh take on indie/alternative rock. Her singular sound is reminiscent of the fearless, female vocals of powerful acts like
Sinéad O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries fame and also draws influence from the work of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos – culminating in a rich tapestry of skilful, versatile vocals bolstered by soulful melodies.

Lucy has been writing and performing her own material for six plus years and has in the past had the pleasure to open for international act Linton Kwezi Johnson (LKJ), as well as respected local acts such as Josie Field, Wendy Oldfield, Cutting Jade and Shawn Phillips. Since arriving in Cape Town Lucy has treated audiences to foot-tapping performances at the likes of Daddy Longlegs, Alma Café, the Jolly Roger Pastis, Mojos, &Union, Obviouzly Armchair, Cape Quarter Market, Hout Bay Harbour Market, 5 Reyneveld, Aan De Braak and the Barleycorn.

Her debut album ‘Cut those Strings’(produced by Schalk Joubert and engineered by Dave Langemann) , features a host of innovative artists including Inge Beckmann, Schalk Joubert, Kevin Gibson, Melissa Van Der Spuy and Albert Frost, yet remains true to the folk sound her growing fan-base has come to know and love.

Says Lucy of how she came to make music: “I started playing guitar because I wanted to write music. One of the first songs I learnt on the guitar was Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’. After hearing that song and feeling what it was to play it, I was completely hooked. After setting my heart on music I was constantly reminded (and still am) about how difficult the music industry is. Difficult perhaps, but hopefully not impossible. I want and love it enough to give it (and myself) a fighting chance. I am slowly starting to discover the rules of an industry that ‘has no rules’. It is certainly keeping me on my toes and that is an exciting place to be.”

It is this strong work ethic and drive to succeed that underscores all of Lucy’s endeavours and it set to launch her inimitable sound on the SA music scene.

Kungens Man

About: Kungens Man

Translated, Kungens Man means “King’s Man”.

Kungens Man are a Progressive, Psychedelic, Trans-rock band from Stockholm Sweden. The number of members vary, but the core of the band is four men in their forties who already paid their debts to society.

Kungens Män is a cosmic music organism transmitting from Stockholm, Tellus.
Wooden soundscapes found in comet dust. Warped human brain waves due to heavy use of electricity. Always battling for peace, deconstruction and paradox.

The current form first appeared on Earth in 2012.

Kungens Män creates psychedelic improvisation within the elements of progressive rock / shoegaze, and free jazz. Some of their inspiration comes from tradition Swedish improv rock such as Träd, Gräs och Stenar, International Harvester, Pärson Sound etc.

Kungens Män is a vehicle for transportation. It is the elevator, the wave, the train of association. The hang out in the pool of noise.

It is the expression of un-responsibility. Kungens Män will always do the wrong thing, play the wrong note, wrong the wrong, wrong. Have no fear, Kungens Man is here!

Aviators

About: Aviators

Who am I?

Well, I’m an independent electronic musician. I pretty much make everything from dubstep to alternative, metal to orchestral. I specialize in vocal songs, which usually take elements from alternative rock and modern electronica. I prefer to cover and combine a wide range of genres instead of fitting into just one. Why settle for one when you can have them all?

I began my musical journey at the age of 4, when I began playing the violin. I played it for 8 years before quitting and moving on to other things. I figured that playing the violin would never get me anywhere in life, but I now realize that it had grown my skills in music theory, as well as teaching me to read music.

I picked up the guitar shortly after quitting violin, and instead of taking lessons I taught myself. Instead of going the typical route of learning chords and such, I just played around with solos and learned to play songs by ear.

In early 2011, I took my first step in music production; I began using a DAW. Garageband was my first one, and it taught me all the basics. I played around with everything I could and pumped out a couple absolutely horrible songs. After months of fiddling with Garageband, I chose to move to a more pro-level DAW. Fruity Loops was my first choice, and I quickly learned that I wasn’t ready for such a big switch. Having no idea what I was doing was a good thing, though… It allowed me to learn quickly by trial and error. I played around with it for a couple months, and I ended up working on what became my debut album, Reflections of a Dream.

And then… Ponies.

If you’ve never heard of bronies, let me explain them to you. They’re teenage/adult men and women who watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Simple as that. It may sound odd, but the fantastic production and clever writing of the show caught my eye from the start. In October of 2011, I became a brony. I was a bit ashamed of it at first, but I quickly grew out of that.

