The Weepies

About: The Weepies

Indie duo The Weepies have sold more than a million singles and half a million albums; their simple, direct songwriting has sent them to the top of the folk charts in a dozen countries. With more than 100 TV & media placements, they are one of the most licensed current musical groups in the world.

In 2001, a girl walks into a bar…

Her name is Deb Talan. She’s an up and coming singer/songwriter who has garnered tremendous word-of-mouth support and critical praise for her debut CD, Something Burning. Boston’s legendary music venue Club Passim has become her performing-home, but tonight she’s there to check out a new songwriter she’s been obsessing over, a musician from New York City named Steve Tannen. She’s been listening to his debut CD, Big Señorita, non-stop for about a month.

Guy walks into a bar…

His name is Steve Tannen. He’s at Club Passim in Boston to play a show supporting his debut release, Big Señorita. He’s been playing rock and roll in NYC dive bars for a couple of years, but since the release of his solo CD he’s garnered tremendous word-of-mouth support and critical praise. He’s nervous because Boston is a new town for him, but he’s even more nervous once he looks out at the crowded room and recognizes the pretty young woman down front as singer/songwriter Deb Talan. In a word, he’s intimidated; he’s been obsessing over her debut CD, Something Burning, non-stop for about a month.

Deb Talan and Steve Tannen began writing together the night they first met and soon formed THE WEEPIES. “We were fans of each other. When we met, there was an electric connection that made us both nervous. After the show, when everyone went home, we stayed up all night playing songs for each other, drinking a bottle of wine and trading an acoustic guitar back and forth in a tiny apartment,” says Talan. "That night has lasted ten years so far," adds Tannen.

A breath of fresh air for fans of songwriters, The Weepies features two unique voices and one unforgettable sound. With a self-released debut and three CDs on Nettwerk Records, the duo has become an indie success story, each release ranking among the top 10 digitally downloaded in the US. After a three year touring hiatus – during which time they got married, had two children and made two records - the band returned to touring in late 2010, playing 26 sold out shows across America. The Weepies now live in Southern California and are working on another album.

Cardinals

About: Cardinals

Named after a street walked nightly during long recording sessions, Cardinals has quickly moved from a high school jazz bands simple indie project to a name more demanding in their hometown. Additionally the band recently secured a worldwide distribution deal with Alternative Empire (Crystalyne)

Cardinals take on more and more experience in writing, playing live and recording. The self-entitled, self-produced EP "Cardinals" is designed to be a statement of the power of simplicity that the trio have honed through years of practice and natural talent. With a second music video being shot, and a Spring tour in the works, the band seeks to grow their fan base internationally through hard work and honest music.

Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys

About: Lucy Kruger & The Lost Boys

There are few things as inspiring as pure, unfettered talent in a hard-working, humble artist. Lucy Kruger is one of the few artists on the SA music scene that possesses all of these attributes and it shows in her work.

Originally from Grahamstown, Lucy (now 23) recently arrived in Cape Town after completing her undergraduate degree in Music and her Honours in Drama at Rhodes University, and is set to take the notoriously hardnosed Mother City music scene by storm with her fresh take on indie/alternative rock. Her singular sound is reminiscent of the fearless, female vocals of powerful acts like
Sinéad O’Connor and Dolores O’Riordan from The Cranberries fame and also draws influence from the work of Joni Mitchell, Kate Bush, Alanis Morissette and Tori Amos – culminating in a rich tapestry of skilful, versatile vocals bolstered by soulful melodies.

Lucy has been writing and performing her own material for six plus years and has in the past had the pleasure to open for international act Linton Kwezi Johnson (LKJ), as well as respected local acts such as Josie Field, Wendy Oldfield, Cutting Jade and Shawn Phillips. Since arriving in Cape Town Lucy has treated audiences to foot-tapping performances at the likes of Daddy Longlegs, Alma Café, the Jolly Roger Pastis, Mojos, &Union, Obviouzly Armchair, Cape Quarter Market, Hout Bay Harbour Market, 5 Reyneveld, Aan De Braak and the Barleycorn.

Her debut album ‘Cut those Strings’(produced by Schalk Joubert and engineered by Dave Langemann) , features a host of innovative artists including Inge Beckmann, Schalk Joubert, Kevin Gibson, Melissa Van Der Spuy and Albert Frost, yet remains true to the folk sound her growing fan-base has come to know and love.

