The Minstral Show – (Episode 053)

Solid rock greets the spirit on today’s episode of the Minstral Show featuring:

Black Country Communion, Ruby the Hatchet, Alice Cooper, Drenge, Dave Kerzner, Mike Mackenzie, Scott Ryan, Philip Morgan Lewis, The Spires, Miss Mobil Home, Fink, & IRIS Corporation.

More than just a podcast, World United Music has emerged to bring you the best music being made in the 21st century by signed, unsigned and Independent artists.

To all the Artists, be sure to share the podcast episode with your network as it helps bring attention not only to your work but to the work of others as well. That's what the “World United Music” project is all about, bringing attention to all the artists who make great music.

SET: 01

Black Country Communion opens the first set with “Man in the Middle” taken from their 2011 album “BCC II” This is a really great head boppin’ song that has Led Zeppelin influence all over it, and why not, with the great talents of Glenn Hughes, Joe Bonamassa, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian and producer Kevin Shirley, your going to get something special. An excellent song…but Beware the Man in the Middle, who’s cry is a riddle

Ruby the Hatchet follows with “Killer” taken from their August 2017 album “Planetary Space Child”. Here’s a song that comes out of the Blocks running as it certainly captured my attention the day it dropped. A big “Wow” for starters and an “Oh Ya” at the end…great head boppin rock music with attitude…love this tune.

Alice Cooper follows with “Paranoiac Personality” taken from his 2017 album “Paranormal”. There’s no mistaking an Alice Cooper track as this one goes for the ego’s jugular to be sure by showing the disconnection of society by fake news…we live in crazy times where everyone’s at each others throats because of this great disconnect which has matasticized through a million positions that are based in lies, half truths and exaggeration’s…which of course molds the “Paranoiac Personality”. A very good measurement of western society these days.

Drenge closes the set with “Before the War Begins” taken from their upcoming 2018 EP “Autonomy”. As the heat rises around the world in these dire economic times where lies, propaganda and a police state unfold, there is a great division cast by the controllers of society and it always happens before the war begins…history repeats…and this song is like a measuring stick to a boiling society where its controllers are greedily stirring the pot. Another excellent tune by UK band Drenge.

And so, the man in the middle is a killer with a paranoiac personality before the war begins…a hard rockin and engaging set, on the minstral show.

SET: 02

Dave Kerzner starts off the second set with “Chain Reaction” taken from his September 2017 album “Static” An excellent album filled with unspeakable truth.

“Chain Reaction” spells out what happens when you swallow the lies which then become your foundation…in that theater, there is a chain reaction of consequences and a losing war within, as Pride and ego get in the way leading to tears and going too far. It’s a brilliant song both musically and lyrically…that carries an important message for our times.

Mike Mackenzie from Calgary Alberta Canada follows with “Solar Winds” taken from his October 2017 album “Solstice”

After battling the persistent dark forces in life, there is a point of awakening that tows a fine line to help us stay on the right path…a solstice point within, if you will, that helps us navigate the rest of life’s journey. A top notch, song by a talented artist.

Scott Ryan from Spokane Washington follows with “Run on Sentence” taken from his 2011 album “Mercy Killings”. Scott Ryan delivers a passionate rock n soul performance to deliver a message, that Change comes for everyone that is far away from their heart, and it always comes just in time to save ones soul and put us back on course…in a way, this song reminds me of the southern rock made by Lynard Skynard…two very big thumbs up for “Run on Sentence”.

Philip Morgan Lewis closes the set with “Whistle Blower” a single released in 2014 and later in 2017 on his album “Grief Harbour” This song is for all the Truth tellers out there and in particular Julian Assange who is paying a heavy price for being a Whistle Blower by leaking to the public, the crimes being committed by the militarized economic deep state. In today’s society the good are punished while the criminals go free...yet it doesn’t have to be that way if we all stand up for what’s right. A great song by Philip Morgan Lewis that is sure to stir the passions in the awakened; a must share by everyone if we are to free the peoples voice.

