The Minstral Show – (Episode 058)

Welcome to Episode 58 of the Minstral Show!

We have three very engaging sets of music on today’s program, that covers an array of genres for free thinking and progressive minds featuring; Sea Pinks, The People, Southbound Snake Charmers, La Resistance, Matthew Perryman Jones, Miss Mobile Home, Wobbler, Fables, Midday Veil and James Yuill.

More than just a podcast, World United Music has emerged to bring you the best music being made in the 21^st century by signed, unsigned and Independent artists.

SET: 01

Starting off today’s show is Belfast Northern Ireland’s “Sea Pinks” with “I Don’t Feel Like Giving In” taken from their January 2016 album “Soft Days”.

A great album by the way that evolves in the progression of 80’s New Wave Pop with a few surprises. Band Members: Neil Brogan, Davey Agnew and Steven Henry, deliver attitude on Soft Days.

Following the Sea Pinks is US band “The People” with “Gone” a song taken from their self titled debut EP “The People”

“Gone” is a rockin blues tune with driving energy and attitude by Band members Steve Irribarra, Eric Ivener, Nick D'Itri and Chad Swanson. Good rockin sounds by The People.

Following The people is Australia’s “Southbound Snake Charmers” with “Moonshine Runners Blues” taken from their January 2016 - 5 song EP “Voodoo Chicken Shack”. Here’s an Infectious rockin’ Blues tune with attitude, packed with high energy that’ll certainly get your day moving. Lot’s of great music by this band on Bandcamp. So, go…check them out.

Closing the set is Birmingham Alabama Band “La Resistance” with “Head On”, a Jesus and Mary Chain cover to keep the energy flowing.

The song was released in 2011 on an EP of cover songs called “The Candidate” which consisted of 5 songs that influenced the band from the 80’s New Wave / Brit Pop era.

I Love the way Greg Summerlin, Randle Scruggs, Mischa Jordy and Wil Drake bang this one out…great solid rock n roll to close the set.

And so, the Sea Pinks, The People, Southbound Snake Charmers and La Resistance serve up energy, attitude and drive on The Minstral Show.

SET: 02

From Nashville Tennessee, Matthew Perryman Jones starts off the second set with “Happy” taken from his latest album “The Waking Hours” released in October 2018.

Matthew creates an ambiance of reflective thought through soul searching lyric and comforting tones to strike a common chord with the listener. The song asks us to look within and analyse why, when we have everything we need, why can’t we be happy…a powerful song by a great artist….Matthew Perryman Jones.

Following Matthew is Chris Stoddard and Samantha Ritter who are Miss Mobil Home, a Dream pop/shoegaze duo from New York, NY with their song “Fine Machine” taken from their June 2016 album “Glimmer Down”.

I find Dream Pop to be very soothing with a mysterious ambiance which puts me into a comforting reflective mood, made even more so by the poetic lyrics of this song. Very enjoyable music.

From Oslo Norway, Wobbler follows with “Foxlight” taken from their October 2017 album “From Silence to Somewhere”.

“Foxlight” captures the journey of the human spirit in isolation through the body’s physical death and the spirits resurrection in consciousness to embrace moments of clarity when the burdens and lies of empire are all purged from the mind…this is truly a masterpiece that reminds me of some of the best Progressive Rock Bands of the Late 60’s and early 70’s such as “YES” “Gentle Giant” “Genesis”, “Jethro Tull” and others that defined those times. From Silence to Somewhere is truly a must have album for progressive rock fans.

And so, another great set of progressive and reflective music to sooth your mind and soul on The Minstral Show.

SET: 03

Starting off our final set is Sydney Australia’s “Fables” with “Sherekhan” a single from their forth coming album.

Sherekhan is a hypnotic song with a haunting edge that borders the twilight of dreams and nightmares...a very progressive track from an album I am waiting patiently for. Good stuff.

From Seattle Washington, Midday Veil follows with “Empire is No More” taken from their 2015 album “This Wilderness”. The beginning of this song reminds me of the music that plays on The Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess when the shadow world appears…the song is truly enthralling especially in these surreal times of declining empires…it’s also worth noting that with the fall of empires, comes a sobering reality in the aftermath, when all the illusions fade away…a very captivating song to be sure.

