CHICO - Split EP Review (2017)

Welcome! Today’s offering in “What’s New in Music” is a four-piece psychedelic garage band out of Nashville Tennessee called “CHICO”.

“CHICO” just released a two song “split EP” with the progressive rock band called “Phobos” on July 28^th, 2017 that should wake a few ears by its outstanding creativeness. The music certainly deserves a closer look / listen by music fans and radio DJ’s, and so, here it is, under the World United Music spotlight on “What’s New in Music”.

CHICO’s 2 song “Split EP”

The opening song, “Twilight Ravine” is a real trip of a tune that comes out of nowhere to pick up your rock sensors with its driving beat, guitar rhythms and refreshing leads. One listen wont be enough as the song picks up your consciousness and merges your being with music euphoria through its subtle psychedelic changes that will have your mind speeding down roads, surfing the waves and travelling through space. “Twilight Ravine” is food for the mindful music starved and an excellent song that should jump start the band out of the gates to a wider audience. “Twilight Ravine” is certainly on this DJ’s playlist!

The second song, “Prayers for the family” is a unique tune that demonstrates the bands mastery of its garage rock roots. The song combines its signature garage sound with a seemingly slowed down punk rock beat as a carrier that borders on Pop but changes with a twist of psychedelic fusion to round out this excellent song and “Split EP”.  

I have “Twilight Ravine” and “Prayers for the Family” already mixed and playing on my car’s CD player…ok, so I have an old car but I love the music blasting from its speakers. 😉

Psychedelic pop. Blistering garage rock. Fuzzed-out shoegaze. Free-formed throwback jams. With their amps cranked high and their voices doused in reverb, Avers brew up their own kind of spacey swirl. It's a sound that keeps one foot in the past and the other in the present, like some kind of 1960s time capsule unearthed by a group of 21st century indie kids.

And it sort of happened by accident.

On a summer night in 2013, two Richmond based musicians got together to talk shop and geek out over psychedelic records. It went well. The next time, they brought along some additional friends. Before long, a proper six-piece had formed, with The Head and the Heart's Tyler Williams on drums and some of the city's best frontmen including James Mason (the Mason Brothers), James Lloyd Hodges (Farm Vegas), Alexandra Spalding (Hypercolor), Adrian Olsen (Hypercolor), and Charlie Glenn (the Trillions) swapping their way between bass, guitar and keyboard duties. Everybody sang, adding harmonies and background vocals to the band's noisy sweep.

In just over a week, ten songs were written. The music was ethereal and expansive, with electric guitar riffs that sprawled skyward into the ether and deep-seated percussion that brought everything crashing back to earth. Avers recorded everything as they went along, setting up shop at Olsen's own studio, Montrose Recording. Located on an historic Richmond plantation and featuring some of the same vintage equipment used by hometown heroes like Sparklehorse and Brian Harvey, Montrose became the band's official home base, a place where new sounds could be coaxed out of old instruments.

Tracked live and produced by the bandmates themselves, Empty Light is a tribute to chance encounters and shared goals. It's the sound of a young band coming together, blending a plurality of influences the epic sweep of Spiritualized, the guitar-fueled freakouts of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, the cultish crunch of Brian Jonestown Massacre into something singular. It's a record that invites you to turn on and tune in... but it won't let you drop out. Empty Light is too rousing for that. ~ Andrew Leahey