Says Lucy of how she came to make music: “I started playing guitar because I wanted to write music. One of the first songs I learnt on the guitar was Joni Mitchell’s ‘A Case of You’. After hearing that song and feeling what it was to play it, I was completely hooked. After setting my heart on music I was constantly reminded (and still am) about how difficult the music industry is. Difficult perhaps, but hopefully not impossible. I want and love it enough to give it (and myself) a fighting chance. I am slowly starting to discover the rules of an industry that ‘has no rules’. It is certainly keeping me on my toes and that is an exciting place to be.”

It is this strong work ethic and drive to succeed that underscores all of Lucy’s endeavours and it set to launch her inimitable sound on the SA music scene.

Tom Moriarty

 About: Tom Moriarty

Tom Moriarty is an established British singer songwriter.  He released a debut album in 2012 entitled “Fire in the Doll’s House”, with one single from the album making the Radio 2 playlist and national spot plays for other tracks. The album was awarded 4 stars by Q mag, Guitarist, Maverick and OK magazine and was written up in the Sunday Times culture section. Tom quickly followed up his first album with an EP in 2013 entitled “Snapshots of Reality” to rave reviews on World United Music

“Tom Moriarty’s five song EP Snapshots of Reality is the music worlds hidden gem of 2013 as it raced to the top 10 in a year that saw hundreds of Independent artists reach the spotlight on the World United Music Playlists. Well named, Snapshots of Reality does just that as the music and lyrics combine to bring out meaningful expressions that resonate with the listener while serving a very satisfying blend of rolling mellow sounds. “Snapshots of Reality” is Awesome! ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music

Shortly after the release of his stellar EP “Snapshots of Reality” Tom suffered a severe concussion that forced him to withdraw from music for a while.

In January 2015 Tom released the single “Me and the Sun” which was from his forth coming second album, “The Road”. The material had been ready in 2013 but had to be postponed due to the incapacity that followed Tom’s severe concussion. The full 10-song album was just released in August 2015 and is quickly becoming a favourite for many of his fans. Check out Tom’s music and sign up to his website to find out more about this exceptional artist.

Celestial Bums

About: Celestial Bums

Rock could hardly be just music. It is a range of creative disciplines and outlets. It's music, of course but it's also interpreting, role playing, and thus theater and poetry too. Rock is the perfect medium to intertwine the two true sources of art: The dionisian and the apollinean. What is inebriating, and what is dream-like. When rock is played and interpreted, when musicians don't play or sing, but recite, rock is more than music, it is the ultimate form of art.

Rock is our legacy as Europeans, our outlet to give an escape valve to the most primary of our creative urges. Rock twists you with pain and passions. A relatively new ritual, but that reflects the basic elements of the Greek tragedy.

And it is art that is the ultimate objective of our existence, here and now, the noblest way to express what's on our souls. Sacred ritual and self-realization.

Wheat Fields

About: Wheat Fields

Wheat Fields is a Psychedelic group based in the Blue Mountains Australia. They have released two mesmerizing EP’s on Bandcamp to date and are certainly destined for greater things.

Saturnalia: Released 07 May 2013

Saturnalia was the name of a pagan celebration held in December in ancient Rome, honouring the god Saturn. Likewise, this EP was conceived during a December camping trip on the north coast of NSW; a group of under-20 year old friends with tents at the beach consuming fruit and psychedelics amongst goannas and dingoes.

The second phase of ‘Saturnalia’ began in January 2013. A studio, ‘Shabby Road’, was created in core member Josch Dinjar’s living room, and quickly recording began, punctuated by nude swims and coffee. In DIY spirit, it incorporated MP3 players, strange stereo systems found in sheds, old tape decks, mysteriously customised effect pedals, and mixing techniques that the band virtually ‘made up’. It all makes for one layered, luscious, nostalgic listen.

Composers - Mitch Hunter (Guitars, Bass, Vocals, Synths), Zak Baillie (Guitars, Bass), and Josch Dinjar (Guitars, Drums, Bass, Production).
Live Members - Maddie Harriott (Vocals, Percussion), Glenn Hopper (Organ, Piano, Synth), additional drumming by Harley Dorrell.
Cover Art and Design by Tom Groves

First EP: Heaven Is A Place Where Nothing Ever Happens – Released June 6th, 2012

Ashley Condon

About: Ashley Condon

Raised between two potato fields on Prince Edward Island, Ashley Condon is the grandchild of Bill Leblanc, a Canadian country pioneer who once spent the night in jail with Hank Snow. Like pecan pie – sweet and nutty – Ashley has won audiences over with her larger-than-life stage presence and down-to-earth charm. Growing up on everything from old-time country to folk, blues and soul, her music resonates.

