Legends of Rock: Roger Waters

About: Roger Waters

George Roger Waters (born 6 September 1943) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and composer. In 1965, he co-founded the progressive rock band Pink Floyd with drummer Nick Mason, keyboardist Richard Wright and guitarist, singer and songwriter Syd Barrett. Waters initially served as the group's bassist and co-lead vocalist, but following the departure of Barrett in 1968, he also became their lyricist and conceptual leader.

Pink Floyd subsequently achieved international success with the concept albums The Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals, The Wall and The Final Cut. By the early 1980s, they had become one of the most critically acclaimed and best-selling acts in the history of popular music; as of 2013, they have sold more than 250 million albums worldwide, including 74.5 million units sold in the United States. Amid creative differences within the group, Waters left in 1985.

Waters' solo career has included three studio albums: “The Pros and Cons of Hitch Hiking”, “Radio K.A.O.S.” and “Amused to Death”. In 1990, he staged one of the largest and most extravagant rock concerts in history, “The Wall” – Live in Berlin, with an official attendance of 200,000. As a member of Pink Floyd, he was inducted into the US Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 and the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2005. That same year he released “Ça Ira,” an opera in three acts translated from Étienne and Nadine Roda-Gils' libretto about the French Revolution. Later that year, he reunited with Pink Floyd bandmates Mason, Wright and David Gilmour for the Live 8 global awareness event; it was the group's first appearance with Waters since 1981.

Roger has toured extensively as a solo act since 1999 and played The Dark Side of the Moon in its entirety for his world tour of 2006–2008. In 2010, he began The Wall Live and in 2011 Gilmour and Mason appeared with him during a performance of the double album in London. As of 2013, the tour is the highest-grossing of all time by a solo artist.

Nausika

About: Nausika

Nausika is Frouke van Es, singer-songwriter and vocal coach from The Netherlands. As Nausika, which literally translates into ‘burner of ships’, her music investigates the choice between lingering and moving on. November 2014 saw the release of debut EP “Groom the Monster”

Nausika sounds filmic and ethereal, yet determined. Unconventional, layered and complex but armed with recognisable song-structures and strong female vocals that keep lingering long after they have been silenced. Oceans of wailing sirens evoke images of abandoned roads, dark bottomless ponds and desolate mountain views. Impending doom never seems far way in Nausika’s land of perpetual twilight and occasional subterranean eruptions.

Anilah

About: Anilah

Anilah is the solo project from vocalist and composer Dréa Drury, a musician based in the Selkirk Mountains of Western Canada. She combines the shamanic and esoteric with modern elements, weaving a soundscape that is ethereal and yet solid with rhythmic pulse. For fans of Lisa Gerrard, Dead Can Dance, Wardruna, and Tool.

The music of Anilah is born from a practice that is deeply inspired by nature and a willingness to engage with the natural world within a framework of reciprocity. In this way, artistic expression becomes a symbiotic relationship with the elements. All of the music is composed in nature, while walking or in meditation. An unspoken conversation occurs which influences the composition, and by entering into this state, I find myself listening to melodic structures that are inherent within all of nature. There is a widening of the senses, and an unraveling of conceptual boundaries. My art and music are continuously influenced by these practices which cultivate benevolence, compassion, and gratitude.

Legends of Rock: Steve Hackett

About: Steve Hackett

Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic.

With Genesis, Steve's guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops to the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR, highly successful in America.

After GTR Steve worked further with many renowned musicians such as Paul Carrick, Bonny Tyler, John Wetton and Brian May, who has credited Steve as an early influence. Steve went on to produce his hit album Genesis Revisited. He went even further back to his roots with Blues with a Feeling, whilst continuing to challenge his own 'horizons' with an amazingly eclectic mix of sounds, genres and a sense of the exotic that excites his many followers to this day.

Recent albums have possessed a high level of sophistication, along with an ever-present powerful dynamic, from the dramatic and atmospheric darkness of Darktown and Wild Orchids to the colourful voyage through time and space of To Watch the Storms. 2009's Out Of The Tunnel's Mouth, written and recorded in the midst of domestic and professional upheaval, was released to an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and reviewers alike, many of them proclaiming it his best ever. Hot on the heels of OOTTM was Beyond the Shrouded Horizon released in 2011, which has easily received an equally enthusiastic response. In 2012 Steve collaborated with Chris Squire of Yes on the "Squackett" album A Life Within a Day.