James Yuill closes the set with “Kings Come of Noethinge” an unreleased song that didn’t make it onto his July 2017 album “A Change in State” but it is available in a six song package for a limited time for anyone who joins James mailing list. Personally, I think this song is brilliant which is why I’m sharing it with you here…hey, it’s also a good reason why one should sign up to an artists official website as I suggest at the end of every show.

The Minstral Show – (Episode 046)

Today’s episode takes us on a journey of awakening through songs that express the walls and battles we all have to overcome either by ourselves or collectively as a community. The road of life brings with it many hurdles, battles and lessons that eventually lead to an awakening and vision for creating a better world, featuring music by, Chastity Brown, Eric Burdon, Michael on Fire, Burlap to Cashmere, Chris de Burgh, Steve Hackett, Different Light, Matthew Perryman Jones, Deep Purple, and Dream Theater.

More than just a podcast, World United Music has emerged to bring you the best music being made in the 21^st century by signed, unsigned and Independent artists.

Starting us off on the Long Road to awakening is Minnesota-based musician, singer and songwriter Chastity Brown with the soulful bluesy roots rock title song to her 2014 album “Long Way”. Our journey begins by revisiting the past where experience and memory can well up over each mile travelled back in time…it’s a long way, but a necessary journey to help clarify life going forward.

Following Chastity Brown is UK legend Eric Burdon with “27 Forever” taken from his 2013 album “Til Your River Runs Dry” A conscious conversation with ones self looking back in time with what would have been if we had taken the other path at the fork in the road. Eric Burdon bares his soul in 27 Forever.

Detroit’s own, Michael on Fire follows with “Cadillac Beach” taken from his 2014 album “The Artist, the Dreamer. The Lover and the Fool”.

Cadillac Beach, is beautifully expressed through poetic lyric and soothing acoustic guitar reminding us to appreciate life because it can change in an instant and leave us with unforgettable, painful moments. Wise words to remember when running around at 200 miles an hour trying to check off all the things on an endless to do list. Don’t miss out on what’s really important…

Burlap to Cashmere closes the set with the title track to their 1998 album “Anybody Out There” an empathic song of reflection and awakening as one finds themselves alone in searching for answers to life. A powerful moment on our long road.

And so, we begin a mindful journey to overcome the hurdles of life on the road to clarity, and all through the best music of today, on the minstral show.

SET: 02

Chris de Burgh starts off the second set with “Waiting for the hurricane” taken from his 2012 album “Home”

“Waiting for the hurricane” is a robust, energetic filled song that lifts the adrenalin levels, much the same way his classic tune, “Don’t pay the Ferryman” does. The energy and flow reminds us that, sometimes in life, there’s no escaping the storms that come our way, and so the best thing to do is brace yourself and stand up for what’s to come.

Following Chris de Burgh is Steve Hackett with the title track to his 2015 album “Wolflight”

“Wolflight” is a song that tells of community’s endless fight for survival from sinister forces while trying to preserve our existence. We stand our ground and fight back for our very survival…and its at this point where the awakening grows exponentially…a great tune by Steve Hackett and band.

Following Steve Hackett is “Different Light” from the Czech Republic with “In Love and War” taken from their 2016 Album “The Burden of Paradise” The song takes us through the aftermath of battles fought and down the emotional road that is left in their wake, to confront, the memories that have become scars in the game of love and war.

And so, we brace for the hurricanes that descend onto us in life and battle enemy forces to win our freedom, on the Minstral show.

SET: 03

Leading off the third set is Matthew Perryman Jones with the title track to his 2015 album “Cold Answer”. Poetic lyrics describe feelings of being spiritually grounded, when waking up in the middle of a war and seeing for the first time the cold reality of wars purveyors. Great empathic music by Matthew Perryman Jones

Deep Purple follows with “Blood from a Stone” taken from their 2013 album “Now What!?”

