Sleeping Orchard

About: Sleeping Orchard

Sleeping Orchard are a Canadian psychedelic band that have appeared on the music radar with a smooth laid back mix of sounds spanning the folk, blues and Psychedelic sounds of today.

Their first album “Skinny Tales for Fat Folks” is a seven song EP that was released on Bandcamp in November 2013. Right from the first song, “Sofia Rodriguez” the listener is drawn into a sleepy bluesy folk music with an added twist of psychedelic that brings to mind the early days of Pink Floyd.

Sleeping Orchard then released their second EP on Bandcamp in February 2014, a four song EP called, “II” which continues to show their evolution of bluesy Folk but with more of a psychedelic rock influence. “II” is certainly a breakout EP for the band with “I Hope I’m Going Somewhere” leading their sound onto the Indie airwaves to become a fan favourite. Stay tuned for more Sleeping Orchard!

Heylel

About: Heylel

Born in the fall of 2012, Heylel present themselves as an alternative prog rock band with a gothic twist. The Portuguese quartet aim to recapture the essence of old school Progressive Rock, whilst adding their very personal touch. The outcome is a dark, atmospheric and involving sound.

Heylel enjoy creative freedom, meaning they avoid connections with any particular music style but rather direct their energy towards creating emotional connections and passing messages to the audience, regardless of the melodic approach they feel appropriate for each story. This happens mostly because of the diverse art background that each band member provides.

The author, Narciso Monteiro, former student of Porto's Jazz School, was also the guitar player and co-founder of The Gama GT Blues Project, a Portuguese original only blues band with two released records. In "Nebulae" he recorded guitars, bass and keyboards. He is recently also working in other contemporary art projects, like sound tracking Hans Richter's "Two pence magic", for the 2013 edition of the Amares animation and experimental cinema festival.

Ana Batista, the lead singer, has a strong classical and church choir instruction, providing the band with a soft angelical tone, turning every song into a balanced experience between power and smoothness.

Filipe Braga is in charge of the drums but his established and recognized career as a photographer also places him as the main image coordinator, in order to complete the audio experience with a visual component. His contribution with the pictures that relate with each song, which can be seen in the record booklet, provide a visual art complement to the band's "more than music" concept on this release.

Nebulae

The band's debut album is undoubtedly inspired by its creator, quest for enlightenment and meaning. "Nebulae" is a conceptual vision over life and death, represented in the form of a star life-cycle. The record is presented with eleven tracks divided into four chapters, from a star birth until its extinction, creating intense emotional passages through life's stages.

"Nebulae" delivers a strong, dark but yet hopeful atmospheric sound, sometimes almost resembling a movie soundtrack.
It combines all their progressive rock influences, including a cover for King Crimson's "I talk to the wind" and ELP's "The Sage", with more contemporary alternative sounds, ranging from the exploding power of "The Prophet" and the ultra heavy guitars on "Watcher of the Light", to smooth and peaceful sounds like "Deeper" or "Wings of Eternity", with this last one resembling also baroque influences.

Marlon Dean Clift

About: Marlon Dean Clift

A wide range composer and performer that doesn’t believe in genres but in music.

My music is for the masses and for individuals. Utopian? No. The problem we face today is the poor musical education of the masses, in the figurative or literal through the labeling applied to artists and their work. All supports a good head, is a statement that I sold long ago.

Today, the musical discussion tends to be poor and capricious, based on anecdotal rather than on technical or conceptual; and even on that basis, poor terms are released in form and substance. But I’m not delving into anything.

The music press is the best example of that aridity in music education. It leads by invoking references or comparisons. Artists are granted identity in this popular form and denied the unknown. That is the great absurdity of the music industry bubble: The vast majority of musicians and music lovers are indoctrinated to label categories, because they are highly permeable and conditioned…But that is not the only Great Cultural Problem; Just Boast of rebellion and all that underlies the natural state of things when submitting music to the social cultural environment and you will find that all preliminary agreements and contacts are out the window.

And for all this I have reached that wonderful point of maturity where you know the drill, distinguish, authenticate…Culture offers a playground game, where you simulate infinite intelligence and virtue but that has never interested me, and so one should really not be interested if one seeks real development, especially when one is figured to be considered socially wrong.

Masic as Expression

Do you really understand what you hear? I ask myself daily, why I do what I do and not what those who judge me do. Judges watch from the sidelines, pretending to participate in Art when they really only repress the impulse that feeds it. They judge and think they can coerce music to their influence.

The artist is not a servant, the artist is one who seeks when filled with wonder and vision and creates without questioning.