Sea Pinks is an alternative rock band from Belfast inspired by sea glass, bleached grass and ghost guitars. Their Indie / garage Pop / Psychedelic 60’s sounds have evolved over the last four years as their 4^th album, “Dreaming Tracks” will attest to. "I haven't forgotten my love for garage rock in my latest renewed fervor for post-rock. Doubt most anything could diminish it, and just to reinforce that sentiment I'm sharing one of the best garage rock albums we've been sent in months. The Gorlons hail from Springfield, MO and they've got a brings me straight back to the days before I even wrote this blog and was a dumb kid looking through the CDs at the public library trying to find anything and everything lo-fi. It shares many of my favorite qualities of the Hentchmen or the long-ago-posted Different Skeletons, as in from the simplicity of the music that can make something incredibly full and dynamic through fuzzy guitar, organs and singing that I find just inside the realm of intelligible without going overboard like modern radio hits. The band, as garage goes, has a heavy retro streak in it as it does remind me of earlier revival bands a remarkable catchiness like The Flamin' Groovies, but of course louder and speedier. I'd say this is produced with a skill that exceeds either of those groups, as least as for a debut when it comes to the Hentchmen. A most excellent driving around album, and in particular I find makes a band much more enjoyable to re-listen to, even more so if heard while you slide your old Caprice around on black ice driving to work at 3:30am like I did. I really must recommend "Rollercoaster" and "Dirty" as two of the neatest songs I have had the pleasure to review on here for a bit, yet the whole album is solid. They've posted the album for free listening on youtube, but should you like to support them and own a copy they're selling it on bandcamp." - Spacerockmountain

"These dudes can write a little something called SONGS. It’s evident from their self-titled debut. Clocking in at just under 35 minutes, it’s not much of a mystery that these dudes don’t do “slow” too often. The album is made up of attitude-heavy riffs, head-nodding beats, and fuzzed tones, all while laced with a decent coat of psychedelic organ melodies. Shake all that up and throw it in the same room and I’d imagine that the inevitable explosion would result in the Gorlons. That’s not to say that they don’t do slow songs too though; the third track “Head Cage” sounds like audio codeine and just like regular codeine, it fucking rules.The whole thing is available on the band’s bandcamp right now. You can give it a listen, download it, or pick up a CD/cassette below. Have at it, kids.

Raise Hell Over the Summer is the solo efforts of Curtis Williams. After “The Sugar Report” disbanded, Curtis decided to write and record one song a week for a year. Named appropriately “52's” can be heard on his Curtis Williams blogspot page and also his YouTube channel where the songs are archived. (Links Below)

Curtis released a 6 song EP "Twin Canals", in September 2012 and then a year later in November 2013, released his second 6 song EP “Mechanized Electronic Joy”. The influences of  Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Smashing Pumpkins, amongst others are heard in his music, but more importantly, we have another emerging creative artist in this music revolution. Curtis is also a designer and illustrator living in New York City.

“Ever since I can remember I've drawn and created art. I have an affinity towards music and film, which tends to come through in my work. Throughout the years of touring and playing bands myself, I developed a passion for design by creating flyers, fanzines, websites, and record covers. Some of my biggest influences are horror movie posters, Art Deco, and punk LP's from the 80's & 90's. I love working with others and helping make their ideas blossom, which I think is one of the most rewarding experiences a person can have. I'm currently designing for lilHub.com and The Vendy Awards but I'm always open to new projects, artistic challenges, and collaborations... so feel free to contact me.”

Black Lizard

To some the band sound a bit like a modern version of neo-psychedelic classics such as Brian Jonestown Massacre, Spacemen 3 or BRMC. In the last couple of years Black Lizard have played a plethora of diverse live shows, during which they’ve managed to create their own distorted signature sound. Black Lizard released their debut EP in September 2012.

Black Lizard‘s self titled debut album was released on the 5th April 2013 (on cd, vinyl & digital) via Soliti. Recording sessions had taken place between Helsinki and Berlin with the participation of amongst others, Anton Newcombe, Black Lizard‘s debut has got us very excited. To add the required final piece of the puzzle the self-produced album was mastered by Sonic Boom at New Atlantis Studios.

Black Lizard return with the Burning EP, the follow up to their much praised self titled debut album. Black Lizard still thrill with their psych rock approach, but the Burning EP brings in more prominent electronic elements and disguised voices. Once again Sonic Boom (Spacemen 3) has mastered this new Black Lizard release, with production duties handled by the band themselves. The Burning EP provides a handy stop-gap between albums with Black Lizard’s second full length album due early 2014.

Title track Burning precedes the EP on the 4th August, featuring a yellow coloured themed video from Finnish photographer Katariina Salmi. What was that about yellow being the color of madness?