The peoples voice screams out in this song by Deep Purple as the community is always under attack by economic predators that often call themselves our governments. An excellent blues tune that packs a lotta truth.

Dream Theater closes the set with “Our New World” taken from their 2016 album “The Astonishing”

Hope cries out to build a new World, one that’s better and made for all and not just the few. And all we have to do, to make our dreams a reality, is to just go out and make it happen. The world is ours to build, and so freedom awaits in “Our New World”…a great tune to unite people in creating a better world.

The Minstral Show - (Episode 040)

Welcome to episode 40 of "The Minstral Show"!

After a long difficult week in the Geopolitical arena, its important to shed the build-up of negative emotional energy that is brought on by having to battle against the insolent insanity of our out of control establishment.

Music is one of the best ways I know to help me prepare emotionally and mentally for whatever is to come down the road and so, I’ve put together a program with three solid sets of music to do just that, featuring, New Model Army, Riverside, Matthew Perryman Jones, Steve Hackett, Darling & Co, Julian Lennon, Great Lake Swimmers, Darrel Treece-Birch, and Roger Waters. Have a listen and if it resonates share it with your friends.

SET: 01

First up is Bradford UK Band, New Model Army with “Winter” taken from their 2016 album of the same name…

The first time I heard this song, it made me think of “The Game of Thrones” yet the song also contained the dark atmosphere of the times we were living in and surely the dark times we are living in today 2018…what better way to lead off the show because in order to heal our essence and absolve our fears, we must face the winter in our lives and walk through it. New Model Army are, Justin Sullivan, Michael Dean, Dean White, Marshall Gill, and Keri Monger.

Following New Model Army comes the contemplative sounds of “Riverside” and their song “Time Travelers” taken from their 2015 album “Love, fear and the Time Machine”…an instant classic in my mind as “Time Travellers” connects us through music and lyric to weave a deep meaningful understanding of reality and the times we live in…the song is a wonderful escape and reflection that’s difficult not to sing…”let’s go back to the world that was 30 years ago, let’s believe this is our time”. Mariusz Duda, Piotr Kozieradzki and Jacek Melnicki are Riverside…Riverside also has a new album in the works due for release in 2018, so we are certainly looking forward to that.

Rounding this healing set of music is Matthew Perryman Jones with his 2012 song “Land of the Living” taken from his forth album of the same name. What can I say, when you’ve written the most empathic song in the world, you need not worry about topping it…just remember,

The spark of light that is in you, is also in me, and all living things. We are all here for a short time to understand what existence is…we live as individual shadows of consciousness in a realm of the living.

“The journey does not end here, for we are a part of an infinite universe that is consciously alive in all of us, individually and collectively. If you close your eyes and listen to the silence, you will see that light, feel its infinity, and understand that you are just visiting here, for a short while, in the land of the living…and one day, you get to go home…so put away your fears, embrace life and what comes after…but while you are here, celebrate your stay through deeds of great vision, fitting of your empathic journey...

And Now, we are ready to confront the winter of darkness, as we time travel to the land of the living, on the minstral show…

SET: 02

Its been an intensive week of insanity in the global geopolitical arena, to say the least, where plans within plans behind the smoke built up global tensions, releasing a massive day of events which have left many of us, quite disconnected. So let’s remedy that.

Steve Hackett begins this next set with “Behind the Smoke” taken from his 2017 album “The Night Siren” an awesome album of expression not to be missed… There’s a great video of this song on the InsideOUT music channel on YouTube which is well worth watching as it brings to mind some of the real horrors that our brothers and sisters and their children are experiencing in the Middle East…the song and video entice us to stand up and face our fears head on, which is the key to surviving the daily deluge coming at us from all directions. Steve Hackett brings all of it to us packaged in a song. The song is also part of his awesome show. I know, because I got to see Steve Hackett and Band here in Montreal so be sure not to miss them when they come your way…but hurry, tickets go quickly.