All this has been said before and better, I say it because I just need to remember it Everyday, if possible…

Alexi Murdoch

About: Alexi Murdoch

Critically acclaimed singer-songwriter Alexi Murdoch's second recording, Towards the Sun, follows his 2006 breakout indie release, Time Without Consequence. Murdoch's debut cemented him as a Top Ten Artist to Watch in Rolling Stone, gained him five stars from Alternative Press, and was hailed as "a timeless record that's likely to endure" by NPR Music. Fiercely independent, and supported by a word of mouth groundswell, Murdoch chose to self-release Time Without Consequence. It has to date sold over 100,000 copies -- and continues to sell briskly almost a half decade after initial release.

Though his second record has had a long gestation, Murdoch's reputation as a serious musical force has been growing apace. With no marketing and little fanfare, his debut quietly became one of the most licensed albums of the decade, receiving placements in countless films and television shows, making Murdoch one of those rare artists who is known primarily for how his music actually sounds. (He has also made multiple appearances on prominent radio outlets like KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic, WXPN's World Café, WNYC's Soundcheck, Minnesota Public Radio's The Current, and Seattle's KEXP.) Most recently Murdoch was tabbed by director Sam Mendes to helm the soundtrack for the acclaimed 2009 indie film Away We Go, contributing nine songs alongside songs by the Velvet Underground, Bob Dylan, George Harrison & the Stranglers.

Murdoch tape-recorded the majority of Towards the Sun in Vancouver in a single night while on tour in North America in 2009. Revisiting the tape months later in a basement studio in Brooklyn the arrangements were kept poignantly spare; calling on a small handful of local musicians, the record was finished in a few days. The result is a compellingly stark and raw document of quiet, visceral folk songs that are at once dark and immediate.

Kikagaku Moyo

About: Kikagaku Moyo

Kikagaku Moyo started in the summer of 2012 busking on the streets of Tokyo.
Though the band started as a free music collective, it quickly evolved into a tight group of multi-instrumentalists.

Kikagaku Moyo call their sound psychedelic because it encompasses a broad spectrum of influence. Their music incorporates elements of classical Indian music, Krautrock, Traditional Folk, and 70s Rock. Most importantly their music is about freedom of the mind and body and building a bridge between the supernatural and the present. Improvisation is a key element to their sound.

2016 Album: House in the Tall Grass

Like a long journey this record unfolds itself through many layers. Fans of Kikagaku Moyo will be comforted by the soft vocals harmonies and warm Sitar but what sets this release apart is the refinement of the band’s songwriting and their delicate execution.

Side A begins with a pair of travelling songs where the interplay between the vocals, guitar, and sitar lift and suspend you on an unexpected journey.

The patient listener is rewarded by tracks like “Trad” and “Silver Owl” that demonstrate the masterful balance the band has between soft and loud; chaos and order, or being both cold and tender at the same time.

“House in the Tall Grass” takes the listener by the hand on a comfortable quest through destinations both familiar and unknown. It is a natural step forward for the band and perhaps the most refined example of their style to date.

Current line up is
Vocal/Guitar: Tomo Katsurada
Guitar: Daoud Popal
Sitar: Ryu Kurosawa
Bass: Kotsuguy
Drums/Voice: Go Kurosawa... more

Gareth Icke

About: Gareth Icke

Gareth has just finished writing his third album, and has recorded the opening single, ‘Get your love on’ at Studio 5a, on the Isle of Wight.

He is touring the new material single across the UK, before releasing the single to coincide with his second Wembley Arena performance, in October.

Gareth’s second album, A Brand New Battle, was released by Manchester based label, Eromeda Entertainment.

The first single off the album, titled ‘Remember Who You Are’ was greatly received and has already racked up almost 200,000 hits on You Tube.

So far in 2013, he performed at the Isle of Wight Festival, where he was approached to perform on The Voice, an ITV Music talent show. He turned it down and instead, embarked on a 14 date tour of the Scottish Islands.

“Gareth Icke is a talented young singer/songwriter who writes well crafted songs of deep intelligence and sensitivity who has been making a name for himself on the grass roots circuit.” John Robb, Louder Than War

“This man has the world in his hands, and I for one wouldn’t count him out of world domination, he is that good.” Sonic Observer

“The post punk pop (of Remember who you are) is a well produced showcase of Icke’s talent as a songwriter, not only is the melody one that wouldn’t sound out of place on national radio but the song is musically quite playful, employing pauses, breakdowns and a bridge that Coldplay or U2 would be proud of.” Vectis Radar

A bitter sweet album full of emotion and thought provoking lyrics, Gareth proves here that he is a major emerging songwriter, his music can stand up against the biggest names in the industry.Cool Manchester

A Brand New Battle was recorded on the Isle of Wight at Studio 5a.

