James M Carson

About: James M Carson

Born in Bolton, James. M. Carson is a hard edged folk singer-songwriter who has been predominantly touring the Greater Manchester scene for past two years. Carson's regular slots in Manchester venues, as part of the increasingly popular House of Cards productions, recently led to a supporting slot with the Bluetones' Mark Morriss. His involvement in the Liverpool music scene and the promoters there [T2F] has provided equally impressive guest slots at the famous Lomax venue with singer-songwriter legend Nick Harper.

Interest in his music has spread from its humble local origins to as far as the U.S. and Australia, with some of his material receiving air play on ALL FM and MRO (UK), Shock Pop Radio Show (U.S.) and Sideways through Sound (AU).

A talented musician from an early age, Carson has been writing music since his teens but only recently began channelling his talent into writing music for people other than himself. Carson's path to releasing his first single has been fraught with false dawns. From graduating from University in the Creative Arts to lowly manual labour work in his home town, Bolton, his CV reflects that of a man not content with 9-5 mundanity.

The antithesis of the instant pop star, Carson is slowly building a loyal following and 2014 is looking to be the year that others will get the chance to hear why.
“Nothing is Lost” is Carson's first single and showcases his soaring voice and intricate and luminous guitar arrangements. Influenced by the melodic melancholy and the intimate lyricism of the likes of Neil Young and Elliot Smith, but equally entranced by the power pop hooks of bands such as Teenage Fanclub and their grunge admirers, Nirvana, Carson's first single is a tale of lost souls, a lack of belonging to the modern world and musically it evokes simpler times when the quest for melody was king, and when Laurel Canyon was the place for any songwriter to be.

On the forthcoming four track EP you should expect to hear Beatlesque pop-rock, Americana strum-along storytelling and surf-vibe guitar picking.

Other sighted influences include: Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers; The Beatles; Wilco; Calexico; Ryan Adams; CSN&Y; George Harrison; The Kinks; The Lemonheads; Jeff Buckley; Neil Finn.

Burlap to Cashmere

About: Burlap to Cashmere

Stepping back into the spotlight after a decade away takes an unusually high degree of musical integrity. For folk-rock pioneer Burlap to Cashmere, a band that built a reputation for both exceptional studio projects and as an unyielding touring act in the late ‘90s, that integrity shines through.

In 1998 the band released the critically acclaimed debut Anybody Out There? After a whirlwind of tours, awards and an ever-growing fan base, they did what no one expected. They disappeared.

For more than a decade, a Burlap to Cashmere reunion seemed like wishful thinking. In 2005, tragedy struck when guitarist John Philippidis was beaten and left for dead after a road rage incident near his home in Brooklyn. An extended hospital visit, which included a full month in a coma and radical facial reconstructive surgery, ultimately sparked a band reunion.

In 2010 the band headed into the studio with acclaimed producer Mitchell Froom (Elvis Costello, Paul McCartney, Sheryl Crow, Tom Waits) to begin work on new material. His rules were simple: “There would be no nudging and no Auto-Tuning. We’re going into this to capture everything that’s organic about the band.”

With its core lineup intact – singer/guitarist/songwriter Steven Delopoulos, guitarist John Philippidis, and drummer Theodore Pagano — Burlap to Cashmere returns with renewed focus, drive and energy. “There’s something about family and people you’ve known forever that makes the chemistry happen,” Delopoulos says. “There’s a sense of honesty and trust. That’s Burlap to Cashmere.”

“For me, Burlap to Cashmere is a classic band in the best sense of the word,” says Froom. “From the great songwriting and singing, to the deep and accomplished musicianship, they are absolutely a distinctive band. This is particularly apparent in the songs that incorporate their unique approach to traditional Greek rhythms. All you have to do is listen once to ‘Don't Forget To Write’, and it's abundantly clear - you've never heard anything quite like it. We also set out to make a record that put musical feeling and performance at a premium - live singing and playing, no click tracks, etc. Developing this kind of hybrid sound in the studio was a big challenge for everyone involved, but ultimately, what else do you hope for?"

Recalling the musical intimacy of Cat Stevens, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan and Simon and Garfunkel, coupled with Delopoulos’ introspective and poetic songwriting, the album announces Burlap to Cashmere’s triumphant return in a record that will surprise longtime fans and intrigue the uninitiated.

Fans of modern troubadour outfits like the Avett Brothers and Mumford and Sons will find common ground with Burlap to Cashmere’s output, with the added textures of the Greek and Mediterranean influences further fleshing out the band’s unique take on 21st Century folk-rock music.

