A full array of songs, roar across the net like a digital comet, as episode 49 begins from the light and moves towards the darker waves and atmosphere on the spectrum of music, featuring: Robert Plant, Temples, Goat Girl, Art D’Ecco, The Gorlons, Secret Colours, Sea Pinks, Black Mirrors, Holy Wave, Future, Has a Shadow, and Alice Cooper.

SET: 01

Robert Plant starts us off with “The May Queen” taken from his October 2017 album “Carry Fire”

“The May Queen” is an energetic and captivating song from first note to last, a wall of acoustic sound with a catchy beat that carries a great voice from the early days of Led Zeppelin. Robert Plant truly delivers a great tune from a stellar new album.

Temples follows with “Prisms” taken from their 2014 EP “Shelter Song” - “Prisms” is a Retro 60’s Psychedelic Pop tune that brilliantly pulls the curtain away from the mysterious prism of the day. TV. A very catchy song by a band that seems to time shift their musical talents without effort.

Goat Girl follows with “Crow Cries” a single released in August 2017 that lyrically points out the hypocrisy of a generation’s belief while the obvious stares everyone in the face…a short but compact song that expresses the irony of a generation against the reality of today’s world.

Art D’Ecco closes the set with “Nobody’s Home” a June 2018 single

With a Bowie / New Wave-ish aura that crests out of the Gulf Islands of BC Canada. An excellent song just released on Paper Bag Records that is going to do very well.

And so, here’s the first set of music from the lighter side of grey, on the Minstral Show.

SET: 02

From Springfield Missouri, The Gorlons open the second set with “Stare into the Sun” taken from their 2014 debut, self titled album, “The Gorlons” an album that is filled with awe inspiring sounds that time warps the listener into the future as well as the past at the same moment...like a tempest in a tea cup, this band delivers.

Next is “Secret Colours” from Chicago with “It can’t Be Simple” taken from their 2014 album “Positive Distractions”. I loved this tune the moment it dropped due to its retro 60’s psychedelic Pop sound, a sound I personally can’t seem to get enough of these days and it’s One of many great tunes by Secret Colours.

Belfast Ireland’s Sea Pinks follow with “Dream Happening” taken from their September 2014 album “Dreaming Tracks”. Dream happening is a retro 60’s Pop Psych / Surf track that’s rich in appetizing sounds with a melancholy tinge to catch the listener from the first note on…great sound and great tune.

Closing the set is Belgium’s “Black Mirrors” with Funky Queen” a 2016 single re-released on Napalm Records in 2017.  “Funky Queen” packs a wallop with a pause, build-up and explosion that is guaranteed to grab your attention and make you scream into music ecstasy! I’m an instant fan.

And so, staring into the sun can’t be simple when the dream’s happening with a funky queen, On the minstral show.

SET: 03

Starting off the final set is Austin Texas band “Holy Wave” with the title track to their 2014 album “Night Tripper”. – a song that meshes New Wave / Dark Wave, Garage rock and psychedelic rock into a Holy Wave of sound…a big thumbs up.

Next, from Paris France is “Future” with “Skylights” taken from their 2013 EP “Abyss”,

“Skylights” is a driving Dark Wave / Garage Rock tune that one might find in a movie to drive home the eerie atmosphere of the empty city streets outside a packed dance club in the late hours before something major happens. The band delivers a sound that echoes warning and leaves an impression on the listener.

Following “Future” from Guadalajara Mexico is, “Has a Shadow” with the title song of their November 2013 debut album “Sky is Hell Black” a progressive dark wave tune that tells of a looming oblivion from the night sky…a song that captures that eerie goose bump feeling one gets just before something bad happens…which leads perfectly into our final song by “Alice Cooper” with “Fireball” taken from his 2018 album “Paranormal”. An Album that should see a multi platinum award for its rock n roll content alone, certainly one of this year’s top albums.

So, as the song title implies, A Fireball’s come out of the sky to end it all including this week’s episode of the minstral show.

Good music often provokes thoughts of the past within to bring us back in time to places, faces and atmosphere of moments we hold in our memories…and While our minds are carried away by the music, we also process thoughts and moments to help make sense of where we were, where we are and where we are going in life. Today’s episode offers an awesome lineup of artists with songs that examine some of those thoughts and some of our questions to life, featuring; Old Sea Brigade, Lonely Robot, Parker BOMBSHELL, Dave Kerzner, John Palmer, Hiromitsu Agatsuma, Roger Waters, Darrel Treece-Birch, First Aid Kit, Raise Hell Over the Summer, Black out Mechanics, and James Harker.