In 2012 Gareth played the Bestival, the Isle of Wight Festival, and a massive 6000 people sell out show at Wembley Arena.

He has struggled to tour until the summer, after suffering a horrendous double broken leg while playing football. After surgery and months of rest, Gareth is ready to get back on the road.

Gareth was a founding member of the rock band Kody. He played several tours and Festivals across the UK and also, a two week tour of America where the band achieved a large amount of their success. The band split and Gareth became a solo artist in 2008.

In December 2009, he released his debut album ‘It gets worse at night’ through Icon Records. The 10 track album was recorded and produced by Dan Swift (Kasabian, Snow Patrol, Aqualung) and received great reviews upon its release.

The album was released on iTunes, Amazon, Play etc all across the World.

“his voice is both soothing and plaintive and moves most powerfully when the music falls back into the quietude of simple guitar picking for accompaniment; creating the kind of ambivalent tension reminiscent of a Lord Byron poem or a David Sedaris essay. Even when he’s singing about the kind of loneliness that gets worse at night, there’s a strange hopefulness in his voice that reassures things will all work out alright in the end.” - Jasmine Anderson , Biocritics.

“The problem with being a failed musician is that whenever you find yourself listening to pure talent you feel jealous and perhaps a little nauseous as you realise that you’ll never be that good. As a failed musician, when I listen to Gareth Icke, I feel like I’m in the throes of death…..but it’s a happy death.” - Alex Baker, KERRANG!

Gareth has toured tirelessly over the past few years taking him as far a field as the USA. He has played Top festivals including The Isle of Wight festival, Norway’s Quart Festival, The Festival Scene Des Brassage & Festival Sors De Chez Toi, both in France, as well as many UK tours.

The records opening track, ‘It Feels Like A Race’ was championed by radio stations all over the Country including Kerrang Radio, BBC 6 Music and Steve Wright’s Afternoon show on BBC Radio 2. The songs music video has now reached over 65,000 youtube hits.

Gareth was regularly headlining top London venues such as the Borderline, South of the Border and The Barfly. In 2010, Gareth completed a national UK tour, a ten date tour in Germany and played two great festivals in France. He also completed his 4th Liberty Tour along with Alan Frew and Jono. The Liberty Tour is a collective of the best independant acoustic artists. It puts them together and sends them out on tours across Britain and Europe.

Jim Cook

About: Jim Cook

As a teenager, Jim Cook wanted one thing: to play guitar like Eddie Van Halen. But that changed when his high school girlfriend started toying with his heart. Annoyed and confused, Jim turned to his guitar and wrote his first song.

Tales of romantic frustration continue to fuel much of Jim Cook’s music, and his debut single, “Chasin’ You,” is no exception. It compares his ambivalent lover’s unexpected return to a shark attack.

The single was produced by Dirk Lance, a founding member of Incubus. Lance also lends his talents on bass to the track, and is joined by Incubus drummer José Pasillas. As Cook’s vocals and guitar swim atop the veteran players’ groove, the result sounds something like Jason Mraz jamming with Jamiroquai.

Jim Cook will embark on a solo acoustic tour in support of the single, with dates in Los Angeles, San Diego, and other coastal California cities to be announced. His live shows are energetic and entertaining, with original songs ranging in style from quirky Americana to funky acoustic pop.

Based in Los Angeles, Cook is a native of Ohio. While in the Midwest, Cook honed his chops as songwriter and lead vocalist for touring alt/pop band The Big Creak. The band’s performance of Cook’s “23” is featured in the opening credits of Winter Break (Universal, 2003), and other songs from its catalog have been heard on HBO, VH-1, Discovery and more.

“Chasin’ You” is Jim Cook’s first official release since 2004, and first-ever release as a solo artist. Cook will perform for the remainder of this year and plans to release an EP in 2014.

League of Wolves

About: League of Wolves

League of Wolves are Dillon Currie (vocals, guitar), Ethan Stork (bass), Aspen Beveridge (vocals, guitar), and Greig Beveridge (drums, vocals). They were brought up in the small town of Maple Creek, Saskatchewan - the 'Gateway to the Cypress Hills'. During high school they had come up with songs while jamming in each other's basements, but they hadn't taken the creation of a band too seriously. Soon after high school, Greig, Dillon and Ethan went seperate ways and Aspen had spent time living in Banff and Saskatoon. Ethan went to college in Alberta, Dillon played junior hockey in northern Alberta and Greig moved out to Maple Ridge, B.C. However, a few years later everyone made the decision to come together and the band was formed.

