About: The Awkwards

Keith Watson is a singer-songwriter from Aberdeen Scotland better known as “The Awkwards”. Keith plays a variety of music in the folk music soft rock genres.

“I write mostly acoustic-based songs, do all vocals, play all parts, and record in a home studio.”

Life’s experiences have been the main source of inspiration for Keith’s music since his early youth, so it’s a good bet that you’ll find Keith immersed in his music around the Aberdeen night club scene singing and playing acoustic guitar if he’s not at home working in his studio on a new track…and if you tune into BBC Radio Scotland you might also hear a song of his from time to time.

Some of Keith’s favourite bands are the Shangri-Las, the Velvet Underground, Black Sabbath, the Smiths, and Everything but the Girl...you wouldn’t know it by the soft vocals, meaningful lyrics and melodic guitar playing that embodies most of Keith’s music, which seems more in common with the likes of Paul Simon and Jim Croce. Either way, listening to Keith’s music is a pleasure and sure to resonate on an emotional level.

“Without our songs and stories, we are nothing.” S. J. Tucker has been the glad captain of her own independent music career since 2004, when she left the workaday world behind to travel the continent, singing songs and changing lives.  Named a vanguard of the Mythpunk movement and even “the face of neo-tribal Paganism” by Witches & Pagans Magazine, Tucker is the voice of lore at the campfire and the sharp laughter of modern myth. With one hand anchored in her art and the other held out to you, she is songs and stories, community and wit.

With over ten albums released to date and several more currently in the works, Tucker has received songwriting awards and has traveled the United States, Canada, and Europe with her music.  S. J. (called “Sooj” by fans and friends) believes that there’s more than one way to be a rock star. If you’re chasing your dreams and living your life in a way that keeps you happy and healthy, Sooj believes you’ve got it made.  You may often find her on tour with similarly hard-working artists and groups who believe in giving their fans all that they’ve got, such as Toronto’s Heather Dale Band, Seattle cellist Betsy Tinney (often with their shared project, Tricky Pixie), or Pride rockers Big Bad Gina.

With a style of guitar playing so unique to his genre, you’d almost think Oxford based singer- songwriter Charlie Cunningham has transported you to a small village in the likes of Spain. Cunningham is a fresh talent, proving to be more than just a man with a guitar and a voice; a regularity that we have become all too familiar with. His new and ambitious EP Outside Things combines beautiful, yet honest song-writing with such percussive guitar playing that he truly stands out from the crowd.

Title track “Outside Things’” premièred on Best Fit back in September 2014; the lyrics are from the perspective of a newly born baby. It’s a time that occurs in everyone’s life that cannot be remembered or recalled, this therefore, explorative aspect to his song-writing shows the depth Charlie Cunningham has to offer, unlike so many artists of his type. The song manages to convey an impression of diving in and out from the confusion of that foreign experience in such a compelling nature, accompanied by intense vocals playing on the track’s intimacy. “Outside Things’” carries with it a strange sense of longing, which is continuous throughout the EP.

“In One Out” is the first track to be heard on the record; it’s melodic, but profoundly sombre and relatively dark sounding. The finger-picked guitar behind the vocals is hypnotic. There’s a slight step away from this intensity of the opening track and that of the title track in “Lights Off” and “Plans” - the second and fourth tracks on the EP. With far less movement there’s time to breathe between songs, it really helps to make each one stand out in their own right. During both of these tracks Cunningham creates moments of silence, with constant breaks where everything comes to a brief halt – if you heard these tracks live you’d want to be situated in an intimate and silent setting.

The Outside Things EP not only demonstrates Charlie’s impeccable writing ability, but his intricate and skilful playing technique, developed and picked up from his time spent in Seville, along with showing off his individual voice. Through the EP, Cunningham’s percussive yet flexible guitar playing technique is something to be wholeheartedly admired. I think there’s a very clear and strong coherency to Outside Things, and it certainly shows real promise for what we can expect from Charlie Cunningham in the future as he continues to move forward as an engaging singer-songwriter.

Anilah is the solo project from vocalist and composer Dréa Drury, a musician based in the Selkirk Mountains of Western Canada. She combines the shamanic and esoteric with modern elements, weaving a soundscape that is ethereal and yet solid with rhythmic pulse. For fans of Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Wardruna, and Tool.

The music of Anilah is born from a practice that is deeply inspired by nature and a willingness to engage with the natural world within a framework of reciprocity. In this way, artistic expression becomes a symbiotic relationship with the elements. All of the music is composed in nature, while walking or in meditation. An unspoken conversation occurs which influences the composition, and by entering into this state, I find myself listening to melodic structures that are inherent within all of nature. There is a widening of the senses, and an unraveling of conceptual boundaries. My art and music are continuously influenced by these practices which cultivate benevolence, compassion, and gratitude.

Pronounced "Doe-Gone, The Dogon Lights  "Afro- galactic groove magma" from the Bay Area.   The Dogon Lights create a shamanic and energetic dance atmosphere that takes the listener straight to the stars.  Traditional skin and wood instruments are blended with electro hip hop beats and Jimi Hendrix inspired guitar with vocals in Spanish and African languages.

