The Minstral Show – (Episode 082)

Welcome to the Minstral Show, the podcast that spotlights the very best music from around the world, made exclusively in the 21st century.

Every year has its character, and that character or ambiance, is defined by its music. Within the ambiance of a year are all its memories and events that we experience, and so when we listen to a familiar song made a decade or more ago, the music brings back the memories and experiences we had of those times…like a tap into the past…all the details from those moments come back as if stepping into a time machine.

The memories generated by music are so powerful, that they can penetrate through the void of Alzheimers to bring back memories once thought lost. A true story and experience I had with my mother in her final years with Alzheimers. That’s why I believe new music is important for everyone, because its important to remember the times we live in…and if you’re a person who loves the spectrum of rock then this program is certainly for you.

As always, we have an excellent line up of music to help process the emotions and current times we live in… from Pop to Rock, folk to Prog, New Wave to Psyche, "The Minstral Show" carries the waves of the future and past by signed, unsigned and independent artists.

And so, today we have New music by The Hanging Stars, Michael on Fire, Pia Fraus, James Parker, and a song co written by David Philips, Luc Suarez and Javier Bayon for a new Spanish romantic comedy called "Te Quiero, Imbécil"

Also included on todays program are great tunes by Adam Evolving, David Bowie, Cale Parks, Night Beds, Constant Smiles, SJ Tucker with a 2020 version of her song 1157 and a colab by Sonic Elements Dave Kerzner, John Wesley, Billy Sherwood, Randy Mcstine and Neil Peart with their 2012 cover of Rush tune, “Limelight”.

The Minstral Show – (Episode 046)

Today’s episode takes us on a journey of awakening through songs that express the walls and battles we all have to overcome either by ourselves or collectively as a community. The road of life brings with it many hurdles, battles and lessons that eventually lead to an awakening and vision for creating a better world, featuring music by, Chastity Brown, Eric Burdon, Michael on Fire, Burlap to Cashmere, Chris de Burgh, Steve Hackett, Different Light, Matthew Perryman Jones, Deep Purple, and Dream Theater.

More than just a podcast, World United Music has emerged to bring you the best music being made in the 21st century by signed, unsigned and Independent artists.

To all the Artists, be sure to share the podcast episode with your network as it helps bring attention not only to your work but to the work of others as well. That's what the “World United Music” project is all about, bringing attention to all the artists who make great music.

SET: 01

Starting us off on the Long Road to awakening is Minnesota-based musician, singer and songwriter Chastity Brown with the soulful bluesy roots rock title song to her 2014 album “Long Way”. Our journey begins by revisiting the past where experience and memory can well up over each mile travelled back in time…it’s a long way, but a necessary journey to help clarify life going forward.

Following Chastity Brown is UK legend Eric Burdon with “27 Forever” taken from his 2013 album “Til Your River Runs Dry” A conscious conversation with ones self looking back in time with what would have been if we had taken the other path at the fork in the road. Eric Burdon bares his soul in 27 Forever.

Detroit’s own, Michael on Fire follows with “Cadillac Beach” taken from his 2014 album “The Artist, the Dreamer. The Lover and the Fool”.

Cadillac Beach, is beautifully expressed through poetic lyric and soothing acoustic guitar reminding us to appreciate life because it can change in an instant and leave us with unforgettable, painful moments. Wise words to remember when running around at 200 miles an hour trying to check off all the things on an endless to do list. Don’t miss out on what’s really important…

Burlap to Cashmere closes the set with the title track to their 1998 album “Anybody Out There” an empathic song of reflection and awakening as one finds themselves alone in searching for answers to life. A powerful moment on our long road.

And so, we begin a mindful journey to overcome the hurdles of life on the road to clarity, and all through the best music of today, on the minstral show.

SET: 02

Chris de Burgh starts off the second set with “Waiting for the hurricane” taken from his 2012 album “Home”

“Waiting for the hurricane” is a robust, energetic filled song that lifts the adrenalin levels, much the same way his classic tune, “Don’t pay the Ferryman” does. The energy and flow reminds us that, sometimes in life, there’s no escaping the storms that come our way, and so the best thing to do is brace yourself and stand up for what’s to come.

Following Chris de Burgh is Steve Hackett with the title track to his 2015 album “Wolflight”

“Wolflight” is a song that tells of community’s endless fight for survival from sinister forces while trying to preserve our existence. We stand our ground and fight back for our very survival…and its at this point where the awakening grows exponentially…a great tune by Steve Hackett and band.

Following Steve Hackett is “Different Light” from the Czech Republic with “In Love and War” taken from their 2016 Album “The Burden of Paradise” The song takes us through the aftermath of battles fought and down the emotional road that is left in their wake, to confront, the memories that have become scars in the game of love and war.

And so, we brace for the hurricanes that descend onto us in life and battle enemy forces to win our freedom, on the Minstral show.

SET: 03

Leading off the third set is Matthew Perryman Jones with the title track to his 2015 album “Cold Answer”. Poetic lyrics describe feelings of being spiritually grounded, when waking up in the middle of a war and seeing for the first time the cold reality of wars purveyors. Great empathic music by Matthew Perryman Jones

Deep Purple follows with “Blood from a Stone” taken from their 2013 album “Now What!?”