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania guitarist/producer/record company head Gregg Kostelich is the frenetic force behind THE CYNICS. He managed to keep the band afloat in the wake of constant personnel changes, he recorded some of the finest garage tracks ever, and also launched one of the best independent record labels of the 1980s. THE CYNICS’ style has been clear since their 1983 inception: fuzzed ultra-distorted guitar, screaming, moaning vocals, with a straight-ahead no frills rhythm section. The influences are extreme ‘60s Punk, R&B, and other loud, frantic trash. Gregg has occasionally steered the band into flirtations with folk-rock and little pop, but it’s the grunged-out punkers that have created THE CYNICS’ reputation. Their first two 45s were released by the Californian Dionysus label, but soon after Gregg had established his own Pittsburgh-based GET HIP RECORDS. This new indy label would release all of THE CYNICS subsequent discs, as well as those by several dozen other cool groups around the globe.

Though Gregg’s guitar is the backbone of the band, vocalist Michael Kastelic’s contribution to THE CYNICS sound cannot be underestimated. In concert (and on record) he screeches, wails, and moans with great abandon, while his frail, thin body shakes throughout the room. Michael is a truly possessed frontman. On and off bassist Steve Magee should also be noted for his fine artwork for both THE CYNICS and many of the GET HIP releases. The initial line-up featured the talents and 60’s looks of keyboard player Becky Smith. After she left the band in the late 80’s they stayed with the simple but strong guitar/singer/bass/drums that they currently display

The CYNICS are the most respected garage outfit around today. Their Live Shows are Legendary. Their body of Recorded Work displays a rich, diverse, history of Original Timeless Tunes and Original Rock and Roll Classics.

Edmonton based traditional rock & roll machine 'The Fuzz Kings' have been turning heads & maintaining the attention and respect of Western Canada's Live Music Community since their inception in mid-2012.

That's really not that long ago - but for Edmonton music mainstays 'Fat Dave' Johnston, Tom Kerr, Nathan Oullette, and Alex Thurgood, it's been a long time coming, and a very successful first year as a group.

The debut vinyl/digital E.P. release "Accentuate Everything" has been very successful and has propelled The Fuzz Kings into a level of respect and notoriety that would typically take a band a lot longer than a year to achieve. Having shared stages with such highly regarded song writers and lyricists as Corb Lund, Jr. Gone Wild, Carolyn Mark, Ann Vriend, and Luther Wright, and with their latest recording endeavor (Full-length album to be released in early 2014) featuring collaborations with the likes of Colleen Brown and Alice Kos - The Fuzz Kings are very quickly being counted among the top musical acts in the area.

Touring has also been successful for this quartet. Western Canada has embraced and honored 'The Fuzz Kings' more quickly than the band had anticipated, and from the seedy bars to the wide-open outdoor festival settings have all been very special to 'The Fuzz Kings' - so what's next? More... Bigger... Better…

2014 will see the release of a new full-length recording entitled "ReTurn Of The Century" as well as tour dates in Canada, Europe, and parts of the U.S.A. where the gospel of this very prairie-oriented, Edmonton-proud, twangy-blues rock & roll band can be spread further and wider than before.

About: Corners

Corners is a garage, post punk, surf band from California USA.

Corners started with Tracy Bryant, who was inspired to write the song “Beyond Way” using a 4 track cassette while listening to White Fence, The seeds, and VU. Rick Mabery recorded some of the drums at his studio after hearing the song and joined the band to play Corners first show via KXLU in Echo Park. Robert Cifuentes AKa Billy Changer recorded the performance live at the radio station and loved what he heard. He joined the band not long after.

Corners soon found them selves playing at a California Club called “The Smell” and became a regular act there. After a year of heavy schedules “Corners” released “My Baby” a 7" EP with Lolipop Records and soon followed that up with “Pressure” a 7" EP release with Mono Records.

The differing styles of the band members have meshed very well together combining Surf, Punk, Post Punk, garage rock, and 80’s New Wave into their own blend of Neo Psychedelia that is resonating with music fans up and down the California coast.

Corners is currently working on new material that is influenced by Rikk Agnew, The Cure, Cleaners from Venus, Broadcast, Hawkwind and the Lolipop bands and hope to tour Nationally in the summer of 2014.
