Bob Crawford, born in the Bronx, NY, is one of those rare people who combines musicality, scholarship, and business acumen into one seamless individual. After graduating from the University of Virginia in 1971 (Phi Beta Kappa/Magna cum laude) Bob embarked on his musical career full time. From being the Musical Director, Guitarist, and Vocalist for the National Company of Paul Sills' "Story Theatre"(1972-3) to the publishing of his music theory book "Symmetric Cycles" (Foreward by Mick Taylor-Rolling Sones/John Mayall) by RMCO MUSIC/Charles Colin Publications, Bob has been actively involved in songwriting, arranging, producing, and studio work as a guitarist and vocalist for the past 30 years.

In 1975, Bob founded Josandra Rehearsal Studios in NYC which became the home of such celebrated musicians as Pat Martino, Larry Harlow, Sonny Rollins, Horace Silver, Mongo Santamaria, Slide Hampton, Sam Jones, Tom Harrell, Kevin Eubanks, Larry Coryell, John Abercrombie, Brand X, Tom Rush, John Hammond, Aztec 2 Step, Jocelyn Brown, Meat Loaf, Loretta Devine, and Roz Ryan among many others.

In 1986 he acted as President of Lions' Den Recording in NYC until 1990 when he formed RMCO MUSIC, his full-service production, recording, publishing, and consulting company. Still active today RMCO MUSIC boasts such varied clients as Larry Harlow, Mick Taylor, Jocelyn Brown, Maxine Brown, Ron Richardson, Vickilyn Reynolds, Carl Hall, Beverly Crosby, and Vondie Curtis-Hall.

In 1991, Larry Harlow (2008 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award Winner and Latin Music Hall of Fame Member) recorded "My Time Is Now"("Mi Tiempo Llego") on the album of the same name, co-written by Bob Crawford and A. Dennis (Doc) Williams of the O'Jays released on Cache/Fania Records.

In 2006, Maxine Brown (R&B Hall of Fame Member and Tony Award Winner) recorded anther of Bob's compositions "I Want To Be Loved" released on "From The Heart" (Mee Max Music, Inc.) He continues to write, publish, and place songs with other artists to this day.

Brian MacKey

Brian Mackey is spreading a message of honesty to fans across the country with his eclectic blend of pop-rock and folk-inspired lyrics. “My songwriting is really just an autobiographical musical,” muses the New York based artist. “Ironically enough, I've never been a fan of musicals.”

Mackey released his 4th release and first full length album, "Broken Heartstrings" this on November 10th, 2014 (With pre-sale on iTunes November 4th). This release was co-produced by Brian and his long-time producer Sam Ashworth, who also produced his Honest Love EP, as well as several other songs on his "Red EP". Earlier this year, in honor of Earth Day, Mackey released his single, "America", on April 22nd, which also is included on "Broken Heartstrings."

While 'Broken Hearstrings' was two years in the making, Mackey comments about his ups and downs of the process:

"A lot of loss went on around me during the entire process of making this album, both negatively and positively. The name of it came about from my need to break away from an oppressive relationship that tried to make me feel guilty during the entire time. I decided that it would be appropriate to name this new release 'Broken Heartstrings”. Not that my heart is broken - just the opposite; the bond has been broken, the stuff that holds you back, a liberation, a new beginning."

“This album is about putting aside all fears of saying the wrong thing,” he explains. “It’s about putting the rose colored glasses on the floor and smashing them with your foot, and feeling comfortable with the uncomfortable." Standouts on the project include "Desire", "Are You Listening","Philadelphia" and "The Day."

Some of Music City’s finest singer/songwriter/musicians have joined Brian on his projects: producer/singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth, son of songwriter and producer Charlie Peacock (Civil Wars, Switchfoot, Amy Grant) and Six Pence None The Richer’s guitarist Matt Slocum. On his upcoming album, "Broken Heartstrings", famed guitarist Jeff King (Reba McEntire, Carrie Underwood) and bass player, Mark Hill (Keith Urban, Reba McEntire) both recorded with Mackey.

In addition to his new album, Mackey spent the summer shooting his new music video for his single "America" with friend and frequent director, Nick Cavalier and photographer, Andrea Coan. Releasing on October 24th, CMT Edge exclusively premiered this new video with a Q &A.

Past Releases

Honest Love was Mackey’s third EP. His first EP, Feng Shui for Slobs, was released in 2008 and the second was Brian Mackey Red released in 2009. Brian's first EP, Feng Shui for Slobs, garnered the placement of "Painted Red" on the Disney TV show, Naturally Sadie, a milestone achievement for his first EP.

