Lights that Change

About: Lights that Change

Lights That Change is an alternative Dream Pop ethereal wave outfit, hailing from North Wales and headed by Marc Joy. After many years producing other artists, he finally turned his attention towards his own creative endeavours. Thus was born “Lights That Change”, channelling new energies into creating horizons of perfect dreamscapes, primarily based on guitars.

Lights That Change released their debut EP ‘Rainbow On Your Shoulder’ in 2013, followed by ‘Whispers in February’ and have received support from BBC, Tom Robinson, and Amazing Radio, among others.

Over the past year, Lights That Change have undergone a reformation, with Mandy Clare on vocals, John Bryan on bass and Marc Joy on guitars. They are now gearing up to release their debut LP ‘Byzantium’ this summer, which includes guest vocals from Rebecca Palin (Golden Fable) and drum programming from Mal Holmes (Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark).

“I’m extremely happy to be involved in Lights That Change,” says Mal Holmes. “This has given me the freedom to create something special for ‘Voices’ and the new album doing what I love to do … this is why I started playing drums in the first place”.

We proudly present the first single from this forthcoming album, entitled ‘Voices’, chalked full of ethereal wave post-punk magic reminiscent of 4AD’s golden era. Here Mandy Clare lays mesmerizing vocals over a bed of drifting, powerfully moving soundscapes. Lights That Change will also be bringing their new permanent lineup to U.K. live audiences soon.

About Ear to Ear Records: In the words of Creation Records co-founder Joe Foster, "Ear To Ear Records are a new Welsh/Canadian label in the spirit of Creation and 4AD and just as obsessed as that!" Founded in Wales in 2013, the label specialises in dream pop, shoegaze, and alt indie rock. Recent releases include the ‘Revolution - The Shoegaze Revival’ compilation (free download with 30 bands from 16 countries), as well as the debut single from Tape Runs Out (Cambridge), and EPs from Blood Lips (Manchester-Wales) and Sounds of Sputnik feat. Ummagma (Russia-Canada-Ukraine).

Drenge

About: Drenge

Drenge are an English two-piece alternative rock band, based in Castleton, Derbyshire, Sheffield. The band is made up of Eoin Loveless, on guitar and vocals, and his younger brother Rory, on drums. They take their name from the Danish word for "boys", although it is pronounced differently.

The band rose to prominence following the resignation of Labour MP Tom Watson from the Shadow Cabinet in July 2013, who wrote in his resignation letter on his blog "be that great Labour leader that you can be, but try to have a real life too. And if you want to see an awesome band, I recommend Drenge." However, they had a small following and had been picked up by national media at least some seven months previously.

Drenge have toured extensively in the UK, also appearing at Glastonbury Festival, Latitude Festival, and will be at the upcoming Reading and Leeds Festival. They have also toured with Californian duo Deap Vally, including an appearance close to their hometown at Sheffield's Queens Social Club. They also toured with British band Peace in late 2013. They played a headline tour in the first half of 2014, as well as playing at many festivals over the summer of 2014, including Reading and Leeds, Glastonbury and T in the Park.

In recent activity Drenge have toured the UK alongside American punk rock band Radkey, appeared on Later... with Jools Holland, and their single "Bloodsports" was used for an advert for British TV show Misfits, fitting the crude, aggressive nature of the show. They were also nominated for Zane Lowe's top 100 hottest records of 2013 with the single "Bloodsports".

Their self-titled album was released on 19 August 2013 on Infectious Records. The artwork for the album features a photograph of Wardsend Cemetery in Sheffield and a nearby scrapyard.

On 27 January 2015, they made their US network television debut on the Late Show with David Letterman.

On 6 April 2015, the band's second album, Undertow, was released, debuting at number 14 on the UK Albums Chart.

For their tour in 2015 the band included a bassist in their live line-up as well as in their new single "We Can Do What We Want".