Screen Vinyl Image

About: Screen Vinyl Image

Screen Vinyl Image is formed by ex-members of DC shoegazer’s Alcian Blue and are a part of the Virginia shoegaze scene (Ceremony, Skywave, Alcian Blue, The Offering). Their music is a combination of Electronic Psychedelic and Shoegaze, with influences that range from early electronic artists like Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter to recent electronic artists like Rude66 and Legowelt, to shoegaze/ psychedelic bands like Curve, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Loop, Suicide, and My Bloody Valentine.

The band tours constantly and has shared the stage with Ulrich Schnauss, Auburn Lull, The December Sound, A Place To Bury Strangers, A Sunny Day in Glasgow, Adam Franklin and recently did a tour in Japan with their label mates Ceremony. Their live show is often compared by many to Suicide and My Bloody Valentine both in volume levels and intensity and their DIY visuals combined with 2,100 watts of strobes take their audience into a trip of sensory overdrive.

Screen Vinyl Image have released a 5-song EP (The Midnight Sun), a single (Chaser), a split 12 inch (Ceremony/SVI), their debut full length Interceptors, and are releasing in 2010 a 12 inch of remixes (May 2010), the Siberian Eclipse 7 inch on Fan Death Records (June 2010) and the Too Much Speed 7 Inch (summer 2010) on Custom Made Music.

Their albums present a full gamut of the band’s influences, from atmospheric synths, dancy electronic beats, tripped out drones over hypnotic samples, and of course layers of fuzz and guitar over slamming beats.

Long live the new flesh.

The Spires

About: The Spires

The Spires began as a collaboration between Jason Bays (also of Tall Tales & the Silver Lining) and Colleen Coffey, who formed the group in 2004. Drawing from acts like the Velvet Underground, Robyn Hitchcock, and the Kinks, Bays and Coffey put together a handful of drowsy, psychedelia-tinged indie pop tunes and released them on an EP, Amplifier, on their homegrown label Beehouse Records that summer. The duo's first full-length album, Written in a Year with a Lot of Rain, was released in early 2006; another disc, the Sky Sky EP, came out before the year came to a close. The Spires put out an album's worth of Velvet Underground covers via Spaceland Recordings, Spaceland and Part Time Punks Present: The Spires (As the Velvet Underground), one year later. 2008 found the Spires with another release and a new bandmember to boot; bassist Catelyn Kindred was brought on board as the group's third member that summer, and the band released another EP, Look. The Spires' second full-length album, A Way of Seeing, was released the following year

Has a Shadow

About: Has a Shadow

Hailing from Guadalajara, Mexico, “Has a Shadow” are a progressive psychedelic band that take you on a musical trip away from reality into an alternative state of mind. Their debut album “Sky is Hell Black” was released on November 12th, 2013 on Captcha Records to rave reviews by the alternative music industry and fans alike.

“Sky is Hell Black” hits you with a wall of sound that emanates from the darkest corners of the Mexican interior. Listening to this album is like being shrouded in a veil of fog at the moment a massive storm takes over a barren metropolis. The experience of drone gets charged with anticipation when you realize that the storm is about to hit.

The album was recorded through the winter of 2012 in Mexico City, in a house where Remi used to live as a child. Alberto Gonzalez (Beto or “The Obsolete” from Mexican psych duo Lorelle Meets the Obsolete) was responsible for recording and mixing. The band then completed their first tour of the US west coast and will do so again in 2014.

Victor “Remi” Garay plays the bass, Rodolfo Samperio plays guitar, and Daniel Garciano plays guitar and electric organ in addition to providing the vocals. The Obsolete plays drums for the album and contributed guitar tracks to some of the songs.

They have hooked up with Captcha Records, “one of the finest experimental / psych labels around” according to Weed Temple. Captcha has brought you the debut records of Lorelle Meets the Obsolete, onYou, GA’AN, and Dreamsalon in addition to working with Thee Oh Sees, Ty Segall, Phil Cohran and Eddy Current Suppression Ring.

In May 2014, “Has a Shadow” released a 2 song EP titled “Hollow Curve” which continues their foggy dream like psychedelic music style into the future.

The Lucid Dream have also established themselves as a live force across Europe, covering 14 countries within the last 12 months.

The long-awaited debut album, 'Songs Of Lies and Deceit', was released on 5th August 2013 (on CD/download via Holy Are You Recordings, and on limited vinyl via The Great Pop Supplement, who have released the likes of Wooden Shjips, MGMT, Martin Rev (Suicide), Spacemen 3, Spectrum). The initial vinyl pressing of 500 copies sold out within 3 days.