Steve's live electric gigs take his fans on an extraordinary journey drawn from a rich musical heritage. Perennial Genesis favourites such as the mighty Firth Of Fifth sit alongside solo classics, while more recent solo material is also included, demonstrating that Steve is an artist still at the very top of his game. Supported by some of the best musicians on the planet, Steve's unique guitar work remains the fulcrum on which this challenging and exhilarating show is balanced.

Genesis' induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2010 stands as a testament to the enduring qualities of their music. Steve has always held a torch for the classic Genesis music. His Genesis Revisited II, a double CD, involves several iconic artists and contains many Genesis favourites. It was released in late October 2012. A Genesis Revisited worldwide tour in 2013 was followed by a Genesis Extended tour in 2014 and early 2015 due to popular demand...

Never one to rest on his laurels, Steve continues to blaze a trail with new material and to be an exhilarating and groundbreaking artist. Following the success of his album Wolflight, his latest album The Night Siren gained even more notoriety, charting in several countries and reaching the top 30 in the UK charts. He tours worldwide. In February / March 2018 he will tour from North America to South America encompassing his whole career with Genesis Revisited, new and old solo numbers and a touch of GTR...

Ending Satellites

About: Ending Satellites

Ending Satellites is a project that is both musical and visual, whose main ambition is to offer to who may wish to undertake, a journey out of time, within a few moments, in a universe where images become melodies.

At the same time, Ending Satellites is an eclectic artistic entity, evolving around the compositions and shots of Damien Dufour, but also shaped by the different personalities that come together in this project.

At the beginning of Ending Satellites, there was the end of something; to be born in his epilogue, another journey.

~ Francais~

Brett Shady

About: Brett Shady

Of the songs on his debut full-length album “The Devil to Pay”, Brett Shady says, "These are songs that were written out of frustration more than anything else." Having performed as a frontman for rock and punk bands for fifteen years, Brett began writing songs four years ago after a cross-country tour with the band Golden Shoulders. "I needed more artistic control and the opportunity to express myself that I wasn't getting performing other people's music."

With such disparate influences as Elliott Smith, Marty Robbins, Paul Simon, and Sam Cooke, Brett's songs paint a picture of heartbreak and regret and raise questions of good and evil deeply rooted in the American song writing tradition. Most of the ten songs on The Devil to Pay were written about his move from Northern California's gold country to LA ten years ago, a period Brett says was "full of isolation and depression and struggling to find my place in the world." Recorded in Nevada City, California by renowned engineer/producer Dana Gumbiner, the album features an ensemble of veteran musicians and is available at most online stores.

Brett released his follow up album, “National Hotel” Novemeber 11th, 2014 which continues his unique blend of Folk, Pop, and Americana Alternative Rock that solidifies his style, his song character, and his appeal to a growing audience of music starved fans. “Brett Shady” is the real deal.

Dirk Maassen

About: Dirk Maassen

Born in the winter of 1970, I spent my early days in a small town near Aachen, right at the Border of the Netherlands. My first contact with music was with one of the legendary carnival processions which made me feel in so many different colors that I knew right away that music was one of the most wonderful things in life.

From the age of 10, I took lessons on piano and church organ. My teacher, the sexton of our small village took me under his wing into the church quite often to play on a huge Pipe organ which was really impressive and amazing, as it made me feel like I was sitting right inside the music and become a part of it.

When I got older, I was influenced by 80s synth pop, and bought my first synthesizer. I started playing in different synth pop bands including memorable gigs in small clubs and later in a few festivals and CD productions. Nothing too serious, but at the age of 19 my band mates and I thought we where close to a breakthrough when our first CDs appeared in the local record store with a few hundred fans joining us at our concerts ;-) Apparently there was no breakthrough so we all went our separate ways and focused on our own creative process in music.

After a long break, I found my way back to the piano in 2011 and started composing again in 2012. As I am a software engineer by day, I create music preferably early morning or late at night which is not only a matter of time but also very inspiring times for making music.

Having a background in theory and methodology in my earlier stages, I found the results of improvisation transformed my music into structured compositions over time.