Band Members:
Eoin Loveless – lead vocals, guitar (2011–present)
Rory Loveless – drums, percussion, backing vocals (2011–present)

Touring and session members
Rob Graham – bass, backing vocals (2014–present)

If, for some reason, you've always wanted to know about the effort and consideration we put in to Undertow, we've put together a little track by track video. It's features my best Philomena Cunk impression, the over use of the word "like", some basic painting skills and useful statements such as "this song isn't really about anything." Hope you find it as insightful and useful as it was intended to be.

Race to the Sea

About: Race to the Sea

Race to the Sea is the musical guise of Dan Peacock, Manchester-based songwriter and instrumentalist.

The project began a few years ago as a full band of the same name, with Peacock providing the song writing, vocals and guitar for a series of acclaimed gigs on the Manchester circuit. When the band split, he took off on a trip across the world, seeking adventure and unwittingly gathering material for the next project. Living in a seaside house on the other side of the world, he found a guitar and began writing what would become the new songs for the new Race to the Sea. These songs are abstract yet personal, with ideas taken from snapshots of a life on the move, and both lyrics and melodies crafted from half-remembered images: memories of the sea, the desert, the forest and the mountains.

In the studio, Race to the Sea’s songs are heavily layered and atmospheric, with textured guitars, synths and percussion. Live shows range from stripped-back acoustic guitar versions, to looped and effected orchestrations, and, more recently, the inclusion of full live percussion and bass.

2013 was a year packed with local headline gigs: supports for Badly Drawn Boy, The Magic Numbers, Mark Morriss and Rebekka Karijord, and a sold-out EP launch at the Castle Hotel. All this led Manchester Evening News to name Race to the Sea as 'One to watch'. Here's what they said:

'Race to the Sea's talent for delicate folk song craft is equally matched by his grasp of experimental, shoegazey atmospherics. With his soulful, breathy vocals, quietly strummed acoustics and judicious use of effects pedals, he’s a one-man indie-folk orchestra, creating music of considerable shape and texture, but with an intimacy and emotional heft that sometimes feels like he’s singing directly into your ear. The missing link between Lost Souls-era Doves, Nick Drake and Cocteau Twins; you don’t so much listen to these songs as allow them to soak blissfully into your synapses.

The Chemistry Set

About: The Chemistry Set

The London psychedelic-pop band The Chemistry Set have quite a history. Veterans of the alternative Manchester label “Imaginary” and cassette only label “Acid Tapes”, they helped lead the neo-psychedelic boom of the late 1980's. During this time The Chemistry Set were featured in the British and European underground press, had mainstream and underground radio play worldwide and countless fanzine appearances, including releasing 3 flexi discs with fanzines (remember them?).

Indeed counting Factory & Hacienda boss Tony Wilson amongst their fans, The Chemistry Set reached the coveted Indie Top 20. Receiving regular airplay on the legendary John Peel’s show (Peel even went so far as to sending the band a hand-written fan letter!), they also toured globally but have held a deep fondness for Spain, making lifelong friends there. The band split in 1991, took a bit of a hiatus, remaining silent… until The Chemistry Set “MACH II” remarkably reappeared in 2008!

Their return came about when their unreleased LP from 1989 “Sounds Like Painting” somehow was uploaded onto numerous blogs and was downloaded over 10,000 times in 2008.

Cult Arranger/songwriter [and former Electric Prunes member] David Axelrod digs The Chemistry Set, saying “Real Music! Music that makes you think and really listen to!” He loved how they added a symphonic section of his song “Sanctus” from The Electric Prunes’ masterwork “Mass in F Minor” into their reworking of Del Shannon’s “Silver Birch”. Originally found on Shannon’s “The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover”, his cult 1968 LP widely acknowledged by aficionados to be the pop milestone of his post-“Runaway” era. This calls to memory the occasion when The Chemistry Set once went so far as to insert a cover version inside of another cover. Their version of “See Emily Play” (for the Syd Barrett tribute “Beyond the Wildwood” [Imaginary]) has the “Bicycle Rider” section of The Beach Boys then still unfinished “Smile” album inserted within the song. Their cover was singled out in glowing reviews of the tribute and was highly noted.