Honest Love was so well received that songs from the project were featured on Viso Music, US Airways In-Flight Radio, and the Songs of Love for Japan compilation, alongside stars like Sara Bareilles and Ani DiFranco. Mackey was also recently selected as a SuperCuts® Rock the Cut Artist Ambassador.

Mackey’s songs, including “Color Blue” and “Honest Love,” have also been sought out for use in motion pictures The Boys of Abu Ghraib, starring Sara Paxton (Last House on the Left) and Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings); 29,000 Wishes, 1 Regret, directed by Oliver Robins (Poltergeist); Fake; and Fathoms Deep. "Honest Love" also garnered some advertising and TV placements: Unicef's "Live Below the Line" campaign, and "Out on the Road" in Travel Channel's, "The Layover" with Anthony Bourdain.

“'Color Blue’ was written in a few different places,” says Mackey. “It started out as a guitar song, after the basic idea came from looking out my car window in the wintertime. I brought the idea back into the house, worked on it there, and then put it out of my mind. Later I went down to Nashville to record a different set of songs. On my break I noticed a grand piano in the church, which was converted into a studio, and finished the rest of the song on the piano and ended up recording it.”

Whether it is a winter view through a car window or a morning sunrise, Mackey finds inspiration everywhere. “There are so many experiences in life that you use to paint your picture. It could be the smell of the air, or a look in the eyes of somebody that you meet along the way. It could be a conversation with an old friend. It could be a TV show. It could be a powerful romantic thing or something funny. It could be somebody dying or somebody being born.”

The Florida native’s influences are as varied as his inspirations. Mackey, a classical pianist, loves modern masters Bob Dylan, Jim Croce and The Beatles as much as composers Mozart and Beethoven.

The album was completed at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, GA with mixing by David Barbe (Bob Mould, DriveByTruckers) and mastering by Drew Vandenberg (WidespreadPanic, DriveByTruckers). "Songs the Belt Taught Us" was released April 27th 2011. It has since been lauded by reviewers as one of the "best rock albums of the year...". Described as “dazzling” by the New York Times, Makana is an internationally acclaimed guitarist, singer, and composer who is widely known for lending his musical talent for social change. His guitar playing has been featured on three Grammy-nominated albums, including the soundtrack of the Academy-Award winning film “The Descendants”. In 2011, at the apex of the “Occupy” movement, Makana’s song We Are the Many went viral on YouTube garnering more than half a million views and was coined the “Occupy Anthem” by Rolling Stone Magazine. His performance of the song at an APEC World Leaders’ Dinner hosted by the Obamas also went viral and became the #1 news story on Yahoo worldwide for two days, garnering appearances on CNN, BBC, ABC, Democracy Now!, Sean Hannity and other major news outlets. Makana’s captivating and wide-ranging performance style has led him to share the stage with Jason Mraz and Jack Johnson, open for music legends Sting, Carlos Santana and Elvis Costello, and perform in venues ranging from Asian and European opera houses to The White House.

Born and raised in Hawai’i, Makana grew up on the shores of Waikiki amid the likes of legend Don Ho and young Elvis-impersonator Bruno Mars. Makana- whose name means “a gift given freely”- began singing when he was seven years-old, took up ‘ukulele at nine and began learning the ancient art of slack key at eleven. By fourteen, he was performing professionally, and before long playing five nights a week. His reputation as the youngest virtuoso of slack key spread like molten volcanic lava throughout the islands.

A protégé of the Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar legends, including Bobby Moderow Jr. and the late master Uncle Sonny Chillingworth, Makana has dedicated his life to perpetuating as well as evolving the traditional Hawaiian art form. Slack key or Ki Ho’alu, nearly 200 years old and indigenous to Hawai’i, was created by ‘ohana (families) on the different islands as a very personal folk music expression of their beautiful surroundings and way of life. The style is characterized by “slacking” the strings to open chords, thus freeing the hands to alter the sound whilst self-accompanying with a triad of alternating bass patterns, faux rhythms and sweet melodies evocative of island atmospheres. Think “three guitars in one!” From this tradition Makana has evolved his own dynamic, high-octane style, coined “Slack Rock”: slack key infused with elements of bluegrass, rock, blues and raga. Makana’s playing has garnered praise from such guitar luminaries as Kirk Hammett (Metallica) and Pepe Romero (Spanish Flamenco Master). A contributor to the 2007 Grammy-nominated “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Vol. I” and 2009 Grammy-nominated “Hawaiian Slack Key Kings Vol II”, Makana is considered one of the “greatest living players” (Esquire Magazine) whose “instrumental brilliance bears comparison with the work of such groundbreaking acoustic guitarists as John Fahey and Michael Hedges” (Maui News).

