Race to the Sea

About: Race to the Sea

Race to the Sea is the musical guise of Dan Peacock, Manchester-based songwriter and instrumentalist.

The project began a few years ago as a full band of the same name, with Peacock providing the song writing, vocals and guitar for a series of acclaimed gigs on the Manchester circuit. When the band split, he took off on a trip across the world, seeking adventure and unwittingly gathering material for the next project. Living in a seaside house on the other side of the world, he found a guitar and began writing what would become the new songs for the new Race to the Sea. These songs are abstract yet personal, with ideas taken from snapshots of a life on the move, and both lyrics and melodies crafted from half-remembered images: memories of the sea, the desert, the forest and the mountains.

In the studio, Race to the Sea’s songs are heavily layered and atmospheric, with textured guitars, synths and percussion. Live shows range from stripped-back acoustic guitar versions, to looped and effected orchestrations, and, more recently, the inclusion of full live percussion and bass.

2013 was a year packed with local headline gigs: supports for Badly Drawn Boy, The Magic Numbers, Mark Morriss and Rebekka Karijord, and a sold-out EP launch at the Castle Hotel. All this led Manchester Evening News to name Race to the Sea as 'One to watch'. Here's what they said:

'Race to the Sea's talent for delicate folk song craft is equally matched by his grasp of experimental, shoegazey atmospherics. With his soulful, breathy vocals, quietly strummed acoustics and judicious use of effects pedals, he’s a one-man indie-folk orchestra, creating music of considerable shape and texture, but with an intimacy and emotional heft that sometimes feels like he’s singing directly into your ear. The missing link between Lost Souls-era Doves, Nick Drake and Cocteau Twins; you don’t so much listen to these songs as allow them to soak blissfully into your synapses.

Ending Satellites

About: Ending Satellites

Ending Satellites is a project that is both musical and visual, whose main ambition is to offer to who may wish to undertake, a journey out of time, within a few moments, in a universe where images become melodies.

At the same time, Ending Satellites is an eclectic artistic entity, evolving around the compositions and shots of Damien Dufour, but also shaped by the different personalities that come together in this project.

At the beginning of Ending Satellites, there was the end of something; to be born in his epilogue, another journey.

~ Francais~

Brett Shady

About: Brett Shady

Of the songs on his debut full-length album “The Devil to Pay”, Brett Shady says, "These are songs that were written out of frustration more than anything else." Having performed as a frontman for rock and punk bands for fifteen years, Brett began writing songs four years ago after a cross-country tour with the band Golden Shoulders. "I needed more artistic control and the opportunity to express myself that I wasn't getting performing other people's music."

With such disparate influences as Elliott Smith, Marty Robbins, Paul Simon, and Sam Cooke, Brett's songs paint a picture of heartbreak and regret and raise questions of good and evil deeply rooted in the American song writing tradition. Most of the ten songs on The Devil to Pay were written about his move from Northern California's gold country to LA ten years ago, a period Brett says was "full of isolation and depression and struggling to find my place in the world." Recorded in Nevada City, California by renowned engineer/producer Dana Gumbiner, the album features an ensemble of veteran musicians and is available at most online stores.

Brett released his follow up album, “National Hotel” Novemeber 11th, 2014 which continues his unique blend of Folk, Pop, and Americana Alternative Rock that solidifies his style, his song character, and his appeal to a growing audience of music starved fans. “Brett Shady” is the real deal.

Shelters

About: Shelters

Shelters is one part Marshall Usinger, one part Shelly Rollison, and a lot of friends along the way.  The duo met almost five years ago at a house party, but it's only been in the past few years they've started writing together.

Although they exchanged many potential song ideas and developed a few of them, it wasn't until the end of 2013 that a handful of the songs started to find their way.  The result was their debut EP, “All These Heavy Things”, released on iTunes June 17th.

The debut EP of Shelters combines Marshall's rock/punk roots with Shelly's folk/acoustic stylings.  The band hopes to keep developing their sound and are already writing songs for their next album.  If good things come to those who wait, then this is just the start of many good things.

The Lucid Dream

About: The Lucid Dream

The Lucid Dream were formed in Carlisle, Cumbria, in 2008.

Whilst continuing to work on their second album, The Lucid Dream released a brand new 7" single, “Moonstruck” b/w “The Emptiest Place”, on 24th February 2014 via Too Pure, as part of their singles club.

On the back of 'Erbistock Mill' EP, and 3 sold-out 7" single releases ('Love In My Veins' 'Heartbreak Girl' 'Hits Me Like I'm Stoned'), the band gained acclaim from the likes of NME, Q, Frank Skinner (Absolute Radio), Steve Lamacq (BBC Radio 2 'Listeners Tip of the Week'), and major support from BBC 6 Music (Nemone 'Record of the Weekend', Lauren Laverne, Gideon Coe, Tom Robinson).