Following Steve Hackett is Noumea, New Caledonia band Darling and Co with “Massive Day” taken from their 2014 EP “Close Connection”

“Massive Day” is a song about a soul who reaches out to guardian angel Hekamiah for strength and guidance in a time of great darkness and cataclysm…An awesome song that seemingly brings a wall of sound towards you like a tidal wave. Darling and Co are, Thierry "Pinpin", Gilbert Seliman, Patrick Eriale, Fred Mazoyer and Stephane Khoa-Hy

Julian Lennon closes the set with “Disconnected” from his 2013 album “Everything Changes” an awesome album that should be on everyone list of CD’s to have.

“Disconnected” is a reminder that life is more than the controlled illusion we live in everyday and that our feelings of being disconnected is the actual illusion because we really are all connected, by our common spiritual essence and spark of life. A very powerful song to close out the set and ease our disconnected frames of mind.

And so, let’s face what’s behind the smoke on this massive disconnected day…

SET: 03

In life, we are driven forward by an unknown force while always searching for meaning in whatever it is we are doing…sometimes, in moments of quiet, we come to reflect on the meaning of life, of where we are going, and how the things we are doing connect the dots of our past to the present…we are always searching and trying to find the answers to our silent questions…always trying to make sense of life’s moments…

The first song of the set does just that as Tony Dekkard’s “Great Lake Swimmers” captures that driving force within with their song “Still” taken from their forth studio album from 2009 “Lost Channels”.

Over the years Great Lake Swimmers have released six studio albums are now working on their seventh which should be released later in 2018, so once again there is much too look forward to in the months ahead.

Following Great Lake Swimmers is Darrel Treece-Birch with “No More Time” taken from his 2016 album of the same name. The song is about facing the tsunami of emotions and the five stages of grief after the sudden loss of a loved one. A very powerful song musically and lyrically in every way.

Darrel also plays keyboards with the British Melodic Hard Rock band “TEN” , he also writes / records and performs with original progressive rock band Nth Ascension.

Roger Waters ends the three song set with “The Last Refugee” taken from his 2017 Album “Is this the Life We Really Want“. Roger’s empathic and poetic lyrics gently shakes the listener awake from a systemic apathetic world of illusion to the nightmarish reality going on in the world around us. “The Last Refugee” is a reminder to us all that we must change our ways or it will be too late for our children and grandchildren.

About: Matthew Perryman Jones

Matthew Perryman Jones has a voice that calls out with intensity, truth and emotion. Jones began his career in 1997 in Decatur, GA, and then, after moving to Nashville to pursue music full-time, he issued his first solo release, Nowhere Else But Here, in 2000. As American Songwriter describes, “Matthew’s voice ensnares listeners with a rare authenticity and gritty strength.”

In 2006, Jones released Throwing Punches in the Dark, a departure from his previous Folk/Americana sound toward Pop Rock. In 2008, Swallow the Sea with break-out hit “Save You,” solidified Jones as an artist worth watching. Performing Songwriter Magazine noted Jones as a talent that follows “in the footsteps of Leonard Cohen and John Lennon.”

In 2011, Jones released Until The Dawn Appears which contains retellings of his most popular songs including “Save You,” whose video features Jaimie Alexander (Kyle XY, Thor, The Last Stand). Written shortly after his father’s death, Jones’ latest CD, Land Of The Living, is a courageous personal Odyssey through life’s most troubled waters of love and loss.

One of the most sought-after songwriters in Nashville, Jones builds on his accomplishments with his 2013 single, “Anymore of This.” The duet, written and recorded with Mindy Smith, was featured on ABC Family’s “Switched at Birth” in January.

Jones’ songs have also been featured in television shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Private Practice, Bones, Pretty Little Liars, NY Med, Flash Point, One Tree Hill, The Hills, and Eli Stone as well as in the 2012 movie release What To Expect When You Are Expecting.

In addition to Jones’ own headline tours, he has shared the bill with Katie Herzig, Matthew Mayfield, and Joshua James and has opened for such artists as Ingrid Michaelson, Shawn Colvin, Patty Griffin and Paula Cole. Jones is also an original member of the nationally acclaimed Nashville collaborative artist group “Ten Out of Tenn”.