Atlanta raised and Nashville based singer songwriter Ben Cramer is “Old Sea Brigade” who starts off this week’s episode with the title track to his January 2017 EP “Wash Me Away”. A song that questions our living in the fast lane and how we might view our lives 20 years down the road when we begin to look back at what once seemed important to us.

UK’s John Mitchell is the “Lonely Robot” who follows with “In Floral Green” taken from his April 2017 album “The Big Dream”. A captivating song that examines our disconnectedness with each other and our feelings of isolation in these modern times.

Parker BOMBSHELL follows with “Dust taken from their 2014 EP “Hours Down”. “Dust” is our origin and our destiny yet while we live on the Earth we are conscious beings trying to stave off our own destruction in our everyday existence. A great tune and one of my favourites by Parker BOMBSHELL.

Dave Kerzner follows with “My Old Friend” taken from his brilliant 2014 album “New World”

My Old Friend comes to us in quiet moments, where our thoughts and beliefs sometimes cross over to a conscious realm where those no longer among us dwell and connect in our minds...sometimes, those thoughts may also be an older copy of oneself...My Old friend is that intimate conversation.

And so, its time for more music to reflect on, as the waves Wash us away in floral green dust to visit old friends, on the Minstral show.

SET: 02

Sculpter, artist and musician John Palmer kicks off the second set of music with “Clotchley Road” a single he released in Dec 2015. The song looks back in time to a comforting place packed with memories that most of us can certainly identify with in our own past…for John Palmer it is “Clotchley Road” for me it’s St. Catherine Street in Montreal.

There are many Genres present in this really great blend of music that should appeal to New Wave, Dream Pop, Club Dance, Alternative Rock and Psychedelic rock fans alike as the song captivates the senses and takes us on a trip down memory lane.

Japanese artist, Hiromitsu Agatsuma follows with “Yuudachi” taken from his 2001 album “Agatsuma” This song captures the determination and urgency felt within as we look back on reality and life spinning away from us. A brilliant instrumental brimming with energy and the rose called life.

Roger Waters follows with a live performance of “Comfortably Numb” taken from his 2015 Live performance of “The Wall”…a masterpiece from the past that reconnects to the present day with a guitar solo that is out of this world…simply stunning and very relevant.

Darrel Treece-Birch continues the journey with “Riding the Waves” taken from his 2016 album “No More Time”. In short, this upbeat progressive rock Instrumental takes the listener to a place of reassurance and positive reflection. A reminder to us that all that life is a gift and a blessing, so why not ride the waves while you’re here on Earth.

And so, we ride the waves and our memories…to process life with all its lessons, good and bad on the minstral show.

SET: 03

Sweden’s “First Aid Kit” starts off the final set with “Wolf” taken from their 2012 album "The Lion's Roar". The Duo is made up of sisters Klara and Johanna Söderberg who remind me a little of Moma Cass Elliot, and Michelle Phillips of the Moma’s and Popa’s. Certainly, their vocals are very close as their song “Wolf” will attest. I’d love to hear these girls cover one of the Moma’s & Popa’s songs just to see how vocally close they really are…

New York, NY’s Curtis Williams, Kenny Woodson, Mark Brown, and Nic Bucholtz are “Raise Hell Over the Summer” or RHOTS for short with an infectious Psychedelic dark wave rock tune “High School Weight” taken from their 2017 EP, Songs from YouTube. Hey, schools out and so, “Raise Hell Over the Summer”

Alternative Rock Duo Hugo Legrand & Raphael Coville from Vannes France are the “Black Out Mechanic’s” with their song “Stay on the Top” taken from their 2014 - 3 song EP “Unplugged”. “Stay on the Top” is a hypnotic track that seemingly rides out of a stormy dream state into safety and asylum…A solid tune by Black Out Mechanics.

The UK’s James Harker closes the set with “Swanbourne” taken from his 2015 album The Ebb & Flow. Swanbourne is a very deep meaning and poetic song that wonders and asks, are we all hidden in time amongst the billions of actors on the stage, all vying for unique meaning and prescience in our linear history? A very fitting song to close the set…of course everyone is unique and capable of great deeds, just go out and be yourself and don’t worry what others think…

The Minstral Show – (Episode 047)

The World changed on September 11^th, 2001; a day that will live on in infamy as a nightmare, that violently shook awake a western world living in apathy. For many, the finger of blame, that came from government and mainstream TV & news mediums was embraced and believed without question, but for others, it was an awakening to something far more sinister as the coming wars on oil rich nations would prove and so a truth seeking alternative media already up and running before that fateful day, sprung to life exponentially using the new age of internet communication to connect the dots and feed a growing hunger for truth via user friendly websites, chat rooms and social media.

