Andy White

About: Andy White

Irish singer-songwriter and author Andy White carries a 12-string guitar under his arm and wears his particular brand of charm on his sleeve, with the political edge of Billy Bragg, the romance of David Gray and the Celtic lyricism of the Waterboys.

Andy is a fully paid up 21st Century Troubadour (and that’s the title of his journal-memoir published by Lagan Press in Ireland and last year’s ‘album of the book’ compilation on his UK label, Floating World).

Belfast born and raised, now living in Melbourne, White has earned a global following for blending folk and pop stylings with a poet’s sensibility. Working with the great names of Irish music - Sinead O’Connor, Donal Lunny, Van Morrison - and writing with the likes of Peter Gabriel and Neil and Tim Finn, Andy has won Ireland’s top songwriting awards and toured the world many times over.

Since his first album Rave On Andy White, recorded in a field in Northern Ireland, Andy has been produced by top producers John Leckie and Kim Fowley, recorded in studios from Real World in the UK to Australia and Canada, along the way writing many songs engrained in his homeland’s psyche – including ‘Religious Persuasion’, ‘James Joyce’s Grave’ and ‘Street Scenes From My Heart’.

Andy’s latest release is his eleventh studio album How Things Are, on release in Europe this February 3. Recorded in The Growlery, Melbourne, with son Sebastian on drums, it’s an intensely personal collection of songs both celebrating and commemorating the end of a beautiful relationship which started around the time his fourth album.

Andy’s work and life have always been interconnected - his autobiography is in his discography, and the latest one is an apotheosis of sorts. He says he wrote the songs in an intense period of reflection, to answer the oft-posed question “How are things?”

Andy’s work as a writer and poet is closely linked to his songwriting output. He’s been described as writing in the tradition of the Spanish troubadour poets and the Beats, yet he retains a strong classical sensibility. Stolen Moments is his most recent volume, published by Brisbane publisher Another Lost Shark Press in 2011.

As a performer, as well as playing solo, Andy has collaborated with like-minded friends, musicians and writers both in the past – ALT with Liam O Maonlai (Hothouse Flowers) and Tim Finn (Crowded House, Split Enz) – and the present – Fearing & White with Canadian singer-songwriter Stephen Fearing.

Andy is a singer-songwriter of and for our times, documenting the world and its current chaos and beauty with remarkable insight. As he says in ‘I Decided To Fly’, wherever he is, with an acoustic guitar in his hand, he’s still “blowing bubbles on the Lisburn Road.”

Keep up with Andy’s world via his website, blog, and Facebook fansite:

Early Rising People

About: Early Rising people (David Tollisen)

Early Rising People is a project by world traveler and Norwegian, David Tollisen. David has spent most of his past 17 years in India and the Philippines studying Yoga and working with children in poverty stricken areas that has given him a different perspective of life.

Music Career

As David puts it “one day I fell down out of a coconut tree”, and started to create music that was both spiritually uplifting and socially conscious based on life experiences and the growing consciousness that has awakened in the world.

Recently, with the help of a few friends, David released an album titled “ PROUT Revolution”. The 14 song project is a spiritual manifesto based on looking at the world as a family which is the meaning behind the title of the album. Quite simply, PROUT is the application of the family spirit to society and economics. It is a very realistic alternative in practice than how the world works right now.

David speaking about his project and belief:

“I would very much like to remind all the conscious musicians and other artists in the whole world about their responsibility towards a PROUT revolution. It is foolish to think that intellectuals and politicians are going to be the driving force behind mobilizing the masses towards a revolutionary change. Responsible artists must unite together through Song and other forms of art which can touch the hearth of the people in a such way that people will rise up against all the exploitations going on in the world”.

"If artists do not show an optimistic vision about a brighter future for all then I do not think our dream will be possible. But consciousness knows that it is possible so the right forces will come together in the right time. The power lays in our dreams and visions, and the food for these dreams is pure art. Art is the essence of creativity which brings hope and beautiful dreams. Theories alone can never do this."

"It was after I came to this realization that my songs become more PROUT revolutionary. So, am I just talking fantasy, or are we going to join together as a uniting force to bring the right people together towards a mass movement? It may sound pompous to use big words like this, but revolution is a word much bigger then most of us can imagine. It is about an all around change of consciousness. The world can really be as beautiful as we dare and care to imagine."

Johnny Duhan

About: Johnny Duhan

Johnny Duhan started his career as a fifteen year old front man with Granny’s Intentions, the most popular beat group in Ireland in the 60s. After rousing Dublin with their soul touch, they moved to London, were signed to the prestigious Deram label, enjoyed considerable success and disbanded before Johnny was twenty one. Johnny started writing folk songs, poetry and prose at this stage. In a career spanning 40 years, his greatest achievement is a quartet of epic albums - Just Another Town, To The Light, The Voyage and Flame - which correspond to the four chapters of his lyrical autobiography, TO THE LIGHT. Johnny’s songs are sung worldwide in a variety of languages, thanks to the focus put on them by Christy Moore, The Dubliners, Mary Black and hosts of other Irish and international singers. His song The Voyage has become a modern classic. Christy Moore has termed Johnny “One of our greatest songwriters.” And the late Ronnie Drew described him as “one of my favourite songwriters.” A new album, The Burning Word, has just been released.

Johnny’s journey is set out in a series of albums that portray his life - his Limerick boyhood in JUST ANOTHER TOWN; his tilt for fame and the girl in TO THE LIGHT; his reflections on family life in THE VOYAGE; and his spiritual quest in FLAME.

“After a number of hard knocks in 2014, I struggled into 2015 with not just a chip on my shoulder but a full beam on my back. One winter morning while carrying this load up an incline in Barna Woods (a place I often stroll through), I found my usual path blocked by a fallen tree, knocked by a storm the night before. Rooted to the spot by the surprise obstacle, I scratched my head glancing around at other smaller trees that had survived the tempest. While making my way around the exposed root structure at the end of the wide trunk I noticed that the bed the tree had grown in was a wide ledge of solid rock, with little or no root room. Examining the roots themselves I saw that the long fibrous tentacles had had to stretch themselves right to the edge of the rock ledge and over it to gain earth support and nourishment to grow. By the great size of the tree, it had been no mean achievement to have flourished and grown for so long. Still thinking of this when I got home from my walk, I jotted an account of my encounter with the tree in my Song Journal, and a few days later a song grew organically from my notes, “The Fallen Tree”. Without strain or effort, other songs started stemming from the same natural source, all related one way or the other to the felled tree, which I began to associate with the proverbial Tree of Life and with my own life history and journey. It took five months to complete the full collection Creation, which I intend releasing as an album in early 2016, to mark the 50th year of my calling in song.  A video of The Fallen Tree made by Tony Walsh & Tocar Media will appear on Youtube prior to the album’s release.  The title song “Creation” will be released as a single on iTunes and other download outlets in September 2015. For further details of the overall work Creation visit my Official website

Johnny lives in Barna, Galway.