The Dogon Lights combine a blend of styles that is fresh and instantly recognizable. A blend of languages (Spanish, English, French, Wolof, Bambara etc) and instruments such as the Sintir and Guimbri from Morocco, the Kamale Ngoni, (similar to the Kora) from Mali and Burkina Faso, Calabash and Djembe of West Africa, with Electric Bass, Guitar, Synthesizer and Drums.  The word, "Dogon" comes from the Dogon people of Mali who believe they are from "the dog star" or Sirius.  The Dogon Lights have opened up for grammy winning artists Tinariwen from Mali as well as Bombino from Niger. Members have Performed with Bassnectar, Beats Antique, Rising Appalachia, The Mickey Hart Band, Hamsa Lila, Dirtwire and many others.

Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, “Has a Shadow” are a progressive psychedelic band that take you on a musical trip away from reality into an alternative state of mind. Their debut album “Sky is Hell Black” was released on November 12^th, 2013 on Captcha Records to rave reviews by the alternative music industry and fans alike.

“Sky is Hell Black” hits you with a wall of sound that emanates from the darkest corners of the Mexican interior. Listening to this album is like being shrouded in a veil of fog at the moment a massive storm takes over a barren metropolis. The experience of drone gets charged with anticipation when you realize that the storm is about to hit.

The album was recorded through the winter of 2012 in Mexico City, in a house where Remi used to live as a child. Alberto Gonzalez (Beto or “The Obsolete” from Mexican psych duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete) was responsible for recording and mixing. The band then completed their first tour of the US west coast and will do so again in 2014.

Victor “Remi” Garay plays the bass, Rodolfo Samperio plays guitar, and Daniel Garciano plays guitar and electric organ in addition to providing the vocals. The Obsolete plays drums for the album and contributed guitar tracks to some of the songs.

They have hooked up with Captcha Records, “one of the finest experimental / psych labels around” according to Weed Temple. Captcha has brought you the debut records of Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, onYou, GA’AN, and Dreamsalon in addition to working with Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Phil Cohran and Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Alexi Murdoch's second recording, Towards the Sun, follows his 2006 breakout indie release, Time Without Consequence. Murdoch's debut cemented him as a Top Ten Artist to Watch in Rolling Stone, gained him five stars from Alternative Press, and was hailed as "a timeless record that's likely to endure" by NPR Music. Fiercely independent, and supported by a word of mouth groundswell, Murdoch chose to self-release Time Without Consequence. It has to date sold over 100,000 copies -- and continues to sell briskly almost a half decade after initial release.

Though his second record has had a long gestation, Murdoch's reputation as a serious musical force has been growing apace. With no marketing and little fanfare, his debut quietly became one of the most licensed albums of the decade, receiving placements in countless films and television shows, making Murdoch one of those rare artists who is known primarily for how his music actually sounds. (He has also made multiple appearances on prominent radio outlets like KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, WXPN's World Café, WNYC's Soundcheck, Minnesota Public Radio's The Current, and Seattle's KEXP.) Most recently Murdoch was tabbed by director Sam Mendes to helm the soundtrack for the acclaimed 2009 indie film Away We Go, contributing nine songs alongside songs by the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, George Harrison & the Stranglers.

Murdoch tape-recorded the majority of Towards the Sun in Vancouver in a single night while on tour in North America in 2009. Revisiting the tape months later in a basement studio in Brooklyn the arrangements were kept poignantly spare; calling on a small handful of local musicians, the record was finished in a few days. The result is a compellingly stark and raw document of quiet, visceral folk songs that are at once dark and immediate.

Following the release and sell-out launch of band’s first EP in 2011, Second Hand Heart tested the waters recording catchy alt-pop song ‘Trouble’, in a makeshift studio in Balwyn in 2012. “Our perspective changed over time… in the beginning we started to mix with crisp and polished production in mind. As we got deeper into the recording process, we realised that we wanted to capture the feeling with all it’s organic faults and flaws” says guitarist John Waller.

Tides fuses intricate instrumentation with splashes of delay and washes of cymbals. In 2013 Second Hand Heart reached a new level of musical maturity when they arranged their live set to be played with a string quintet made up of players from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) curated for Melbourne Music Week.

As a band, Second Hand Heart are a cohesive unit. Tides are a force. Hold your breath. It will draw you in.

Since inception, Melbourne’s Second Hand Heart has worked hard to be everywhere at once. Earning comparisons to Big Scary and Sarah Blasko, critical acclaim has been simmering for the young quintet. It’s to be expected: “the tandem act between the front women works wonderfully, and plays a large part in the band's appeal'' (Faster Louder, AUS) as they create “a somewhat dark, haunting yet at times quite captivating listening experience that grows on you the more you hear” (Maverick Magazine, UK).

Their haunting sound has not only earned an audience, but has rewarded the band with great opportunities, including a show alongside French super-group Nouvelle Vagues’ front woman Nadeah and a ‘Tunesday’ feature in Frankie Magazine. They have performed with Art of Sleeping, Battleships, Ainslie Wills, Saskwatch and established acts Hunting Grounds, Holly Throsby and Kate Miller-Heidke. It’s been a busy few years for the band, a group poised to make a serious impact.