The success of her 2007 EP I’ve Got This Feeling garnered the attention of Ontario native and ECMA-nominated producer and musician Joel Hunt (Teresa Ennis, Old Man Leudecke). The two joined creative forces for Ashley’s debut, full-length album Come In From The Cold, released on June 15, 2010. Since its release in 2010, Come In From The Cold has been nominated for a 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award, a 2011 East Coast Music Award and has earned the rising star two 2012 Music PEI Awards for “New Artist Of The Year” and the “Lynn Grishko Memorial Bursary”. Her highly anticipated sophomore album This Great Compromise is set for release on May 28th, 2013 and was produced by Condon’s songwriting hero; three-time JUNO award winning singer-songwriter David Francey . Condon is backed on the album by Francey’s touring band of Chris Coole (banjo, guitar) and Mark Westberg (guitar), John Showman (fiddle) and by celebrated Maritime multi-instrumentalist Darren McMullen.

The signature track on her Francey-produced sophomore album, This Great Compromise, is “Betty’s Song,” a tribute to Condon’s mother and a wistful lament over Condon’s inability, as a teenager to appreciate her mother’s strength and perseverance. Other highlights include “Gentle Man,” a haunting number about an encounter with a stranger; “We’ve Got Love,” a simple love song with a very Francey-like sing-along chorus; “I’m Going Home, Amen,” a rollicking gospel song about moving back to PEI; and the title track, a sophisticated statement about the impact on relationships when partners must leave the province for work.

Having lost both her parents by the age of 22, it is not surprising that Condon’s music is marked by an astonishing degree of maturity and nuance – the kind almost never heard in emerging artists. She has established a reputation in the Maritimes as a powerful writer and singer and an uncommonly-talented entertainer who jokes and tells stories to audiences as naturally as if they were guests in her living room.

Ashley will be doing a national tour of Canada in fall 2013 to support her new album and is playing several Canadian folk festivals this summer including The Stan Rogers Folk Festival, The Lunenburg Folk Harbour Festival and The Shelter Valley Folk Festival.

QUOTES:

“The finest writer and performer I have heard in many years. There is not a song on this record that I wouldn’t gladly claim as my own.” – David Francey, singer-songwriter

“One of the new leading lights on the East Coast scene” - Bob Mersereau, CBC

“Ashley Condon brings to the music industry a sweet down-to-earth tone that truly captivates the listener and brings to light a joyfulness of acoustic singer-songwriter styles” - Maverick Magazine UK

Secret Colours

About: Secret Colours

Secret Colours revel in being the bastard seed of the '60s psychedelia and '90s Britpop bloodlines. Since their eponymous debut in 2010, the band moved swiftly from neophyte in the Chicago psychedelic-newgaze scene to crusader over the course of unforgettable performances at Austin Psych Fest and Levitation in 2012. Appearances with Night Beats, Ringo Deathstarr, Elephant Stone, Spindrift, Asteroid #4, and The Warlocks, have continued to keep Secret Colours in the hearts and minds of their Chicago faithful, but all the while, they've been hard at work with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse, Gomez, Sage Francis, Iron & Wine) sharpening the edges of their polychromatic sophomore album, Peach.

The songs from the sleeker collective of Tommy Evans, Dave Stach, Justin Frederick, and Eric Hehr are definitively next level, but are still drenched in the sound that will help you to turn on, tune in, and drop out. Secret Colours released their latest LP “Positive Distractions Part 1” on Feb 4th, 2014.

Wayne Reynolds

About: Wayne Reynolds

Singer, songwriter, and guitarist Wayne Reynolds doesn’t want to be fenced in. From the beginning of his musical life all the way up to the present moment, he has consistently avoided kowtowing to any brand of musical dogma. “I’m reminded,” muses Reynolds, “of the exhortation by none other than Bobby McFerrin that we should not live in the same musical room all the time. Walk around, don't get stuck.”

It should be no surprise, then, that when it comes to musical breeds, Reynolds is a bit of a mongrel, and proud of it. His album, Another Day Goes By, contains elements of folk, pop, jazz, classical, bossa nova, and more, all filtered through the singular sensibility that’s unique to the man steering the songs.