The peoples voice screams out in this song by Deep Purple as the community is always under attack by economic predators that often call themselves our governments. An excellent blues tune that packs a lotta truth.

Dream Theater closes the set with “Our New World” taken from their 2016 album “The Astonishing”

Hope cries out to build a new World, one that’s better and made for all and not just the few. And all we have to do, to make our dreams a reality, is to just go out and make it happen. The world is ours to build, and so freedom awaits in “Our New World”…a great tune to unite people in creating a better world.

Be sure to support the artists by going to their official websites, buying their music and joining their email platforms. Details are in the episode description.

And now the conclusion to an awakening, on the Minstral Show.

Have a great week everybody!

Michael on Fire

About: Michael on Fire

On the 45th day of an endless ride,
A lot of strength and a lot of pride,
I lost my brakes on the Great Divide,
Saw the chupacabra on the mountain side.”

With these words, and fueled by a driving acoustic rhythm and haunting windswept sound, the journey that is Michael on Fire’s new EP begins.

In many ways, the verse is representative of the tumultuous path he’s traveled as a musical troubadour. In a professional career that spans four decades he has toured relentlessly, long and far (“an endless ride”), constantly creating, performing and recording original music with an unswerving singularity of purpose (“a lot of strength and a lot of pride”), enduring all manner of mishap and hardship (“lost my brakes”), ever holding on to the mantle of musician (a full-time artist – no other day jobs), telling his truths in song and story, and projecting visions (“the chupacabra on the mountainside”) – of wonder, mystery and redemption.

As the follow-up to last year’s successful Always Yes CD, which spent more than half the year on the Americana radio charts, Cadillac Ranch reveals Michael on Fire as a complete musical being. He wrote and arranged all the songs; plays all the instruments (real instruments in real time – complete performances, no “punching in”), including guitar, bass, drums, piano, organ, mandolin, harmonica and castinets; he sings every vocal part; and produced, engineered and mixed the recordings.

“I’ve been fortunate to play and record and tour with great, great musicians, all over the world,” said Michael on Fire, “and that is a supremely joyful act – to make music with other people. At the same time, I am an artist, so sometimes it’s necessary for me to create art from a place that by-passes discussion and thought and collaboration, and to use my skills and my natural talents to convey a feel and a sound and a work of art that is uniquely ‘me.’

“I started recording as a teenager at United Sound in Detroit with some of the giants of rhythm and blues. I went on to record at Muscle Shoals (Alabama) with the legendary Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section, which played on some of the greatest records of all time. I’ve recorded in L.A. and New York, Nashville and London … I’ve had great musicians and producers like Stephen Stills and Joe Vitale produce records on me, and I have sang and played many instruments on records by many other artists; the point is I CAN DO THIS, SO I DO IT!”

In another lyric from the title cut, Michael on Fire sings, “I’m a truth teller, not a small talker,” and on this four-song collection, he paints from a bluesy-swampy-folk-rock palette and offers poetic insight and social commentary on a whole slew of subjects ranging from oil and banks to drugs and homelessness, technology, war, food preservatives, bee populations, self-help gurus, and more.

Cadillac Ranch, due out in July, is Michael on Fire’s 16th record from his various musical incarnations and one of two new Michael on Fire records scheduled for release this summer. The other is Michael on Fire Live in London, from last year’s UK concerts, where he was backed by a group of traditional Irish musicians. The record, which was produced by Colin Wilson, was mixed in Sydney, Australia and mastered by No’a Winter Lazerus in Los Angeles.

His impressive output of recorded material (more than 220 songs on record) notwithstanding, Michael has made his way as a performing artist traveling the world at a grassroots level, forging an ongoing relationship with an audience of people who feel a deeply personal and profound connection to him through his music and soulful expression.

"Over the decades I've seen big acts, major stars, impressive tours, but there is something about Michael on Fire that connects like no other. He is singularly peerless." - Tom Cochrun, Light Breezes. - http://tomcochrunlightbreezes.blogspot.ca/2011/05/michael-on-fire-unique-performance.html

“The prolific Michael on Fire has a new EP of rousing anthems called "Cadillac Ranch." He should know about the vehicular vernacular - he's from Detroit. MoF is also a master of the sing-along, stomp along slice of social commentary - think Michael Moore with an acoustic guitar. Sadly underappreciated after decades of great music, relentless touring and countless albums - this is a four song EP from a man who is never gonna have a day job. Good - because he excels at his night job.” ~ Bill Locey – Rockin Roll Call - http://blogs.venturacountystar.com/locey/2012/07/rock-n-roll-call-michael-on-fire---cadillac-ranch.html

“Out of the darkness and void of a decimated music industry comes a singer / songwriter that lights the fires of peace, love and empathy for a World that is desperate for positive energy. Michael on Fire single handedly rekindles the passion and light in an art-form that holds the heart, soul and voice of the people. Come listen to what everyone is talking about, Michel is on Fire and lighting up the darkness with songs that sing of common sense, reason, passion and empathy.” ~ Stewart Brennan – World United Music