And so, here’s another awakening set of music to define our times, just for you, on the Minstral show…

SET: 03

The Spires kick off the final set on today’s program with “Response to an Inquiry” taken from their 2013 album “Eternal Yeah”. The song is a progressive alternative psychedelic embrace with consciousness in the first fragile moments of an awakening. A personal favourite of mine that carries familiar sound bytes of some of the early solo albums by Paul McCartney…(Ram & Red Rose Speedway” come to mind) The Spires – Response to an Inquiry” Good tune.

From New York NY, Duo Chris Stoddard and Samantha Ritter better known as “Miss Mobile Home” follow with “Bird in the House” taken from their 2014 - debut EP “PhotoTaxis”. “Bird in the House” is a lyrically poetic song that carries a dream like atmosphere with a blend of happy yet melancholy memories…a wonderful song of reflection.

“Fink” follows with “Little Bump” taken from his May 2017 EP “Sunday Night Blues Dubs”…Little Bump” is a unique blend of acoustic psychedelic dream blues that sits on the edge of forever looking to the horizon. I could be in this state of mind all night long, one song is not enough and so the 5 song EP plays on repeat when I’m in that zone. Psychedelic dream blues…is that a new genre? “Little Bump” by Fink.

IRIS Corporation follows with “Highest Love” taken from their July 2009 album “A New Saint Session”. Highest Love is the perfect song to end today’s episode as we reach down from the state of awakening and pull ourselves up into a higher frequency to overcome a lost world…the truth is in you, and not in the digital society that has emerged to hypnotize the masses. Dare to be you in the highest frequency of love’s energy.

Be sure to support the artists by going to their official websites, buying their music and joining their email platforms. Details are in the episode description.

And now a response to an inquiry by a bird in the house, a little bump and highest love, on the minstral show. See you next week everyone.

The Minstral Show – (Episode 038)

WELCOME!

World United Music presents Episode 38 of The Minstral Show now streaming on Anchor FM, Apple Podcasts and Pocket Casts. This weeks show features a stellar lineup with music by: CHICO, Portrayal, Slowdive, Fink, Lunatic Soul, Tiger Moth Tales, Alan Parsons, Rick Miller and Agnes Obel. Click start and catch the Wave!

SET: 01

Nashville Tennessee Psychedelic Garage, Prog-rock group “Chico” open the set with a great driving rock tune called “Twilight Ravine” taken from their 2017 two song EP SPLIT. Band members Carson Mays, Ryan Quarles, Grayson Schweers, and Austin Seegers are the CHICO band dittos, and are ready to rock your socks off.

Next up is Shrewsbury UK duo, Rob Tranter and Joe Crook from “Portrayal” with their Nov 2017 single “Lost Souls”. An electronic retro 80’s new wave tune that is certainly not out of place with songs by INXS, Flock of Seagulls, Simple Minds or many other 80’s new wave bands who’s music continues to grace the radio waves around the world today. “Lost Souls is an excellent song worthy of more attention.

and, from Reading, Berkshire, England, “Slowdive” Featuring, Neil Halstead, Christian Savill, Nick Chaplin, Rachel Goswell and Simon Scott with their 2017 New Wave smash hit “Star Roving” to anchor the first set on this weeks episode of the Minstral Show.

Now, get ready because “In the Twilight Ravine, Lost Souls are Star Roving” on The Minstral Show.

SET: 02

Our next set of music combines the experimental psychedelic blues of UK artist “Fink” with the Progressive rock of Marius Duda’s Lunatic Soul and the riveting riffs and first lament of Peter Jones & Tiger Moth Tales for a special soulful evening mood.

Opening this second set is “Fink” with “Black Stetson” featuring Colin Stetson on sax. The song is taken from the Sunday Night Blues Dubs EP which released May 2017.

The 5 song EP has been one of my favorites over the past year and weaves its content throughout the World United Blues Playlist on the 2minstral YouTube channel.

I can listen to music like this all night long because it feels so multi dimensional. …In my opinion, “Fink” has been putting out some of his best material these past few years and so I eagerly wait for all his new releases. And When an artist is in the zone…an artist is in the zone….and Fink is certainly there.

