My music is for the masses and for individuals. Utopian? No. The problem we face today is the poor musical education of the masses, in the figurative or literal through the labeling applied to artists and their work. All supports a good head, is a statement that I sold long ago.

Today, the musical discussion tends to be poor and capricious, based on anecdotal rather than on technical or conceptual; and even on that basis, poor terms are released in form and substance. But I’m not delving into anything.

The music press is the best example of that aridity in music education. It leads by invoking references or comparisons. Artists are granted identity in this popular form and denied the unknown. That is the great absurdity of the music industry bubble: The vast majority of musicians and music lovers are indoctrinated to label categories, because they are highly permeable and conditioned…But that is not the only Great Cultural Problem; Just Boast of rebellion and all that underlies the natural state of things when submitting music to the social cultural environment and you will find that all preliminary agreements and contacts are out the window.

And for all this I have reached that wonderful point of maturity where you know the drill, distinguish, authenticate…Culture offers a playground game, where you simulate infinite intelligence and virtue but that has never interested me, and so one should really not be interested if one seeks real development, especially when one is figured to be considered socially wrong.

Masic as Expression

Do you really understand what you hear? I ask myself daily, why I do what I do and not what those who judge me do. Judges watch from the sidelines, pretending to participate in Art when they really only repress the impulse that feeds it. They judge and think they can coerce music to their influence.

The artist is not a servant, the artist is one who seeks when filled with wonder and vision and creates without questioning.

All this has been said before and better, I say it because I just need to remember it Everyday, if possible…

Celestial Bums

Rock could hardly be just music. It is a range of creative disciplines and outlets. It's music, of course but it's also interpreting, role playing, and thus theater and poetry too. Rock is the perfect medium to intertwine the two true sources of art: The dionisian and the apollinean. What is inebriating, and what is dream-like. When rock is played and interpreted, when musicians don't play or sing, but recite, rock is more than music, it is the ultimate form of art.

Rock is our legacy as Europeans, our outlet to give an escape valve to the most primary of our creative urges. Rock twists you with pain and passions. A relatively new ritual, but that reflects the basic elements of the Greek tragedy.

And it is art that is the ultimate objective of our existence, here and now, the noblest way to express what's on our souls. Sacred ritual and self-realization.

One Arctic One

If you’re not growing, you’re dying. Luckily, the continually evolving One Arctic One has no reason to fear the reaper. Through half a dozen EPs and singles independently released over the past decade, what began as a solo project for versatile NWT via BC guitarist and songwriter Marcus Martin has progressed to include the bass, keys, and backing vocals of Kirsten Starcher in 2006, and, since that time, various session/live drummers. While there has been a stylistic consistency throughout their catalogue, care of Martin’s guiding vision, the sound of Vancouver’s One Arctic One has become fully-realized as of late.

Where their early recordings and live shows were based on Martin looping himself in a downtempo, acoustic fashion, current releases and performances –as witnessed in extensive tours across Canada and Europe– now lean toward a more collaborative feel with occasional flourishes of structured improvisation. Martin’s emotive vocals and informed guitar technique soar within their hybrid rock sound, a mix of acoustic and electric guitars and drums wrapped in synthesis and ethereal effects. Early Snow Patrol and Radiohead come to mind as they interpret influences from ’90s alternative, prog, and post-rock in their signature propulsive yet contemplative aesthetic. Imagine, perhaps, a more solemn ∆ (Alt-J) or Metric with orchestral touches.

That being said, the time to make comparisons with One Arctic One’s sound is drawing to a close. Truly becoming themselves in the studio, their latest recordings are the closest yet to capturing the feel and intensity of their live shows. The band’s synergy is on full display here, produced under the guide of master engineer Shawn Penner (Mother Mother, Hannah Georgas). These tracks are totally in the moment and elaborate in their production, expanding their sound from traditional rock clubs to a more stadium sized presence. All the tasteful synthetic and lush organic sounds are dynamically intertwined, ebbing and flowing at a natural pace, yet teeming with a compelling urgency so vibrant you’d swear the band was in your headphones.

It’s no wonder they’ve moved on from the name ARCTIC to become One Arctic One. They are a completely different beast now than at the inception. Accept no substitutes. There is only One Arctic One.