Despite the easygoing, understated tone of many of the tracks on Another Day Goes By, and the earthy, organic feel of the production, Reynolds comes from a family with close connections to the classical tradition. Not only was his great-grandfather William Burnet Tuthill the acclaimed architect behind the creation of Carnegie Hall and a gifted musician to boot, Reynolds’ grandfather and parents were also classically trained players. Much to his parents’ dismay, their guitar-playing offspring ended up playing in several rock bands as a teenager in Memphis. Though nobody knew it at the time, the last of these, The Jokers, would have a close tie to rock & roll history. “This band played a lot in clubs and shows in the area and had several members that became part of The Box Tops,” remembers Reynolds. “I was only 15, several years younger than the others, and when they quit school to play with [Box Tops singer/future Big Star frontman] Alex Chilton and the others, I declined, or really, was denied by my parents, as you can imagine.”

There may be an alternate universe where Reynolds stayed the course with his Memphis bandmates and ended up as part of the group that we know for scaling the late-‘60s charts with “The Letter” and “Cry Like a Baby.” But in our reality, true to his lifelong eclectic nature, he investigated other musical areas instead. Reynolds then met classical guitar legend Christopher Parkening, who was just a young man himself at the time, and was impressed enough to begin a serious study of guitar technique. “Through high school and college I kept at it and eventually went to music school on a scholarship to study with the great Cuban guitarist, Juan Mercadal,” recalls Reynolds of his artistic evolution.

Though Reynolds became well versed in classical guitar, he recalls, “I was always arranging some pop standards to play for pure fun.” By the time he became a part of the music faculty at the University of Memphis, Reynolds was moving into still more new territory, crafting soundtrack music for public television programs. But all the while, there was yet another place Reynolds’ constantly shifting muse was gradually leading him, towards the creation of Another Day Goes By.

“Over a few years I had written a group of songs that I was playing for friends,” explains Reynolds. “They were very impressed by the different quality they heard in the tunes and insisted that I do something about recording them.” The musical mélange that Reynolds’ friends heard, in advance of the public at large, was partly the product of his idiosyncratic influences (everything from bossa nova masters Baden Powell and Joao Gilberto to pop tunesmiths Jimmy Webb and Billy Joel) and partly his own set of musical fingerprints.

“We eventually went to work getting the songs arranged and recorded,” says Reynolds of the production process for Another Day Goes By. “We developed the arrangements more or less in real time with the rhythm section, and then multiple overdubs for the soprano sax, background singers, and the rest.” Though the record has a rich, full sound and finds Reynolds supported by a full band of obviously empathetic players, the arrangements are acoustic-oriented and the album retains a light, airy feel. There’s breathing space between the instruments, a natural-sounding vibe that’s sonically succinct but still feels somehow spontaneous.

The fluid finger-picking acoustic guitar patterns that drive the opening track, the romance-filled “All I’ll Ever Need,” give an indication right off the bat that Reynolds knows his way around a fretboard but isn’t one for hitting listeners over the head with ostentatious licks. At the same time, the seemingly classical-inspired guitar lines that light up “A Little Gray” could only come from the hands of someone with a lifetime of technique at their command. The combination of jazzy, minor-key moves and Reynolds’ warm, deep vocal tones on the album’s closing cut, “If You Walked Into My Life,” hark back to an era when it was still possible to turn on a Top 40 station and hear an accessible-but-sophisticated ballad like George Benson’s “This Masquerade.” And from the welcoming, James Taylor-like folk-pop feel of “Focus on the Love” to the plangent electric guitar coloring and insistent rhythm of “How to Be Me,” Another Day Goes By adheres to the open-ended artistic ethos that has sustained Reynolds since the beginning of his musical journey. When he says, “I want to have as broad and complete an offering as I can. I am challenged by all musical idioms and admire those artists who play lots of styles very well,” even a casual listen to this album proves that he takes those sentiments to heart.

Ursina

About: Ursina

Ursina is a singer songwriter born and raised in a small village high up in the swiss mountains. Very early on Ursina felt the urge to express herself through music through the classic music she experienced in her early life at home and later through her study of Jazz music.

Pop music has always been a strong influence in Ursina’s life, especially through bands from scandinavia. The Scandinavian music captured her attention so much that she packed her bag and travelled to copenhagen in 2010, where she played music and wrote new songs. The results brought forth her first EP called “LONTAN”, which was recorded with her swiss/danish band “URSINA'S DANISH LABORATORY” and released in january 2012. This collaboration and experiment soon came to an end when ursina returned to switzerland.

Never one to sit still, Ursina soon began writing new music and released her second EP titled “TIME IS A THIEF”. The EP was released April 25th, 2013 on Bancamp.

Ursina released a new EP on Januaury 31st, 2014 titled “Hiding Behind a Mask”.