Right before the release of Reflections of a Dream in December, I asked The Living Tombstone if he would remix one of the tracks. To my surprise, he agreed. I had been listening to his music since I became a brony, so it was an honor for me to have him remix one of my tracks. After he finished the remix, it began a flood of his fans to my YouTube channel. This was the beginning of my “fan base”, and the fact that it was 99% bronies encouraged me to start making brony music myself.

And I did.

I made brony song after brony song. To this date I make several brony songs a month, along with an occasional non-pony song. I continue to work towards a professional career as a musician, with the hopes of one day being able to make a living making music like I do now.

I’m currently working on my third full-length album titled “From All Sides”, and later plan to continue making brony-themed works under the name “The Sharded”, a duo project with fellow brony artist Bronyfied.

Scarlet Hollow

About: Scarlet Hollow

The Scarlet Hollow Sound is...

Powerful, light, dark, ethereal, heavy, melodic music with an emphasis on the rock in
progressive rock. They perform and produce high quality music with thought provoking lyrics and sonic sophistication. Scarlet Hollows music is made with a high level of musicianship, yet nothing seems sterile and polished so much that all the raw energy and emotion is squeezed out of it. They blend diverse influences to make music that is not geared towards pop music trends and fashion statements. Scarlet Hollow's music combines hauntingly beautiful and textural sections of music, with very heavy, dark, and powerful sections, often shifting undetectably between odd time signatures yet never losing site of the songs intent and message.

Traveling effortlessly between progressive rock and metal, Scarlet Hollow will take you on an emotional ride with dark heavy guitar riffs, soaring leads, beautiful atmospheres, adventurous arrangements, haunting vocal melodies, and a powerhouse rhythm section.

ONE (The Band)

About: ONE

After the success of their Sophomore release "Dirty Valentine". The ONE boys felt incredibly inspired to begin working on a new album. Having spent the better part of the last 3 years touring, there was a lot of excitement about getting back into writing mode. "You spend all that time out on the road,
you see so much, experience so much and have so much to say. You just gotta sit down and begin to
put it all down on paper", says Danny Rossi.

"Being away from home so much makes you feel a certain way that at times is hard to put into words. It is an amazing feeling to have great fans and friends so far away from home," says guitarist Chris Staniforth.

Having had success and a good vibe recording "Dirty Valentine" ONE decided to again acquire the services of Slaves on Dope guitarist Kevin Jardine. "He did a good job on the last record. He provides a good mix of honesty and input that just works well with us," says Staniforth.

The band spent way more time preparing for the studio process than the last record. Building a small pre-production studio in the house on one of the band members, making it way easier to get work done. "We began putting stuff together and getting a feel for where we were going with this record, continues
Staniforth.

"We wrote the least record relatively fast. We wanted to take more time on this one. Trying not to over analyze but at the same time just putting more into it," says Rossi. "You obviously learn with every album you are gonna put out, so it was more about just applying what we have learned."

Three years can seem to be a long stretch between albums. "The demand to tour always seemed to be there. You can get caught up pretty quick and not realize that all this time has gone by," says drummer Rudy Occhionero. "Playing shows and connecting with people is where the magic happens. It is where you
find out who you really are as a band."

Having added bassist Phil Hardy after the recording process had finished for "Dirty Valentine" this was the first writing and studio experience for Hardy, or "The Rookie" as he is also known as. "I was excited and nervous. Playing shows is one thing, but working on an album is another. It is all very exciting
for me," says Hardy.

In the music business today, albums can sound generic and too polished. Something that ONE tries to avoid. "The bands and albums that inspire us to be musicians are the old school Led Zeppelin, Ramones and Motley Crue records. Nowadays everything is sampled and over compressed for radio, the soul of the songs at
times seems to be lacking," says guitarist Staniforth who also co-produced the last album with Jardine.

"I love the old school hair metal. It is what I grew up on and I still listen to today. Fun, shake your ass catchy tunes that stand the test of time. The kind of tunes that can rock the House Live,' says Rossi.

The new album "Worlds Collide" speaks of struggles and success stories of todays reality. A groovy, rock your face off album that has a little something for everyone. "It even has a song that if you turned the heavy guitars back could be considered country," says Rossi.

"With so much going on in the World, you can't help but write about it. It is all about staying positive and staying the course," adds Staniforth.

With a new album comes a new chapter. A chapter that the band will write one show at a time.