Following Fink, is Marius Duda’s “Lunatic Soul” with “Crumbling Teeth and the Owl Eyes” from his 2017 album “Fractured”. A haunting progressive rock tune of a man surrounded by darkness struggling to hold onto his sanity…the only thing keeping his mind together is the love he has for his daughter.

“Lunatic Soul” is the progressive rock side-project by Riverside vocalist and bass guitarist Mariusz Duda.

He also has a new Lunatic Soul EP slated for release in the spring of 2018 so we’re certainly looking forward to that.

Closing out the 2nd set is “Tiger Moth Tales” with “The First Lament” taken from Peter Jones EP “Live at Summers End” (The Official Bootleg album)

The guitar work in “The First Lament” stunned me as only a Roy Buchanan and David Gilmour lead could…Truly, this is a great track and performance by the entire band.

Tiger Moth Tales is the brainchild of multi Instrumentalist and singer Peter Jones and Joining Peter are Mick & Andy Wilson, Gary Marsh and Paul Comerie. Together they put out some excellent music not to be missed.

SET: 03

The final set of this show is powerfully emotive through its poetically reflective lyrics, soft harmonic vocals and beautifully vibrant tones…THIS…this is the magic of Alan Parsons, Rick Miller and Agnes Obel.

Alan Parson starts the set off with his 2014 single “Fragile”; a song that is.. as captivating, and emotionally expressive as Alan’s previous work on iconic songs such as “Old and Wise” and “Don’t Let it Show”.  One could say that “Fragile” is our initial state of being in these times of awakening…truly we are very fragile in the larger sense of the world…a singers song and a very emotive one as well…

Following Alan Parsons is Rick Miller with “The Final Journey” taken from his March 2018 album “Delusional”.

“The final Journey” is a beautiful harmonic melancholy tune about a dying man and his final thoughts before he passes to the afterlife…the music, strings and vocal harmonies blend so beautifully its hard not to listen to the song more than once, as the poetic ambiance lingers as if speaking to ones soul…another classic song by Ontario Canada’s Rick Miller.

The final song of the set is by Agnes Obel called “Mary” taken from her October 2016 album “Citizen of Glass” a fitting song in many ways to end the set as it empathically connects the last two songs and the listener by the first gentle notes of the piano, and then through the soft angelic tones of Agnes Obal’s voice, which slowly echoes into the distance as the song ends. The ambiance cast is like moving away from a moment in time that stands in illuminating twilight and memory. The entire album is an empathic journey that absorbs ones essence; a must have album.

Be sure to visit the artists websites, buying their music and joining their email platforms, details are in the episode description.

And that will do it for episode 38 of the Minstral Show…have a great week and see you next Sunday at 7:00 PM eastern. Happy Easter and Passover everyone and enjoy the music.

Fink

About: Fink

Here’s a little potted history of Fink, from 2006 ‘til today. Some might see it differently, this is how we remember it…

BISCUITS for BREAKFAST – I guess this current incarnation of Fink all started when Guy said he was up for playing bass on a few tracks (‘So Long’ on Biscuits For Breakfast being the first I think) and Tim, over beers at a pub in Hampstead, was persuaded to play drums on a few (his first being probably the title track ‘Biscuits’). Then Ninja Tune released Biscuits in 2006, and the track ‘Pretty Little Thing’ kinda struck a chord out there for some reason. So we toured, and toured and toured, learning and playing, playing and learning… We packed a tent at Lowlands festival in Holland, we sold out La Maroquinerie in Paris and Joe’s Pub in New York City, we played from the USA to Poland and everywhere in-between.

DISTANCE and TIME – When we were through learning what a soundcheck was, we wrote Distance And Time in 2007. It has some really solid tracks we think: ‘Blueberry Pancakes’, ‘If Only’ (which led to me working with John Legend), and particularly ‘This Is The Thing’, which continues to give us love not only as a decent song but also as a sync machine… Timmy took a break to pursue real life for a moment, so we toured quite a lot of Distance with Adrian the Canadrian (seen rocking out in the video section at the Haldern festival in Germany). We kinda turned to Europe big time as the UK was ignoring us a little… Radio 1 was great, but the press didn’t want to know… So we toured Europe, and loved it, so we toured it again… supporting Camille and Massive Attack, playing huge amphitheatres and everywhere from LA to Cape Town, the Albert Hall to Carnegie Hall… it was awesome….