Following on from this, The Lucid Dream were selected as full UK tour support to A Place To Bury Strangers, and in turn supported Death In Vegas, one of the main modern day influences upon the band. This was on the back of supports to Spectrum, Crocodiles, Captain Beefheart's 'The Magic Band', and The Aliens, to name a few. The Lucid Dream have also established themselves as a live force across Europe, covering 14 countries within the last 12 months.

The long-awaited debut album, 'Songs Of Lies and Deceit', was released on 5th August 2013 (on CD/download via Holy Are You Recordings, and on limited vinyl via The Great Pop Supplement, who have released the likes of Wooden Shjips, MGMT, Martin Rev (Suicide), Spacemen 3, Spectrum). The initial vinyl pressing of 500 copies sold out within 3 days.

Critical acclaim for the album was received from Uncut, Q, Clash, The Quietus, The Skinny, leading French magazine 'Les Inrocks', and Stuart Maconie's 'Freak Zone' on BBC 6 Music, to name a few. The album coincided with shows at the likes of Jodrell Bank Live (to an audience of 5,000), a hugely successful slot at the Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia, and a headline tour throughout Europe.

'Moonstruck' b/w 'The Emptiest Place' is released on 24th February 2014, on 7" coloured vinyl, via Too Pure.

Second Hand Heart

About: Second Hand Heart

Arresting, soulful and raw in its execution, Second Hand Heart's album “Tides” is a self-assured debut release where melodies sprout from a nocturnal mood with a disarming intensity. A collection of neo-folk compositions, Tides speaks of longing, truth and courage.

Critical acclaim has been simmering for the quintet, receiving solid airplay across Australian community radio and on Triple J, UK glossies to Australian dailies to international blogs:

“cinematic… lush… delicate… serene… emotive… dynamic… integral… chilling… vibrant… moving… breathtakingly intimate…stunning… simmers… climactic…sensory bliss”

Following the release and sell-out launch of band’s first EP in 2011, Second Hand Heart tested the waters recording catchy alt-pop song ‘Trouble’, in a makeshift studio in Balwyn in 2012. “Our perspective changed over time… in the beginning we started to mix with crisp and polished production in mind. As we got deeper into the recording process, we realised that we wanted to capture the feeling with all it’s organic faults and flaws” says guitarist John Waller.

Tides fuses intricate instrumentation with splashes of delay and washes of cymbals. In 2013 Second Hand Heart reached a new level of musical maturity when they arranged their live set to be played with a string quintet made up of players from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) curated for Melbourne Music Week.

As a band, Second Hand Heart are a cohesive unit. Tides are a force. Hold your breath. It will draw you in.

Since inception, Melbourne’s Second Hand Heart has worked hard to be everywhere at once. Earning comparisons to Big Scary and Sarah Blasko, critical acclaim has been simmering for the young quintet. It’s to be expected: “the tandem act between the front women works wonderfully, and plays a large part in the band's appeal'' (Faster Louder, AUS) as they create “a somewhat dark, haunting yet at times quite captivating listening experience that grows on you the more you hear” (Maverick Magazine, UK).

Their haunting sound has not only earned an audience, but has rewarded the band with great opportunities, including a show alongside French super-group Nouvelle Vagues’ front woman Nadeah and a ‘Tunesday’ feature in Frankie Magazine. They have performed with Art of Sleeping, Battleships, Ainslie Wills, Saskwatch and established acts Hunting Grounds, Holly Throsby and Kate Miller-Heidke. It’s been a busy few years for the band, a group poised to make a serious impact.

Air Traffic Controller

About: Air Traffic Controller

The 2015 Billboard Hot 100 Fest featured a wide range of pop radio acts, but there were a few bands in the lineup injecting an important element that is considered vital to any music festival - rock and roll.  Air Traffic Controller was one of the lucky bands handpicked to do just that.  After letting a few songs out of the box from their upcoming full length release, Billboard was a perfect setting for ATC to give a very large audience a taste of what's just around the corner.  The band may be a new to the pop scene, but they've come a long way to get to the main-stage.

Serving in the US Navy as a real-life air traffic controller, singer/songwriter Dave Munro sent home demos written and recorded during deployment. With his enlistment up, he returned to his hometown, Boston, and discovered a surprising number of fans and collaborators, prompting the genesis of the aptly-named band.

Nominated for an MTV “Best Break-Out Artist” Video Music Award in late 2009 and winner of "Best Indie Rock Act" of the 2010 Boston Music Conference, Air Traffic Controller and their debut album, "The One", found its way onto many of the Northeast media outlet's Best-Of lists.  During the height of its radio campaign ATC's debut became one of the top three most-added albums on college radio stations nationwide.