“Transcend” is an album that leaves an indelible mark on its listener. There is so much in the album that makes it feel like the soundtrack to your life, whether the songs are somehow able to describe the turning points in your life or connect with emotions that you have experienced, the songs offer encouragement to keep a positive outlook about the future. It is an album that takes many artists a life-time to make, but it is really nice that Dream Aria can make this kind of album now. ~ Susan FrancesAbsolute Punk (08/15/08)

Rumour Den

About: Rumour Den

Ok, do you want the truth…or just the rumours?

Rumour has it this band began in 2000 as a vehicle for the songs written by long-term friends/bandmates Gilmore & Simms. They recorded these songs and released a self-financed single ‘Under A Cloud’ in April 2001 to critical acclaim and creditable sales given its self-financed status. This prompted the decision to keep recording and by the end of 2001 an album was completed – ‘Melancholics Anonymous’

If the band’s name (taken from the Doors’ song ‘Crawling King Snake’) conjures up images of a secret place where dark tales are told in furtive whispers, the album did nothing to dispel this image. Indeed, the album title, ‘Melancholics Anonymous’ makes us think of a place where the lonely and alienated gather to give their testimony and the 10 songs feel more like 10 confessionals. Gilmore’s unashamedly dark lyrics mix fact with fiction, the real with the imagined. The listener is never quite sure where the truth ends and the rumour begins, but this is reality not fantasy, and every song touches a nerve and makes us think of our own dark times. It is clearly personal and yet every tale has an everyman quality.

Dark times? Yep, they came and put a stop to proceedings in early 2002, just as RD were about to start promoting ‘Melancholics..’. Both Simms and Gilmore had spanners put in their works and though the break was meant to be temporary, it is only now, 10 years later, that both are able to pick up where they left off. They are not going to dwell on the past, but want to make up for lost time and right a few wrongs. They have put together a new band of experienced musicians in Boyd, Causby & Lisk. They’re all fans of the album but rather than pretend they can just pick up where they left off, the band is going to create their own persona that may be slightly different to that of 2001. The songs from ‘Melancholics Anonymous’ will be the start but not the be all and end all.

The band rehearsed through the Summer culminating with their debut performance at AiirFest in late July. Since then the band have embarked on a series of gigs to raise their profile. Already though it is clear the band is creating its own identity musically with 3 new songs already making their live set.

It is very much a case of the old Rumour Den is dead, long live Rumour Den.

Of course…it could be just a rumour 8-)

Dark Beauty

About: Dark Beauty

In a music scene where cookie cutter performers claim to be unique, Dark Beauty combines elements of dance, rock, opera, theater and world music into a true one-of-a-kind experience. The band’s classically influenced gothic alternative progressive rock gives fans a way to stretch their ears and experience styles and mixtures of music that they’ve never heard before.

Lead Vocalist and Songwriter Liz Tapia began this journey back in 2009 when she wrote and recorded the first song from the project “Save Yourself.” The song mixed a Middle Eastern beat with Santana-esque guitars, gothic lyrics and a soaring melody, beseeching a lover to turn away before it was too late. The song became instantly popular with fans of many musical styles, leading her to pursue the project and its main character on a grander scale.

Dark Beauty has since become a concept album depicting the tragic tale of the Dark Angel, and her tragic tale fall from grace. Banished from heaven she is pulled down from grace above, falling deep into the woods of the dark primeval forest. With a broken wing she now rules an old abandoned castle, containing secret passages, hidden staircases, and ruined sections.

Liz is a lyric coloratura soprano, whose smooth, warm, versatile voice adds infinite textures to the epic music she writes and performs. Her background in acting, film and musical theater all affect the musical scope and cinematic feel of her work. As complex as the music is, Liz knew the band would require the highest level of musicians possible to fulfill the full potential of her project!

Bryan Zeigler was the first member to join the Dark Beauty team as lead guitarist and co-writer. His years of experience with a multitude of progressive rock bands, as well as knowledge of the music business and arrangement skills were a perfect match. Soon after came the musical talents and versatility of master Drummer/Percussionist Dan Granda, who added a perfect combination of strength and finesse needed to stylize the epic story.

Gary Perkinson joined on bass, lending his classical skills, super easy going personality and wonderful musicianship, to anchor the band with Dan.

Dark Beauty is currently getting airplay by several stations hitting high marks on all charts and growing rapidly. The album is being engineered and produced by Artie Rodriguez, and the first album is scheduled to be released by Spring of 2013.