Critical acclaim for the album was received from Uncut, Q, Clash, The Quietus, The Skinny, leading French magazine 'Les Inrocks', and Stuart Maconie's 'Freak Zone' on BBC 6 Music, to name a few. The album coincided with shows at the likes of Jodrell Bank Live (to an audience of 5,000), a hugely successful slot at the Liverpool International Festival Of Psychedelia, and a headline tour throughout Europe.

Dragonfly Tattoo

About: Dragonfly Tattoo

With a blissfully deep and often dark musical repertoire to explore, Vicky Whelan and her new band Dragonfly Tattoo Rob Coxon on guitar, drummer John, cellist Jonny Lindsey, Paul Bagnall on bodhran, Helen Alexander on french horn), combine passionate and powerful melodies with wry and insightful lyrics to great effect.

A musician musicians will enjoy, Vicky’s classical schooling weaves through her music yet doesn’t define it – she twists the expected to delight the ear with epic songs of surprising maturity and completeness. For someone who cites Beth Gibbons and PJ Harvey as her muses, Vicky is more diverse than her tastes would suggest.

From eerie smouldering vocals on “Lilith”, lilting jazz on Two Wrongs to sleazy blues on “Love Feels Like Murder” Vicky’s songs are enjoyable on first listening, but delve further, and the sublime humour and exquisite storytelling come to the fore. The music ranges from haunting vocals over thumping drums to the full force of a funky 5 piece that knows its stuff. A regular at gigs across the North including; Dragongate Festival, Harrogate Fringe Festival, Grassington Festival, Oporto, Verve and Aglassto in Leeds and the Blues Bar in Harrogate, and featuring on ‘On t’Sofa.com, Chapel FM and Tempo FM radio, Vicky’s attraction lies in being both experimental and timeless – a truly rare combination.

“Dragonfly Tattoo creates laid back Bluesy progressive music with a hint of psychedelic that entices the listener into a state of consciousness and free flowing thought within…very dreamy music that will resonate with music fans everywhere.” ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music

The Spring Folk Orchestra

About: The Spring Folk Orchestra

From “Alps next to Geneva”, Rhône-Alpes, France, “The Spring Folk Orchestra” are Musicians from different generations but with common musical influences that narrate, through music, the story of their times. They are an acoustic folk group with no concession or compromise, and are sober and deserving as tradition calls for. Their music flows like a breath of fresh air to carry the listener off into a world where music ushers in an atmosphere of sanity away from agitation and noise…

The SPRING FOLK ORCHESTRA started in the spring of 2006 and have evolved over time into the exceptional band we hear today.

Music Releases:

In the fall of 2013, the “Spring Folk Orchestra” began work in their home studio on a 9 song album titled “Nine Songs” and released it in February 2014 on Bandcamp which gained them recognition in music circles for their catchy folk and bluesy country sounds.

Riding the positive energy from “Nine Songs” the group then quickly followed up their album with a 3 song EP titled “Enter the Road”, which further demonstrated their broad and diverse influences from the earlier folk rock era’s of the late 60’s and early 70’s…but with a lyrical twist of today’s reality.

Sincere and honest, the “Spring Folk Orchestra” combines their own style with a reflection of influences from many artists of the past including such notables as Kerouac, Jerehmia Johnson, Corso, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, America, Crosby Stills and Nash to Van Morrisson, via Hank Williams, Merle Travis, the Statler Brothers, Leadbelly and the rockabilly pioneers, from Elvis to Johnny Cash.

“The Spring Folk Orchestra are worthy artists of the folk music genre that continue the journey passed on by artists of the past to move this great music genre into the future. Very enjoyable music indeed.” ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music

Jason Rubenstein

About: Jason Rubenstein

Jason Rubenstein has been writing and producing music since 1995. His latest release, “New Metal From Old Boxes” is a return to his progressive-rock roots with a loud, heavy, energetic and modern suite of instrumentals that evoke King Crimson, ELP, NiN, and classical music.

Written, performed and produced by Jason, it is a change in style from his previous mixed-genre CDs. “I love progressive rock.”, Jason said, “I grew up on it, and I was in a prog-rock band in the 80s, back when prog really was not cool. Recently, I needed to hear new music that carries forward the heavier, 20th-century-classical progressive-rock sound. It was a challenge; nothing felt quite right to me. For “New Metal From Old Boxes”, I just wrote what I felt, and used a limited set of classic textures: piano, Hammond B3, huge drums, Oberheim and Moog synthesizers, and bass & guitar.”

“New Metal From Old Boxes” features classic, loud rock production and a movie-like tension-filled soundtrack vibe. Imagine if King Crimson, ELP, NiN, Wendy Carlos, and Philip Glass got together to score the soundtrack for a heist movie.