SORT of REVOLUTION – We stopped touring Distance and went straight into the studio. Well, I say studio, but we wanted to take it somewhere else… somewhere maybe more intimate… so we converted my apartment into a recording studio-cum-storage ground, and after several visits and threats of fines from Brighton Council we delivered Sort Of Revolution in 2009, the tricky third set. We loved dub and hadn’t really represented that on previous outings so we nailed ‘Sort Of Revolution’ and ‘Q&A’ – the former gaining us our first KCRW session in LA, the second our first BBC Maida Vale session for Gilles Peterson (perhaps the last DJ on Radio 1 we expected to like our stuff). This record saw us really start to play bigger, and after all the TV stuff the fame game was beginning to kick in, which was and still is a little weird… We really did tour the shit our of this album, including a mind-bending China tour, finishing up in Australia with one of our fave gigs ever I think, at The Corner Hotel in Melbourne….

PERFECT DARKNESS – So we took a little hiatus: a bit of writing time, put our lives back together a little bit… During all of the above Timmy wrote a few books (available now on Random House: they’re about bands… lots of famous musos from the 90’s love ‘em). We recorded a couple of Sideshow albums for Aus Music, and I wrote a load of songs for other people. Then we travelled to Los Angeles in November 2010 for a blitzkrieg recording session in Steakhouse studios with Billy Bush. We had 8 tracks written and roughly planned out, plus two to do on the ground once there… y’know, kinda soak up the atmosphere as well as the Mexican junk food… We nailed the whole record from start to finish in 16 days – a feat that I think surprised the producer as much as us… we wanted to nail some hardcore blues (“Wheels”) and some big tracks (“Fear Is Like Fire”) as well as a stringy epic (“Perfect Darkness”). It came out in June 2011, and if we thought we’d toured a lot before, we were in for a surprise… eighteen months practically without let-up, taking us to new places (Oslo, Lisbon, San Diego, Mumbai), and old places but in a totally different way, like Amsterdam, this time playing Queen’s Night with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, where our stuff was scored by Jules Buckley. We released the evidence as a live album, and the whole touring period was captured on yet another live album (Wheels Turn Beneath My Feet), and after a final bash supporting the Stones at Hyde Park, we hung up our touring trousers for a while…

HARD BELIEVER – During our little break, “Warm Shadow” got released as a single after it was featured in the hit TV show The Walking Dead. It’s proved arguably the most popular thing we’ve had out there, and gave us even more evidence that people kinda like the weirder, more experimental side of Fink. So that, coupled with the orchestral experience, showed us the way to go… we met up in a few different locations (London, Amsterdam, LA, Brighton… even when you’re not touring you still feel like touring) and jammed about 20 or 30 new tunes, which got whittled down to 12, which then got whittled down to 8… so we booked another Billy Bush mission to LA, this time Sound Factory studios, full of confidence that we’d nail another couple of bangers in situ. And it worked – we basically had the busiest, hardest, most inspiring, enjoyable and intense 17 days, mainlining the coffee, performing to the mics, layering it up, trying new things out, throwing stuff away and writing new bits… (we even went easy on the Mexican junk food in favour of a few “chopped and tossed” salads)… and to our ears is was sounding pretty damn good… we premiered one of the newies “Shakespeare” on Maz from Communion’s XFM show in Jan 2014… then “Looking Too Closely” and title track “Hard Believer” hit the airwaves a few months later, very gratifyingly played on many radio stations all the way from Berlin to Los Angeles… the album emerged in July so we celebrated by playing 96 gigs across Europe and North America with our friends and musical partners Chris Nicholls (guitar) and Rubeb Hein (piano)… when the tour finished, Fin settled down to make an “alternative version” of the album using some of the more atmospheric sounds on the record, which emerged as Horizontalism in May 2015… now for some more festivals!