The focus of Makana’s art is to celebrate the beauty of tradition while exploring new, relevant perceptions, sounds and themes. In his music he often honors his forebears, the vintage Hawaiian music legends as well as the rock poet idols of the 60s, paying homage to the kupuna (elders) who carry within their Beings the cultural wisdom passed down through generations.

Makana is also very active in building and nurturing community and awareness in the fields of food and nutrition, land, social engineering strategies, health and spiritual growth. His hobbies include growing food and sowing clarity through philosophy on his blog, Mind Mints.

2014 marks Makana’s 25th Anniversary of playing guitar. To celebrate, Makana performed at summer festivals in Holland and France, toured to New Zealand and Australia twice, performed in concert with Grammy-winning artist Gotye and opened for Leon Russell, sold out shows from LA (Vibrato) to Seattle (Benaroya Hall), completed a year of sold-out concerts at the prestigious Kahala Hotel, released “RIPE” (fully funded by fans via Kickstarter and produced by legends Ron Nevison [Led Zeppelin • The Who] and Mitchell Froom [Crowded House • Elvis Costello]) AND “25” (a double album of 25 songs, captured fully in analog and only available at live performances), headlined concerts with two different symphonies, gave lectures and workshops on being an indie artist + the art of slack key, sang at countless environmental rallies in Hawai’i, funded and launched the brand “GOT KULEANA!” with accompanying PSAs to encourage higher voter turnouts, raised money for numerous non-profits including Surfrider, the ACLU, and The Thin Green Line Foundation (who support park rangers), started a new side project Hawaiian band honoring Gabby “Pops” Pahinui & The Sons of Hawai’i (named on the spot: “Palaka Pops”), and most memorably, got heckled by the Princess of Thailand, who brought her entire court to see him perform.

About: Works Progress Administration (WPA)

Works Progress Administration takes its name from FDR’s 1939 New Deal initiative, which put millions to work making buildings, bridges, theater, art and music. The original WPA was rooted in the values of community and creativity, and helped to keep the fire of human dignity burning through the darkest years of the Great Imposters.

WPA was born out of the musical community surrounding the legendary LA club, Largo. The members of the band had known and admired each other for years, and found themselves with a strong batch of unrecorded songs, a little down time, and a collective feeling that it might be a good idea to put something on tape.

After a chance meeting between Sean and Grammy winning recording engineer Jim Scott, the group found themselves in Scott’s studio, Plyrz, recording 17 songs live in five days. With an album mixed and mastered, the band hadn’t even chosen a name or secured management. In an era where the expectation is that a group of this experience and caliber would be something conceived by business executives, WPA came out of an authentic and vibrant musical community, and the album is a beautiful reflection of its origins.

The instant classic “Always Have My Love”, penned and sung by Glen Phillips, starts the album with a powerful dose of dual fiddles, pedal steel and piano, revealing the band’s palette from the first bar. The album continues with five more Phillips songs, plaintive and introspective tunes from Sean Watkins (“Not Sure”, “Paralyzed” and “You’re Already Gone”), commanding vocals performed by Luke Bulla on “Who’s Gonna Cry For You” and “Remember Well”, and the haunting voice of Sara Watkins on Benmont Tench’s “The Price” and the Ray Davies classic “I Go To Sleep”. Despite having four lead singers and a high level of instrumental prowess the band keeps its focus in service to the song, and creates a sound that is both timeless and unique.

Now, with a wonderful record reminiscent of “more than the sum of its parts” groups such as Fleetwood Mac, The Band, and CSNY, the founding members of WPA (Glen, Luke, and Sean) are rallying the troops for a cross-country excursion. Given that the heart of this band is found in its collective spirit, if one of the Executive Board is required at his “day job”, it’s looked at as an opportunity, not a problem. The network of talent surrounding these eight players is deep and varied, and changes in the tour lineup will provide new opportunities for collaboration and exploration, insuring that each show is a unique and inspiring event.

Having recently added electric guitar and drums, the Dirt Daubers are now poised to expand the appeal of their roots-based tunes with a whole new Swamp-Blues/Rock n Roll kick!
