The Minstral Show – (Episode 044)

Hello, and welcome to this week’s episode of the Minstral Show!

More than just a podcast, World United Music has emerged to bring you the best music being made in the 21st century by signed, unsigned and Independent artists…and so, as always, we have another great line up of artists to take us through these darker days into the liberating times to come, featuring: Underlights, David Philips, Parker Bombshell, NOMIA, Coma Recovery, Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys, Drenge, Robert Icaza, Green Day and Michael Mazochi

To all the Artists, be sure to share the podcast episode with your network as it helps bring attention not only to your work but the work of others as well. That's what my music project “World United Music” is all about, bringing attention to all the artists who make great music.

SET: 01

Starting off today’s show is Sydney Australia’s “Underlights” with “Remnants” taken from their 2012 self titled EP “Underlights”. “Remnants” lends the feelings of being in a serene dream state while searching for something elusive. An excellent expression from an excellent EP…yet

Not long after their EP release, the band disappeared from the music radar screen which leaves me dumbfounded as to why because this group should have been on every radio station world wide in my opinion. Maybe we can coax them back, hey, Jack Friels, Johnny Took, Tom O’Dell and Darius Navidzadeh, If you’re out there listening, come on back and do this thing! We need more music like this!

Following Underlights is David Philips with “Nowhere” taken from his latest album “Get Along” digitally released by Black n Tan Records May 7th, 2018. The album is David’s 7th to date which continues the passionately soulful acoustic folk n blues David is known for. It’s the very thing I love about David’s music as he pours his soul into every track to greet us in our solitary confinement with colourful waves of hope through the medicinal properties of the blues…and so his song, “Nowhere” greets us half a mile from nowhere and takes us somewhere meaningful, to process life.

Following David Philips is Parker Bombshell with “Karma” taken from their June 2014 EP “Everyone’s a TV Baby” “Karma” is a new wave synth pop tune with a catchy dance beat that examines the blind alley some of us end up in… in its way, “Karma” helps us to move beyond a depressive state by confronting regrets and replacing them with hope. A unique song in healing ambience and lyric, so hats off to Tom McNeil and Thomas Payne who are Parker Bombshell.

Now, Time comes alive in music to create “Remnants” from “Nowhere” where “Karma” greats us in song…another meaningful set of music on the minstral show.

SET: 02

Our second set of music is very progressive and deals with the dark places we sometimes go to in our minds. …fear not, we will not leave you there

Starting off the second set is Minnianapolis Minnesota band “NOMIA” with “A Windswept Tree” taken from their 2014 Album Iron and Rust. “A Windswept Tree” is a progressive instrumental Rock piece that absorbs the listener into a matrix of complex expressions and thought…in a way the music simulates the mind processing a backlog of life we often put aside for another day…the very reason why Progressive Rock is called the thinking mans music. Truly a must listen for critical thinkers and progressive rock fans.

Next up is Albuquerque New Mexico band “Coma Recovery with “Nox Medicus” or “Night Medicine” from their April 2018 album “Apotheosis” What Coma Recovery delivers is an infectious heavy rock / progressive rock tune with deeply poetic and moving lyrics that reminds of Tears for Fears, only heavier. A great song that cements the songs of this set into a thought filled meaningful expression.

Closing out the set is the Musically sophisticated and immensely talented Boston Art Rock group “Walter Sickert & The Army of Broken Toys” with “Cataclysm” taken from their 2010 album “Steam Ship Killers”. “Cataclysm” is the end…the end of the crisis we must all face if we are to see it through…the perfect climactic end to this powerful set of music.

And so, A Windswept Tree, Night Medicine and A Cataclysm find their way into your thoughts, only on the minstral show.

SET: 03

Defiance and revolution fill the third set on today’s theme of the minstral show…

UK rock group “Drenge” starts the final set with “Side by Side” taken from their 2015 Album “Undertow”

“Side by Side” is a grungy garage punk rock tune that jumps out of the darkest nights with a defiant attitude. One of the very best songs by Drenge.

Following Drenge is Rhode Island Punk Rocker “Robert Icaza” with “Gotta Get Out” taken from his 2018 album “Demo”.

Influenced by the Clash, Bad Religion and the Sex Pistols among others, Robert says what we all feel at times…we gotta get out, gotta get out of here…and then the decision is made…

Following Robert Icaza is Green Day with a live version of “99 Revolutions” from their 2012 album “Tre’”…I say it often and I say it again, “The revolution BEGINS with Music” and what better way to do it than with the rockin defiant attitude of Green Day.