Since the return, the second stage of the group has seen the birth of three new CDs: “Alchemy # 101”, “This Day Will Never Happen Again and “Chemistry is Just Numbers” (Carl Sagan quote). The releases received critical acclaim with mainstream and indie press and radio play in the UK, USA and Europe. In 2011 they released a 7” vinyl single “Impossible Love” (Fruits de Mer), which sold out in just five days. The group have been extremely well received in the USA with regular radio play on alternative and college radio. The band also received a very favourable review in The Sunday Times.

In 2011 the boys took to the stage for the first time in 20 years, augmented by musical friends from Spain (including #1 Spanish indie DJ “Gato”). It brought a whole new dimension to their psychedelic-pop, with even more electronics than the Mellotrons and Farfisas that Chemistry Set fans might be accustomed to. Using instruments and methods old and new, acoustic, electric and electronic, together they were a big surprise at European festivals last year and festival goers enjoyed the extraordinary spectacle of the visual work of VJ Matrona that accompanies the band, who has made installations and visuals in clubs and galleries in New York, London, Barcelona and Buenos Aires, she brings her exquisite modern psychedelic imagery in a nod to atmosphere of UFO club in London in the 1960’s.

In the summer of 2012 the group again played European festivals and in-between returned to their laboratory to demo songs for a new album. Three of the songs: “Time To Breathe”, “Come Kiss Me Vibrate And Smile” and their cover of Tomorrow’s “Hallucinations” was released as a limited edition 7” vinyl single by Fruits de Mer records in October 2012, the single was sold out within 48 hours.

In May 2013 they won the inaugural “Eurovision Psych Contest” organised by Brandish TV as a bit of fun but the psychedelic scientists still received more votes than the young psych flavour of the month Jacco Gardner. As “Citylifers” magazine said…. “The Chemistry Set can – and should – count themselves as part of a long, illustrious line of gently psychedelic guitar pop bands”.

In 2014 The Chemistry Set appeared on the critically acclaimed 3 CD box set tribute to Pink Floyd; "The Many Faces Of Pink Floyd" Other artists included members of King Crimson and The Doors. The boys returned to the laboratory in the spring of 2014 to record more songs for the next album and 2 singles for Fruits de Mer records. The first single will be covers of “Love” to form part of a box set of singles entitled “7 & 7 is” to be released in September. The second single “Elapsed Memories” will be released in November and is a sneak peak of the new material that will be in the new album.

Alexander McKay

About: Alexander McKay

The Turning

About: The Turning

Formed in early 2013, it hasn’t taken long for The Turning to gain a hard working reputation, which is expressed through their constant writing, gigging and promotion of their music. The difference is polaric from many other young bands that have the passion, but lack the mature execution.

Having recently wrapped up an extensive 12-date UK tour, the last 18 months has consisted of multiple sell out headline shows, including Camden Barfly and The Leadmill in Sheffield, supporting artist such as The Strypes and Steve Cradock as well as releasing a 9-track mini album.

The Turning have been developing their very own style; incorporating separate influences, crowd reaction from gigs gone by and a clear vision of where they want to go. This has seen their music mutate, morphing into injections of punk urgency with a refreshing modern flair.

Band Members:

Luke McLaughlin (Vocals/Rhythm Guitar/Harmonica)
David Bardon (Lead Guitar)
Louis Gilbert (Bass)
Ruben Kenton-Harris (Drums)

Tail Feather

About: Tail Feather

Filling rooms around the country with rich vocal harmonies and charged guitar riffs, Tail Feather are creating some of the most exciting groove-led music around.

The band’s first single 'Spellbinder' spotlights the band's bluesy, 70s rock ethos. Teamed with a suitably psychedelic video, the band has received praise from the likes of the 405, Shiny Shiny New and Never Enough Notes.

On stage, Tail Feather manifest a confidence which brings the audience to tipping point; the band have firmly laid their hat and made a home in some of the best live venues the UK has to offer.