In 2012, Air Traffic Controller were ready for round two with their founding producer, LA-based artist William James McAuley, better known as Bleu. Having a home-run success on Kickstarter and raising over $12k to support the production of “NORDO” – the team set out to create a place all their own in the indie pop world.  Taking advantage of band member Steve Scott’s experience composing and conducting, they went the distance and recorded a forty piece orchestra on the song “Blame.” The album also features band member Casey Sullivan singing on two duets “You Know Me” and “Any Way.”  ATC (including female singer-songwriter/bassist Casey Sullivan, lead guitarist/multi-instrumentalist Steve Scott, and Dave's brother, drummer Richie Munro) released the effervescent all-American indie pop record "NORDO", and received many accolades and award nominations such as the “Artist on The Verge” award by NMS. The album's most popular song from “You Know Me” graced the #1 spot on The Hype Machine, was placed on the NPR Hot 100 List for SXSW, was named Best Indie Alternative Song in the Independent Music Awards, and has led the band to over 10 Million plays on Spotify.  The bustling single "Hurry Hurry," also garnered a great deal of attention, as they were named Band Of The Day by the Guardian UK and a Top 5 College Radio act by WERS and MTVU.

In 2015 Air Traffic Controller is touring the US and ready to launch the next studio album with returning producer Bleu, incorporating more duets and solo lead songs with fellow songwriter Casey Sullivan, additional strings by Jeremy Van Cleave, and percussion by Seth Kasper and Adam Salameh. The album reaches into new, often dark, territory but is consistent with the everyman spirit of ATC, featuring new songs “The House,” “People Watching,” and “On The Wire” – all of which have been featured on Spotify’s official New Music Tuesday playlist.

Citing iconic influences like McCartney, Simon, Petty, Springsteen, and Fleetwood Mac, Air Traffic Controller keeps it honest, with autobiographical lyrics and thoughtful storytelling.  "Casey Sullivan comes forward as lead vocalist, adding a dreamy overtone to the band's already exuberant sound" (BuzzBands LA).  On stage, the band is normally a 5-piece band, but they have been accompanied, on numerous occasions, by an entire string section to capture and recreate the sonic landscape of their recordings.  ATC has toured the US and London and since have been asked to perform with acts such Joshua Radin, Kongos, The Lone Bellow, Catfish & The Bottlemen, J. Roddy Watson & The Business, and played festivals like The Nines Fest with Dr. Dog and Delta Spirit, Life Is Good Fest with Dave Matthews, and the Billboard Hot 100 Fest with mega-stars like The Weeknd, and Justin Beiber.

ATC's music has been licensed by Bose, MTV, FOX, NBC, ABC, Disney, Verizon, Toyota, Lincoln/Mercury, Ecko, Hollister, Eddie Bauer, TBS, USA and CW networks.

The Imaginary Suitcase

About: The imaginary suitcase

The imaginary suitcase is the one we carry along throughout our lives, the one that contains our dead or barely breathing illusions and the images of our life as we fantasize it.

The Imaginary Suitcase is also the solo avatar of Laurent Leemans, singer and guitarist in the acoustic folk-rock combo Ceilí Moss since 1996, and before that in La Vierge du Chancelier Rolin in the 90s.

Cracker sang "what the world needs now is another folksinger like I need a hole in my head" and they were not wrong, but in 2010, after 14 years spent in a band of 5 to 8 musicians playing full throttle Poguesey folk-rock, the desire to bring to life songs that didn’t fit in the Ceilí Moss sound got stronger than the fear of becoming the 1001st whining brat who strums two and a half chords and moans his small time existentialism, so that everyone understands what Schopenhauer meant when he wrote that boredom could be a metaphysical experience…

Whereas this project began as a mere recreation, and Laurent expected not much except the selfish satisfaction of seeing some personal songs come to life, The Imaginary Suitcase grew way beyond it's founder's wildest expectations with gigs (awkward at first to find yourself alone on stage when you've always had half a dozen excellent musicians behind your back...), praise and enthusiastic comments from the blogosphere and occasional cooperations with Marc Gunn (of the Brodbingnagian Bards), Jessica Kilroy, Seesayle or Marieke Lightband.

Soulful and ultra melodic songs built round a deep and versatile voice (think of the son Suzanne Vega and Nick Cave would have had) at times caressing, at times ominous, and deceptively simple guitar chords, lightfooted but equivocal. Can you say The Imaginary Suitcase is a sort of Belgian counterpart to The World Of Skin or maybe Joseph Arthur’s evil twin? Why not? And the listener will probably also perceive the influence of The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Smiths, Nick Cave, Rowland S. Howard, 16 Horsepower/Wovenhand, Joy Division, Paul Roland, Brendan Perry, Death In June, Hugo Race, The The or Swans.

In little more than two years, The Imaginary Suitcase has already released four self-produced records: Here’s to those we could not save in march 2012, Putting things on top of other things in february 2013, Full moon fever in september 2013 and the brand new Driftwood in march 2014. Live, Laurent uses different electric or acoustic guitars, an autoharp and some percussion to bring a surprisingly full, varied and generous performance for a guy alone.