Closing this special 4 song set is “Michael Mazochi with “Put up a Fight” an unreleased song from 2015 that tells us not to give up or give in but to put up a fight against all the lies the establishment rests on…Don’t live a lie, put up a fight…A powerful rock n roll tune who’s voice needs to be heard by all.

Be sure to support the artists by going to their official websites, buying their music and joining their email platforms. Details are in the episode description.

...and so we have seemingly come from a state of Isolation and illusion into a conscious awakening to face our fears and the oblivion that is all around us to then seize the moment through rebellion and revolution and put up a fight…

and now “Catch the Wave” with the music revolution, on the Minstral show. See you next week!

United Music Mag 07 2016

Welcome to the 7th edition of United Music mag! Today’s featured artists are “The Rob Booth Band” from London, UK, “Billy Pettinger” aka “Billy the Kid” from Alabama, “Michael Mazochi” from LA, California, and “Peter Case” from San Francisco.

This week’s new music line-up is filled with Blues, folk, Rock, and everything in between including revolutionary elements that speak to the emotional social settings of our times. So let’s get this music revolution started!

1.

The Rob Booth Band

The Rob Booth Band is from London (UK) (South West - Wimbledon, Croydon, Morden) and was formed out of the famous jams at Ain't Nothing but the Blues bar in Soho. The Band has played together for the past 10 years in the UK & Spain, and will be on the road touring in 2016. Plans also include a studio visit with new material and a possible second album release later this year.

Their debut album, “Can’t Stop” was actually created in 2010 but was released on Bandcamp March 16th, 2016 which gives it the new music status in my books. The album flows with a variety of Americana blues, UK folk / pop influences through its solid mixture of originals and cover songs. The album centers on the insatiable pull of love, the despair of losing it and where it can leave you…’The Cold” is the place.

Have a listen to their smooth jazzy blues hit single “The Cold” and then check out the entire album, “Can’t Stop” below. Be sure to visit “The Rob Booth Band” on Facebook to keep up to date with what they’re up to…and don’t forget to give them the thumbs up.

Band Members:

2.

Billy Pettinger

Hailing from Vancouver BC, Canada, and now living in Alabama, Billy Pettinger aka Billy the Kid has created some of the very best memorable music in Alternative country / Soft Rock that this listener has heard, and I’ve heard a great many songs in my lifetime. Billy’s latest 5 song, almost album, “You Can Have it All” is no exception and contains a hidden diamond with the album’s opening song, “Moving On” which to me contains the sound and atmosphere that drew my attention to her music in the first place.

All 5 songs on “You Can Have it All” hold big potential and will resonate with Americana, soft rock, alt country, folk fans so check out Billy’s new, “almost album” below and then have a listen to “Thoroughfare” from 2014 and “New Orleans Night” from 2012. To me, these songs capture a certain melancholy mood and atmosphere of an age as they reach out through music history like a message in a bottle showing they can withstand the tempestuous seas of time.

Be sure to visit Billy’s social links, check out more of her great music and say hi!

3.

Michael Mazochi

Today’s third artist is Michael Mazochi from Los Angeles, California. Michael weaves his creative spirit and writing abilities across many genres putting life and meaning into all of his music. So today we’ll show you a little bit of Michael’s world as we cover his latest music projects including his folk rock a la Woody Guthrie, “The Cold War Sessions” and the energetic rock n roll of “The Michael Mazochi Band".

Michael Mazochi has been pursuing the evolution of expression for the better part of a decade. His work ranges from folk, to country, to indie rock, to pop, to rock and roll. His more instrumentally dense work with his band is an exploration of pop, psychedelic, garage and good old fashioned rock n' roll while his solo work tends towards the more intimate confessions of a solo artist.

In my opinion, everyone needs a revolution, and mine revolves around music. So when I hear the pains of the world or the call to put up a fight for freedom and justice and what is right, all contained in a song, I’m an instant fan…and so I’m really pleased to feature Michael Mazochi and his music on United Music Mag today…this is what it’s all about!

Michael’s music vibrates on many frequencies with mindful energy and spirit to capture the listener’s heart and soul as you will hear in the music selections below, but don’t take my word for it, go to iTunes to have a listen to his latest album “The Cold War”.