Currently working with producer Graham Dominy (Robert Plant, Ray Davies) on a slew of new material, the latest offering from the foursome comes in the form of the double A side – ‘Knocked Down/All of a Sudden’

Crafted in a vintage style, recorded to analog tape and brandishing an array of influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Peter Green's era Fleetwood Mac, be sure to download the release come March.

"...a smotheringly psychedelic affair made light by lucid riffs and soft-rock melodies that seem torn from Fleetwood Mac’s songbook." - Shiny Shiny New

"Thumping, catchy, and sun-glazed - Tail Feather bring nostalgia and soul together for a 70s indebted experience." - The 405

“...Spellbinder brings awesome psychedelia together with yearning 80s groovy solos: an exciting throwback combination for a band you need to keep an eye out for.” - Never Enough Notes.

Temples

About: Temples

Temples are an English psychedelic rock band, formed in Kettering, Northamptonshire in 2012, by singer-guitarist James Edward Bagshaw and bassist Thomas Edison Warmsley. They have received considerable press attention during their short existence and have been cited by Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher as one of the best new bands in Britain.

The band was initially formed as a home studio project in mid 2012. The duo had previously worked together in The Moons, with Bagshaw also having co-fronted another earlier Kettering band Sukie who formed in 2006 and charted at No 1 in the UK Indie Chart with their debut single "Pink-A-Pade". Sukie were featured in the fanzine "Siren", edited and created by Warmsley to documents Kettering's music scene.

The duo uploaded four self produced tracks to YouTube which caught the attention of Heavenly Recordings founder Jeff Barrett who agreed to release the band's debut single in the form of "Shelter Song" in November 2012. They then enlisted fellow Kettering residents drummer Sam Toms (Secret Fix and ex-Koolaid Electric Company) and keyboard player Adam Smith and started rehearsing as band to be able to play their songs live, having never played live as a band before. The band released their second single "Colours To Life" in June 2013.

Having played major UK and European festival and supported the likes of Suede, Mystery Jets, Kasabian and The Vaccines alongside select headline dates, the band announced their first headline UK tour to take place in October 2013. In November 2013, Temples announced their debut album, Sun Structures, to be released on 10 February 2014.

John Deck

About: John Deck

John Deck has been writing music for much of his life but never performed publicly or made his music generally accessible. Aside from collaborations on which he has worked with teachers for performance by children in schools, his music has not seen the light of day.

John Deck tells stories in his music and the songs reflect both recent and past experiences in his life. His preference is to write songs for other performers although the most important thing for him is that people enjoy his music.

After much cajoling by people close to him, he has been persuaded to put his music into the public eye. This album, titled “Part of Me” to reflect one of the songs and the important part music has played in his life, is the end product.

The album would not have been possible without immense help from Rob Aubrey, recording engineer and owner of Aubitt Studios in Southampton, and Steve Thorne, a Southampton-based singer/songwriter, who, in addition to playing a leading part in the arrangement of the music on the album, features in most of the songs. Marlene Hill, a singer/performer from Portsmouth, has also been a star in lending her wonderful voice to two of the tracks. In addition, thanks are due to Tim Payne for his acoustic guitar work on tracks 2 and 4.

Entirely self-funded, this album may turn out to be the only one John Deck ever makes. That will depend on public reaction to it and you are invited to let him know what you think.

The Dusk

About: The Dusk

The Dusk were an indie/electro rock band formed in Cheshire (UK) in 2010. After several personnel changes the core group members of James Grierson (vocals, acoustic guitar), Alastair Gunn (guitars, keyboards), Janssen Bostock (drums and percussion) and Dave Jones (Bass) released their debut EP, entitled 'Falling', on Crying Boy Records. This EP, produced by Simon Jones of seminal north-west bands The Verve and Black Submarine, was released on 3rd December 2012 and is available on all good digital music stores.

The Dusk weren’t the next big thing. They weren't the new musical revolution. They weren't the voice of angst-ridden youth. And they didn't aspire to ring in a new political order. They were just four people who made sounds. Great sounds. The Dusk disbanded in October 2012. For more information about The Dusk please PM through the Facebook page:
