Secret Colours revel in being the bastard seed of the '60s
psychedelia and '90s Britpop bloodlines. Since their eponymous debut in 2010,
the band moved swiftly from neophyte in the Chicago psychedelic-newgaze scene
to crusader over the course of unforgettable performances at Austin Psych Fest
and Levitation in 2012. Appearances with Night Beats, Ringo Deathstarr,
Elephant Stone, Spindrift, Asteroid #4, and The Warlocks, have continued to
keep Secret Colours in the hearts and minds of their Chicago faithful, but all
the while, they've been hard at work with producer Brian Deck (Modest Mouse,
Gomez, Sage Francis, Iron & Wine) sharpening the edges of their
polychromatic sophomore album, Peach.
The songs from the sleeker collective of Tommy Evans, Dave
Stach, Justin Frederick, and Eric Hehr are definitively next level, but are
still drenched in the sound that will help you to turn on, tune in, and drop
out.
Secret Colours released their latest LP “Positive
Distractions Part 1” on Feb 4th, 2014.
Singer, songwriter, and guitarist
Wayne Reynolds doesn’t want to be fenced in. From the beginning of his musical
life all the way up to the present moment, he has consistently avoided
kowtowing to any brand of musical dogma. “I’m reminded,” muses Reynolds, “of
the exhortation by none other than Bobby McFerrin that we should not live in
the same musical room all the time. Walk around, don't get stuck.”
It should be no surprise, then,
that when it comes to musical breeds, Reynolds is a bit of a mongrel, and proud
of it. His album, Another Day Goes By, contains elements of folk, pop, jazz,
classical, bossa nova, and more, all filtered through the singular sensibility
that’s unique to the man steering the songs.
Despite the easygoing,
understated tone of many of the tracks on Another Day Goes By, and the earthy,
organic feel of the production, Reynolds comes from a family with close
connections to the classical tradition. Not only was his great-grandfather
William Burnet Tuthill the acclaimed architect behind the creation of Carnegie
Hall and a gifted musician to boot, Reynolds’ grandfather and parents were also
classically trained players. Much to his parents’ dismay, their guitar-playing
offspring ended up playing in several rock bands as a teenager in Memphis.
Though nobody knew it at the time, the last of these, The Jokers, would have a
close tie to rock & roll history. “This band played a lot in clubs and
shows in the area and had several members that became part of The Box Tops,”
remembers Reynolds. “I was only 15, several years younger than the others, and
when they quit school to play with [Box Tops singer/future Big Star frontman]
Alex Chilton and the others, I declined, or really, was denied by my parents,
as you can imagine.”
There may be an alternate
universe where Reynolds stayed the course with his Memphis bandmates and ended
up as part of the group that we know for scaling the late-‘60s charts with “The
Letter” and “Cry Like a Baby.” But in our reality, true to his lifelong
eclectic nature, he investigated other musical areas instead. Reynolds then met
classical guitar legend Christopher Parkening, who was just a young man himself
at the time, and was impressed enough to begin a serious study of guitar
technique. “Through high school and college I kept at it and eventually went to
music school on a scholarship to study with the great Cuban guitarist, Juan
Mercadal,” recalls Reynolds of his artistic evolution.
Though Reynolds became well
versed in classical guitar, he recalls, “I was always arranging some pop
standards to play for pure fun.” By the time he became a part of the music
faculty at the University of Memphis, Reynolds was moving into still more new
territory, crafting soundtrack music for public television programs. But all
the while, there was yet another place Reynolds’ constantly shifting muse was
gradually leading him, towards the creation of Another Day Goes By.
“Over a few years I had written a
group of songs that I was playing for friends,” explains Reynolds. “They were
very impressed by the different quality they heard in the tunes and insisted
that I do something about recording them.” The musical mélange that Reynolds’
friends heard, in advance of the public at large, was partly the product of his
idiosyncratic influences (everything from bossa nova masters Baden Powell and
Joao Gilberto to pop tunesmiths Jimmy Webb and Billy Joel) and partly his own
set of musical fingerprints.
“We eventually went to work
getting the songs arranged and recorded,” says Reynolds of the production
process for Another Day Goes By. “We developed the arrangements more or less in
real time with the rhythm section, and then multiple overdubs for the soprano
sax, background singers, and the rest.” Though the record has a rich, full
sound and finds Reynolds supported by a full band of obviously empathetic
players, the arrangements are acoustic-oriented and the album retains a light,
airy feel. There’s breathing space between the instruments, a natural-sounding
vibe that’s sonically succinct but still feels somehow spontaneous.
The fluid finger-picking acoustic
guitar patterns that drive the opening track, the romance-filled “All I’ll Ever
Need,” give an indication right off the bat that Reynolds knows his way around
a fretboard but isn’t one for hitting listeners over the head with ostentatious
licks. At the same time, the seemingly classical-inspired guitar lines that
light up “A Little Gray” could only come from the hands of someone with a
lifetime of technique at their command. The combination of jazzy, minor-key
moves and Reynolds’ warm, deep vocal tones on the album’s closing cut, “If You
Walked Into My Life,” hark back to an era when it was still possible to turn on
a Top 40 station and hear an accessible-but-sophisticated ballad like George
Benson’s “This Masquerade.” And from the welcoming, James Taylor-like folk-pop
feel of “Focus on the Love” to the plangent electric guitar coloring and
insistent rhythm of “How to Be Me,” Another Day Goes By adheres to the
open-ended artistic ethos that has sustained Reynolds since the beginning of
his musical journey. When he says, “I want to have as broad and complete an
offering as I can. I am challenged by all musical idioms and admire those
artists who play lots of styles very well,” even a casual listen to this album
proves that he takes those sentiments to heart.
Ursina is a
singer songwriter born and raised in a small village high up in the swiss
mountains. Very early on Ursina felt the urge to express herself through music
through the classic music she experienced in her early life at home and later
through her study of Jazz music.
Pop music has
always been a strong influence in Ursina’s life, especially through bands from
scandinavia. The Scandinavian music captured her attention so much that she
packed her bag and travelled to copenhagen in 2010, where she played music and
wrote new songs. The results brought forth her first EP called “LONTAN”, which
was recorded with her swiss/danish band “URSINA'S DANISH LABORATORY” and
released in january 2012. This collaboration and experiment soon came to an end
when ursina returned to switzerland.
Never one to sit
still, Ursina soon began writing new music and released her second EP titled
“TIME IS A THIEF”. The EP was released April 25th, 2013 on Bancamp.
Ursina released a
new EP on Januaury 31st, 2014 titled “Hiding Behind a Mask”.
John Deck has been writing music for much of his life but
never performed publicly or made his music generally accessible. Aside from
collaborations on which he has worked with teachers for performance by children
in schools, his music has not seen the light of day.
John Deck tells stories in his music and the songs reflect both recent and past
experiences in his life. His preference is to write songs for other performers
although the most important thing for him is that people enjoy his music.
After much cajoling by people close to him, he has been persuaded to put his
music into the public eye. This album, titled “Part of Me” to reflect one of
the songs and the important part music has played in his life, is the end
product.
The album would not have been possible without immense help from Rob Aubrey,
recording engineer and owner of Aubitt Studios in Southampton, and Steve
Thorne, a Southampton-based singer/songwriter, who, in addition to playing a
leading part in the arrangement of the music on the album, features in most of
the songs. Marlene Hill, a singer/performer from Portsmouth, has also been a
star in lending her wonderful voice to two of the tracks. In addition, thanks
are due to Tim Payne for his acoustic guitar work on tracks 2 and 4.
Entirely self-funded, this album may turn out to be the only one John Deck ever
makes. That will depend on public reaction to it and you are invited to let him
know what you think.
Mugstar are an English rock and progressive rock
band, influenced by kraut/psych/space/noise rock such as Oneida, Sonic Youth,
Neu! and Hawkwind. Since 2003 they have issued several full length albums, a
split release with Mudhoney and an etched 10”. Mugstar recorded the last-ever
Peel Session with the late John Peel.
Mugstar formed in Liverpool. Their first single,
"Spotlight Over Memphis", drew attention from John Peel, who played
the 7" on his radio show. It was after the next 7", "Flavin'
Hotrod", that Peel offered the band a Peel Session. A split 7" with
Hunting Lodge followed. A mini-album on Kabukikore Records, "Dark
Matter", come next, closely followed by a session for BBC Radio One's Huw
Stephens. In January 2006 the band released "My Baby Skull Has Not Yet
Flowered".
The band's self-titled debut
album was released on CD at the end of 2006 on Sea Records, and on Critical
MASS Records on a limited run of heavy weight vinyl in 2007. Mugstar then
started a productive relationship with Ireland based Trensmat Records with run
of limited 7" singles. One of these releases was a split 7" with
Seattle's Mudhoney, with both bands doing covers of Hawkwind songs. During this
time Red Panda and Mugstar featured on a one-sided 10" single, each
performing half of "Tamlin", a song made famous by Fairport
Convention.
Mugstar signed to Important
Records, who then released "...Sun, Broken..." in March 2010. Their
third album, "Lime", was released in November 2010. For Record Store
Day 2011 Mugstar contribute a cover of "I Got the Six" by ZZ Top for
"I'm So Agitated", a 12" also featuring Carlton Melton, The
Heads and Kool Aid, on Agitated Records. "Lime" and "...Sun,
Broken..." have both been released through Agitated Records on vinyl in
September 2011. These were followed by a split album on Rocket Recordings with
New York's Oneida - called "Collisions 2" - and a 40 remix of
"Serra" (from "Lime") by Loop's Robert Hampson.
The band's fifth album,
"Axis", came out in late 2012.
In April 2013 they performed a
radio session for Marc Riley on his BBC 6 Music evening show.
Mugstar are currently signed to
Important Records in the US and to Agitated Records in the UK.

Kungens Man are a Progressive, Psychedelic, Trans-rock band from Stockholm Sweden. The number of members vary, but the core of the band is four men in their forties who already paid their debts to society.
Kungens Män is a cosmic music organism transmitting from Stockholm, Tellus.
Wooden soundscapes found in comet dust. Warped human brain waves due to heavy use of electricity. Always battling for peace, deconstruction and paradox.
The current form first appeared on Earth in 2012.
Kungens Män creates psychedelic improvisation within the elements of progressive rock / shoegaze, and free jazz. Some of their inspiration comes from tradition Swedish improv rock such as Träd, Gräs och Stenar, International Harvester, Pärson Sound etc.
Kungens Män is a vehicle for transportation. It is the elevator, the wave, the train of association. The hang out in the pool of noise.
It is the expression of un-responsibility. Kungens Män will always do the wrong thing, play the wrong note, wrong the wrong, wrong. Have no fear, Kungens Man is here!
Well, I’m
an independent electronic musician. I pretty much make everything from dubstep
to alternative, metal to orchestral. I specialize in vocal songs, which usually
take elements from alternative rock and modern electronica. I prefer to cover
and combine a wide range of genres instead of fitting into just one. Why settle
for one when you can have them all?
I began my
musical journey at the age of 4, when I began playing the violin. I played it
for 8 years before quitting and moving on to other things. I figured that
playing the violin would never get me anywhere in life, but I now realize that
it had grown my skills in music theory, as well as teaching me to read music.
I picked up
the guitar shortly after quitting violin, and instead of taking lessons I
taught myself. Instead of going the typical route of learning chords and such,
I just played around with solos and learned to play songs by ear.
In early
2011, I took my first step in music production; I began using a DAW. Garageband
was my first one, and it taught me all the basics. I played around with
everything I could and pumped out a couple absolutely horrible songs. After
months of fiddling with Garageband, I chose to move to a more pro-level DAW.
Fruity Loops was my first choice, and I quickly learned that I wasn’t ready for
such a big switch. Having no idea what I was doing was a good thing, though… It
allowed me to learn quickly by trial and error. I played around with it for a
couple months, and I ended up working on what became my debut album, Reflections
of a Dream.
And then… Ponies.
If you’ve
never heard of bronies, let me explain them to you. They’re teenage/adult men
and women who watch My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic. Simple as that. It may sound odd,
but the fantastic production and clever writing of the show caught my eye from
the start. In October of 2011, I became a brony. I was a bit ashamed of it at
first, but I quickly grew out of that.
Right
before the release of Reflections of a Dream in December, I asked The Living
Tombstone if he would remix one of the tracks. To my surprise, he agreed. I had
been listening to his music since I became a brony, so it was an honor for me
to have him remix one of my tracks. After he finished the remix, it began a
flood of his fans to my YouTube channel. This was the beginning of my “fan
base”, and the fact that it was 99% bronies encouraged me to start making brony
music myself.
And I did.
I made
brony song after brony song. To this date I make several brony songs a month,
along with an occasional non-pony song. I continue to work towards a
professional career as a musician, with the hopes of one day being able to make
a living making music like I do now.
I’m
currently working on my third full-length album titled “From All Sides”, and
later plan to continue making brony-themed works under the name “The Sharded”,
a duo project with fellow brony artist Bronyfied.