My music is inspired by Einaudi, Tiersen and Nevue with influences of the 80s but not limited to these. There is no genre or style I try to adopt, as I do not want to limit my creativity. It's all about sharing impressions, emotions and vibes with others. In a way I am making "social music" and hence I love to publish my music on social networks and getting in touch with my audience one on one.

In this light I hope you enjoy my music, share it, like it and drop me a line.

Matt Hutchison

About: Matt Hutchison

From the very beginning, Matt has been inspired by a good song and story.  When he was six years old, he fell for The Beatles so hard that he thought he was in fact Paul McCartney, even going so far as to put that name at the top of his school work.  He later spent three of his formative years living in England soaking up the sounds of the early British Invasion and digging into the catalog of early Rock & Roll and Country Western music.

Matt's grandfather, "Pappy", built a cabin on Cove Mountain in the George Washington National Forest of West Virginia.  Originally intended as a hunting getaway, Matt now considers this place his songwriting home.  The only thing he hunts for these days is a good melody and a whiskey buzz.  With no running water or electricity, he goes back in time with old-time country radio and setting a rhythm to the rising and setting of the sun.

His latest project “Three Minute Man,” is a reflection of a simpler songwriting approach in a collection of new songs that clock in around 3 minutes each.  Breathing life into these songs is a band of old friends and fine musicians from Baltimore and surrounding locales.

Keep your ears to the ground for “Three Minute Man,” due out November 2014.

Eddie Gumucio & The Electrics

About: Eddie Gumucio & The Electrics

Bolivian/American songwriter Eddie Gumucio traveled four continents and thirty five countries by his early twenties before anchoring his wanderlust into a dedicated music career.

Taking from his travels and childhood spent in South America, Eddie brings a left of center vibe to his Indie Pop. It is world music that is not reserved to a certain style. A synthesis of stargazing melancholy, danceable rhythm, and vagabond observation.

His latest album, Skin & Bones (an online release), reveals an intimate portrait of a songwriter and his guitar. It counters nicely to the full band swagger of his debut, When There You Were. They are two sides of a coin that successfully translate beyond borders.

Eddie Gumucio & The Electrics will release “The Pre Side of Fall” on November 11th, 2014. Check out their Bandcamp page for details.

Ben Foerg & The Absurd

About: Ben Foerg & The Absurd

On a dark, lonely night in Idaho Springs, Colorado, Ben Foerg, Josh Loney and Colin Jensen sat round the fire pit at the trailer park's community area. Whilst discussing Kant's categorical imperative, Plato's Cave and McKay's Anchorman, a flaming star fell from the sky, causing the otherwise placid trio to fall into a state of incurable bewilderment. The falling star (which could not be put in your pocket when caught, though they did try) itself has very little to do with the story; however, witnessing the phenomenon of said falling star left the trio in a state of madness from which they would never return.

Left to cope with the throes of insanity, in possession of neither goods nor ideas, the trio took a hike along Soda Creek and before long found themselves simmering in the Indian Hot Springs. Wafting the fumes of the anachronistically named springs, Ben turned to Josh, Josh turned to Colin, Colin turned to Ben and, all at once, they knew: They must start a band.

Originally, Josh played fluglehorn (Colin and Ben insisted he play trumpet, but Josh was a purist) while Ben and Colin handled rhythm, melody and lyrics with purely guttural noises. As this particular orientation only attracted the attention of the various bands of gypsies and hippies who traveled through the mountainous region of Idaho Springs, they eventually realigned and regrouped as a bluegrass group. Unfortunately, Ben couldn't play bluegrass guitar, so they reformed as a bebop jazz group. Colin had problems with theory though, so they, once again, broke down then rebuilt. Stronger. Faster. And better. They rebuilt themselves as a genre you've heard of, but Josh wasn't comfortable with genre distinctions. So they ditched the idea entirely and played whatever was in their squanch.

At first, they were known as The Holy Mountain Men. Then they became Indian Electric Boogaloo. And then, neath the full moon, they finally knew what they were: The Absurd.

Coming to a children's party, bah mitzvah, or charity event near you soon, The Absurd is every family's idea of a good time. Buy their things now, and give them your money!