“The Cold War” is a brilliant album that is destined to be one of the albums of the year as it resonates with the life and times we are living in today. ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music

4.

Peter Case

Peter Case’s work sets the bar for authenticity, passion and imagination and spans a number of genres, including folk, blues, and rock. Raised in Buffalo, NY, Case came to the Bay area in 1973 and worked as a street musician and played in the seminal power pop group The Nerves, before moving to Los Angeles to form the Plimsouls, landing a deal with Geffen Records.

The Plimsouls achieved success with the single, "A Million Miles Away,” but broke up shortly after. Case’s 1986 solo Geffen record revealed deep roots in folk and blues, and earned him his first Grammy nomination for the song “Old Blue Car” as well as the Number 1 spot on the NY Time’s 1986 Best CDs list. Six CDs later, Case earned another nomination for Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John, a remarkable collection of songs that features Case’s voice and a single guitar. It’s clear that Case is a major talent on the Americana troubadour landscape.

Case’s 2010 CD, Wig emphasized the rock and blues side of Case’s repertoire, while 2007's Let Us Now Praise Sleepy John demonstrates what Case can do with just his voice and a guitar. With or without a backing band, Case delivers his songs with both intense passion and introspective nuance.

HWY 62 is the latest album by Peter Case released on October 30th, 2015. The album is another masterful offering that easily falls into a plethora of music genres including acoustic folk, blues, Americana, alt country, and the protest categories that will please a great number of music fans. The content of “HWY 62” is filled with memories, hard times and brutal honesty that comes to life with this seasoned folk and blues veteran who delivers a realistic professional air, flair and swagger with his music…and it can be said without hesitation that the music of Peter Case stands on its own with the pulse of the nation playing the chords…

“HWY 62 reaches deep down into the depths of the soul of a nation to mirror the times we live in and it’s delivered by a seasoned veteran, with total class.” ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music

Be sure to check out all of Peter’s music and visit his social pages to catch up with what he’s up to and where he’s touring.

Michael Mazochi

About: Michael Mazochi

Michael Mazochi has been perusing the evolution of expression for the better part of a decade. His work ranges from folk, to country, to... indie rock, to pop, to rock and roll. His more instrumentally dense work with his band "The Von Furs" now called "The Michael Mazochi Band" is an exploration of pop, psychedelic, garage and good old fashioned rock n' roll while his solo work tends towards the more intimate confessions of a solo artist.

The Von Furs began life as a studio project for Michael (past winner of Folk Album of the Year and Folk Singer/Songwriter of the Year at the LA Music Awards). Based in Los Angeles, and following an extensive string of placements on hit t.v. shows like "New Girl", "True Blood", "Hart of Dixie", and "Gossip Girl" along with a spot in a "Coca-Cola" commercial, he decided it was time to put together a band of friends and musicians to play the songs he had been writing and recording. Blending a love for 60's Americana (Bob Dylan, Neil Young), Classic British Pop (The Beatles, The Kinks) and Indie Rock (Pavement, The Walkmen) The Von Furs set out to fill a gap in the fabric of modern indie rock. Building upon time spent in upstate NY and a cabin in the Angeles National Forest while tucked away and working tirelessly, Mazochi blended together his influences to produce something new and timeless.

Michael released "The Von Furs" energy filled alternative rock album "Love and Taxidermy" in 2016.

After a lengthy break from releasing full length albums under his name, Michael Mazochi returns with "The Cold War". The album is a look at the modern age and how it effects us as human beings. The 14 track album is a vibrant, exciting, and sometimes harrowing look at the effects of the times we live in and how we all need to find some sense of peace in the chaos that surrounds us.

"The Cold War" is mostly the work of one music obsessive who locked himself up in a small apartment and tried to make sense of the world around him. The album was made one piece at a time with nearly every instrument being played by Mazochi from drums to vocals. The presence of Maxwell Butler in a good handful of the songs provides a lift whenever and wherever he lends his talents.

"The Cold War" was Mazochi's most concise and directed album, one that seeks to look forward into the future while staying grounded in the past.

Since then Michael has released a folk electronica based album titled "Here Comes the Night" (2017) which is a unique exploration into the electronica / folk universe that clearly shows Michael's diverse skills as an artist as he combines his search for truth and his progressive music talents to produce a very unique album. The album was written, recorded, mixed, produced, and mastered by Michael Mazochi. ~ Favorite track: "Watching the Lines"