Jason Rubenstein’s music has been heard on National Public Radio, NBC Television, Soma.fm, and in the film “Replicant”. In 2000, he was featured in an EQ magazine article “Adventures in Sound Design”, and his sound design was used in ABC’s television series “Lost”. In March of 2014, Jason released an EP titled “This is Not a Love Letter”.

“New Metal From Old Boxes” is his sixth release

Rubenstein, who’d previously worked as a software engineer at Google and at Pono Music, suddenly found himself unemployed in late 2013. He started working on “New Metal For Old Boxes” the next day, writing one song per day for 30 days. “I’d been running the engineering for Pono Music for three years when the whole project hit its nadir. We all got laid-off. The very next day, at 7am, I fired up my home studio and started writing music. No wasting time. I wrote one song every day, not worrying about whether it was any good - I just wrote whatever I wanted to hear. Every day, I literally asked myself ‘What do I want to hear? What am I feeling right now?’ and I went and wrote whatever that was.”, Jason said. “A lot of the process for writing came from the process for writing genre fiction: ‘What happens? And what happens next? And what happens after that?’. Every song tells a story of some sort, regardless of whether it has lyrics. My songs don’t have lyrics, but they’re either stories, or a series of vignettes, or a scene. For example, there’s a story about a heist in there, and one about a barbarian horde storming-in from the steppes. I’m a genre-fiction geek, what can I say. And I didn’t give a damn what anyone else thought about the music. As long as I liked it, I was happy. I trust my taste in music - I figure that if I like it, there will be others out there who will as well.”

The music is heavy, cinematic, relentless. There is not one ballad or slow-moving track on the 12-song album. Even the breakdowns are heavy, like moments of Steely Dan with King Crimson’s terrifying rhythm section. “The mix engineer, Niko Bolas, called the project ‘Jason-R-Schizo’ on the first day of mixing. My everyday personality doesn’t match the music. It’s a divide - there’s my meet-me-on-the-street personality where I try to be as decent a human being as I can, and my musical personality, which is heavy, dark, brooding, angry. I’m pretty sure that if I didn’t make this music, my personality would start to corrode. I’d be a short, angry man yelling at clouds and dogs and minivans.”

Jason’s history is uncommon for a child of the 1970s. He discovered computers at the same time he discovered synthesizers. “While that’s common for children these days, in 1975 both computers and synths were rare.”, he said. His elementary school had an IBM computer terminal where he and his friends taught themselves FORTRAN, a computer programming language. A neighbor owned an Arp Odyssey monophonic synthesizer, and a school field-trip brought Jason face-to-face with a giant Moog modular synthesizer. “When I was 4 years old, I discovered my parent’s stereo and an LP of “Switched-On Bach” by Wendy (at the time Walter) Carlos. It blew my little mind. So coming face-to-face with the type of machine that made those sounds was life-changing. I knew right then that I needed to make music with one of these monsters.” The combination of technology and music came naturally to him, and the local record store became a source of education. He bought and borrowed LPs by Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, ELO, ELP, Rush, Yes, Jean-Luc Ponty, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Gary Burton, The Beatles, Black Sabbath, Steve Miller, Kraftwerk, Bruford, Allan Holdsworth, King Crimson, Brian Eno, Peter Gabriel. Then a degree in computer science, a gig with a Chicago-area progressive rock band (“We sounded too much like Rush and not enough like ourselves”), jobs as a consulting programmer for Fortune-500 companies, and music school at night. “I’d hang out until 4am with the jazz & rock students from school at Chicago jazz clubs. How the hell I made it to work the next morning is still a mystery to me.”, Jason said. Finally leaving Chicago for Los Angeles in 1995 after failing to get traction in the local music scene, he produced his first CD in 1996, and the second in 1998. These were eclectic, downtempo rock/electronic/jazz projects that immediately opened doors for him to produce music for television and film.

It took ten years for Rubenstein to get back to creating music and produce “New Metal For Old Boxes”. “For a long time, I wasn't writing music for myself”, he said, “and it turns out that was a problem. For a few years I was writing what I thought other people wanted to hear, or writing what a media producer needed for a deadline. And the music I was writing had nothing to do with what I was feeling, or with what I loved to hear. So I got away from it in 2004 and started a software company, and then moved to San Francisco, and then had the opportunity to work at Google, and then with Neil Young on Pono Music. It was an incredible experience to do all of that, but now it’s time to have new experiences creating new music. Through all of that geekery I learned to just write the music that I wanted to hear and feel. I need to keep getting it out of my system, and it turns out that I'm simply unable to quit music. A ten-year break was too long. It’s either I keep creating music like this, or I start standing on the streetcorner and yell at the clouds and the passing hipsters.”