The music industry, which was controlled by fewer and fewer hands was also censored, in that the bulk of mainstream TV and radio carried a disconnected corporate program while in contrast, the internet opened up new doors for independent artists to let out the real feelings and expressions of the people through their music.

Music emerged via the Internet to express the conscious awakening and the discontent people were feeling with the direction our governments and news mediums were leading us in…throughout modern history the peoples voice can be heard through music for moral causes and yet the mainstream airwaves played none of it…

This weeks episode of the Minstral Show will showcase some of that music featuring, Peter Case, Brother Speed, Jack Savoretti, Griffin House, Darling and Co, Rachel Van Zanten, Andy White, Switchfoot, Damien Dempsey and Isaac Hayden.

SET: 01

Starting off this musical awakening is Peter Case with “Lost in the Sky” a Psychedelic folksy blues tune from his 2002 album “Beeline”

“Lost in the Sky” is a fitting title to the way many of us felt in 2001 as we were cut lose from the apathetic world after 911 to face an unknown future…however that future came with a new age of information, discovery and awareness through the internet…everything changed as the jolt awakened some of us to the core and into a different state of mind while also leaving many feeling a little lost with a lot of questions…here’s a song that not only covers the atmosphere of the time but a song that will absorb your essence and heal the rift in consciousness. A song that receives a 10 out of 10 from this old DJ.

Following Peter Case is Aussie / UK band “Brother Speed” with their late 2013 single “Which Side I’m On”…a song that seemingly expresses the frustration of the individual and public when not listened to by society’s governments or its controllers when questions are asked. A great song with a unique blend of psychedelic pop and shoe gaze rock.

Following Brother Speed is Jack Savoretti with “Lost America” taken from his 2008 album “Harder than Easy”…”Lost America” is a song that shines the light on the chaos and confusion of America in the aftermath of 911 by the insane political turmoil and division that followed. A truly underrated song and album by one of today’s very best artists.

Closing this 4 song set is Griffin House with “Go Through it” taken from his 2013 album “Balls”… the song expresses feelings of depression which is a common feeling when something major happens in ones life such as a break up, loss of life, or even an awakening to a truth that changes ones foundation…“Go Through it” empathically helps us to expresses our feelings in an emotional healing process as there’s no escaping emotional pain, sometimes, we just have to go through it to heal ourselves…

And so, The feelings of being a little lost in waking times is normal and well expressed in music, on the Minstral Show. 

SET: 02

Starting off the second set is Noumea Caladonia Band Darling & Co with “Wrong Lines” taken from their 2014 – 6 song EP “Close Connection” – “Wrong Lines” is a solid Rock tune that leans into Progressive Rock and carries a strong message of what ales the human race. Corporations drive human greed and there is no off switch…we must save ourselves by veering away from the wrong lines if we are to survive…

Following Darling & Co is Rachel Van Zantan with her 2010 single “My Country” Inspired by the Tahltan women blockading Shell in defense of the Sacred Headwaters in northern British Columbia. The song gets to the heart of what is very wrong in our world today…as there are no moral values in a corporate boardroom when it comes to life. A very powerful song that upholds life, moral value and consciousness.

Andy White closes the set with “This is Not a Television Show” taken from his November 2017 album “The Guilty and the Innocent”. The Irish are not afraid to say what they feel, I know because I’m Irish; When there are injustices in this world the Irish are usually the first to stand up for justice and so Northern Ireland native Andy White steps up to the plate and says it like it is…wake up my friends, because this is not a television show, pay attention and stand up for what is morally right.

A set of music that speaks truth to power from a strong foundation of moral character…this is the music revolution, on the Minstral Show. 

SET: 03

Switchfoot starts off the final set with “Fading West” taken from the album “The Edge Of The Earth”…an album filled with Unreleased Songs From The Film "Fading West".

When you come full circle through an awakening where the establishments illusions fall away, and you realise that everything you were told about the world was all a bunch of lies, hopes of thriving can shatter, leaving you with only one place left to go, “Home”. This ones for you Michael Ruppert…may you rest in peace my friend, your voice will carry on

Damien Dempsey follows with “The City” taken from his 2007 album “To Hell or Barbados” one of Dempsey’s very best songs in my opinion as he gets right to the real heart of the solution to the worlds problems, we are all part of a family, and we need to remember that fact if we are to move the world forward and in the right direction.

Isaac Hayden closes the set with his 2014 brilliant cover of One Republic’s “I Lived”. A song about living and experiencing life the way it was intended. Imagine if we all did that…if we just stopped living in the greedy corporate illusion and live the way we were intended to live on this planet, as free men and women working together as a community…it’s not too late, hope remains…live life to its fullest with respect to others and yourself.