Over the course of 2011, their sound started to take shape. Although they grinded through freshly learned covers of Johnny Cash, Ray Charles and The Beatles, the bands mannerisms and delivery on stage had started to reflect their rock heroes. Influences from Sam Roberts Band, Kings of Leon, Cage the Elephant and Queens of the Stone Age helped bring an edge and volatility to their sound while still allowing room for rich melodies and harmonies. Although 2011 was a big step, the band considers the spring of 2012, to be their official start. They moved in together and began to pursue music seriously - with a new sense of solidarity. As a result, they had caught the eyes and ears of some of the city's top bands, and have since played shows with Gunner 'n' Smith, The Rebellion, Zachary Lucky, The Pistolwhips, Make Liars, Bass Invaders, Karpinka Brothers and many more. After finding their way onto stages around Saskatoon and playing Summer Invasion Festival in Regina, the band began booking small tours which brought them to towns like Kyle, Hazlet, Prince Albert and Swift Current in the rural spans of the province.

The growing amount of shows seemed to give the band more confidence and with it, original works started to be written. The bands first single, Straight Shot was mastered at Gateway Mastering by Grammy-winning Adam Ayan and was officially released on May 31, 2013. League of Wolves have since recorded an EP called The Motions (under former band name The Shoeless Joes). The Motions is a collection of high-energy, melody-driven rock songs with catchy hooks that make it very hard not to sing along. The EP was mastered by Rob Beaton of RKS Mastering in Los Angeles, California and was released on August 23rd. It debuted at #3 on local CFCR's radio charts and reached #2 which was held for multiple weeks. In order to promote the EP, the band toured Western Canada throughout August and September of 2013 and were well received by venues from Saskatoon to Vancouver. The band is currently working on a full length album and will be touring across Canada soon!

Decadents

About: Decadents

Decadents were founded in Champaign Illinois in early 2010 but it wasn’t until October 2012 that the current formation began performing together. Mike Carpenter (guitar, vocals) and Mike Solomon (guitar) were in search of a new rhythm section after the release of the Decadents self titled debut album in September 2012. Shortly thereafter, Ben Davidson (drums) and Allen Beebe (Bass) joined the group.

Performing throughout Champaign-Urbana, Central Illinois, and Chicago over the next 18 months, Decadents tightened and evolved their sound significantly and began working on new material to showcase their new form. The Decadents will release their second album “Elegantly Wasted” in June 2014, and it promises to be a chart topper.

Second Hand Heart

About: Second Hand Heart

Arresting, soulful and raw in its execution, Second Hand Heart's album “Tides” is a self-assured debut release where melodies sprout from a nocturnal mood with a disarming intensity. A collection of neo-folk compositions, Tides speaks of longing, truth and courage.

Critical acclaim has been simmering for the quintet, receiving solid airplay across Australian community radio and on Triple J, UK glossies to Australian dailies to international blogs:

“cinematic… lush… delicate… serene… emotive… dynamic… integral… chilling… vibrant… moving… breathtakingly intimate…stunning… simmers… climactic…sensory bliss”

Following the release and sell-out launch of band’s first EP in 2011, Second Hand Heart tested the waters recording catchy alt-pop song ‘Trouble’, in a makeshift studio in Balwyn in 2012. “Our perspective changed over time… in the beginning we started to mix with crisp and polished production in mind. As we got deeper into the recording process, we realised that we wanted to capture the feeling with all it’s organic faults and flaws” says guitarist John Waller.

Tides fuses intricate instrumentation with splashes of delay and washes of cymbals. In 2013 Second Hand Heart reached a new level of musical maturity when they arranged their live set to be played with a string quintet made up of players from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra (MSO) curated for Melbourne Music Week.

As a band, Second Hand Heart are a cohesive unit. Tides are a force. Hold your breath. It will draw you in.

Since inception, Melbourne’s Second Hand Heart has worked hard to be everywhere at once. Earning comparisons to Big Scary and Sarah Blasko, critical acclaim has been simmering for the young quintet. It’s to be expected: “the tandem act between the front women works wonderfully, and plays a large part in the band's appeal'' (Faster Louder, AUS) as they create “a somewhat dark, haunting yet at times quite captivating listening experience that grows on you the more you hear” (Maverick Magazine, UK).

Their haunting sound has not only earned an audience, but has rewarded the band with great opportunities, including a show alongside French super-group Nouvelle Vagues’ front woman Nadeah and a ‘Tunesday’ feature in Frankie Magazine. They have performed with Art of Sleeping, Battleships, Ainslie Wills, Saskwatch and established acts Hunting Grounds, Holly Throsby and Kate Miller-Heidke. It’s been a busy few years for the band, a group poised to make a serious impact.