The Chemistry Set

About: The Chemistry Set

The London psychedelic-pop band The Chemistry Set have quite a history. Veterans of the alternative Manchester label “Imaginary” and cassette only label “Acid Tapes”, they helped lead the neo-psychedelic boom of the late 1980's. During this time The Chemistry Set were featured in the British and European underground press, had mainstream and underground radio play worldwide and countless fanzine appearances, including releasing 3 flexi discs with fanzines (remember them?).

Indeed counting Factory & Hacienda boss Tony Wilson amongst their fans, The Chemistry Set reached the coveted Indie Top 20. Receiving regular airplay on the legendary John Peel’s show (Peel even went so far as to sending the band a hand-written fan letter!), they also toured globally but have held a deep fondness for Spain, making lifelong friends there. The band split in 1991, took a bit of a hiatus, remaining silent… until The Chemistry Set “MACH II” remarkably reappeared in 2008!

Their return came about when their unreleased LP from 1989 “Sounds Like Painting” somehow was uploaded onto numerous blogs and was downloaded over 10,000 times in 2008.

Cult Arranger/songwriter [and former Electric Prunes member] David Axelrod digs The Chemistry Set, saying “Real Music! Music that makes you think and really listen to!” He loved how they added a symphonic section of his song “Sanctus” from The Electric Prunes’ masterwork “Mass in F Minor” into their reworking of Del Shannon’s “Silver Birch”. Originally found on Shannon’s “The Further Adventures Of Charles Westover”, his cult 1968 LP widely acknowledged by aficionados to be the pop milestone of his post-“Runaway” era. This calls to memory the occasion when The Chemistry Set once went so far as to insert a cover version inside of another cover. Their version of “See Emily Play” (for the Syd Barrett tribute “Beyond the Wildwood” [Imaginary]) has the “Bicycle Rider” section of The Beach Boys then still unfinished “Smile” album inserted within the song. Their cover was singled out in glowing reviews of the tribute and was highly noted.

Since the return, the second stage of the group has seen the birth of three new CDs: “Alchemy # 101”, “This Day Will Never Happen Again and “Chemistry is Just Numbers” (Carl Sagan quote). The releases received critical acclaim with mainstream and indie press and radio play in the UK, USA and Europe. In 2011 they released a 7” vinyl single “Impossible Love” (Fruits de Mer), which sold out in just five days. The group have been extremely well received in the USA with regular radio play on alternative and college radio. The band also received a very favourable review in The Sunday Times.

In 2011 the boys took to the stage for the first time in 20 years, augmented by musical friends from Spain (including #1 Spanish indie DJ “Gato”). It brought a whole new dimension to their psychedelic-pop, with even more electronics than the Mellotrons and Farfisas that Chemistry Set fans might be accustomed to. Using instruments and methods old and new, acoustic, electric and electronic, together they were a big surprise at European festivals last year and festival goers enjoyed the extraordinary spectacle of the visual work of VJ Matrona that accompanies the band, who has made installations and visuals in clubs and galleries in New York, London, Barcelona and Buenos Aires, she brings her exquisite modern psychedelic imagery in a nod to atmosphere of UFO club in London in the 1960’s.

In the summer of 2012 the group again played European festivals and in-between returned to their laboratory to demo songs for a new album. Three of the songs: “Time To Breathe”, “Come Kiss Me Vibrate And Smile” and their cover of Tomorrow’s “Hallucinations” was released as a limited edition 7” vinyl single by Fruits de Mer records in October 2012, the single was sold out within 48 hours.

In May 2013 they won the inaugural “Eurovision Psych Contest” organised by Brandish TV as a bit of fun but the psychedelic scientists still received more votes than the young psych flavour of the month Jacco Gardner. As “Citylifers” magazine said…. “The Chemistry Set can – and should – count themselves as part of a long, illustrious line of gently psychedelic guitar pop bands”.

In 2014 The Chemistry Set appeared on the critically acclaimed 3 CD box set tribute to Pink Floyd; "The Many Faces Of Pink Floyd" Other artists included members of King Crimson and The Doors. The boys returned to the laboratory in the spring of 2014 to record more songs for the next album and 2 singles for Fruits de Mer records. The first single will be covers of “Love” to form part of a box set of singles entitled “7 & 7 is” to be released in September. The second single “Elapsed Memories” will be released in November and is a sneak peak of the new material that will be in the new album.
