Elevation

About: Elevation

Some music is meant to be epic, cinematic and sweeping; connecting to listeners across a broad spectrum of tastes and lifting them up out of the usual. Elevation is that kind of music; Rock and roll in the most classic sense of the word. Atlanta's Elevation plays to the panoramic, with a sound vast and timeless. With soaring rock at its core, the music also teases the boundaries of genre. The result is a sound big enough to fill an arena, and raw enough to put a shake in any hipster's step.

ELEVATION released their debut record “Strangelove” in April 2007, which was produced by Dan Hannon (Manchester Orchestra) and mastered by Grammy-award winning engineer Adam Ayan (Foo Fighters, Rolling Stones). The first single from that release, “Razoreyes” was remixed by Mark Endert (Maroon 5, Augustana). Shortly thereafter, ELEVATION released their debut music video for the same song, which was co-directed by the band's Nathan Smith and starred fashion-icon Kimberly Stewart. Quickly garnering over 100,000 views on YouTube, the video launched ELEVATION into the entertainment media spotlight. MTVu featured the video on their popular Freshmen video contest where it took the top honor with an unprecedented number of fan votes, which landed the video in regular rotation on MTVu. Additionally, the video aired nationally in promotion of the ACC Basketball Finals.

Touring nationally and performing with the likes Third Eye Blind, Manchester Orchestra, Everclear, Sister Hazel and others, ELEVATION has developed a strong national presence. In 2008, ELEVATION joined with Armed Forces Entertainment to do a month-long concert tour for coalition forces across the Middle East region in countries such as Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Bahrain.

In early 2009, indie music blog musicmatch.com dubbed ELEVATION one of the top bands to look out for '09. On the heels of those words, ELEVATION wasted no time living up to the press. Thefrontloader.com wrote about Strangelove, “It’s loud, it’s big, it’s rockin’, it’s emotional, and it’s really, really, catchy.”

ELEVATION was ready to begin their second LP in the summer of 2010. Not wanting to work through traditional studio sessions, the band decided to self-produce their second LP in a studio they built from the ground up in a warehouse in East Atlanta. From the start, the band decided that the record would be completely self-produced. As Nathan states, “We've all been through the traditional studio process many times. For me, there has never been a time when everyone is completely comfortable. We knew we could produce and engineer the record on our own, but wanted a place that was ours, decorated by us and built for our needs.” Andrew Averso on the album: “The songs really embody the process of making this record and emotions that have been welling up in all of us during the last year or so.”

The resulting product, “Hell or High Water” was produced exclusively by ELEVATION, mixed by CJ Eiriksson (U2, Matchbox Twenty, Jack's Mannequin) and mastered by Jeff Litpon (Arcade Fire, Wilco, LCD Soundsystem). Nathan Smith acted as the album's executive producer.

“Hell or High Water” was released in the US on June 7, 2010. A live concert film of "Hell or High Water" was released in November of 2011.

ELEVATION is Nathan Smith (Vocals), Andrew Averso (Lead Guitar), Anthony Pasqualone (Guitar), Nick Whitson (Bass) and Stephen Bailey (Drums).

Withnailus

About: Withnailus

I've been making music for many years now and, over these years, I've found my own style. I know I'll never sell millions - to be honest it's never been about that. I love what I do, it's my passion in life, and it keeps one relatively sane. Don't get me wrong, if I could make a living from it, I wouldn't say no. My big dream has always been to make one album like a "Dark side of the moon" and then disappear to a life of royalties and rumours.

JP Cormier

About: J.P. Cormier

J.P. Cormier appears from the shadows at the side of the stage—an unsmiling mountain of a man in dark glasses—and stalks almost angrily to his seat in the spotlight. He picks up his instrument, adjusts his mic stand and asks the audience: “How’re ya now?” in a rumbling baritone.

Then he starts to tell his story.

His lyrics and melodies illicit every emotion you can muster as he paints picture after picture of loves lost, towns disbanded, fishermen killed by their trade and the most important moments of his own life. His voice is surprisingly sweet and soft-sounding, completely unexpected coming from his 6’4” frame.

He begins an instrumental on one of the five or six instruments he may have on stage with him and you realize that this man is not just a singer or a songwriter. As his fingers fly, with such speed and precision, upon each instrument in turn, you get another picture—one of pure joy and boundless energy; total spiritual abandon bordering in its execution on genius. It’s a word that is used to describe him again and again.

Then just as you think you’ve seen everything, he begins to speak to the audience. He’s more comfortable now. He’s getting over the shyness he feels when meeting new people. Now he feels he can connect safely. Opening up with a few one-liners, he moves on to amusing anecdotes and true tales from his own past. Some bring a roar of laughter from the audience that can be heard outside the theatre, others bring a tear to the eye. He’s home now, his banter is easy as he draws the crowd into each song and tune. The connection is complete and he is one with his audience. Even behind his dark glasses, you can tell that he too sheds a tear when his audience does.

J.P. has a profound effect on audiences, but those who know him know his heart far exceeds his stature. His acts of random kindness in and out of the music industry are legendary. There are many stories of the “big fella” going to play for someone on their deathbed, helping fledgling artists, or generally standing up for people who couldn’t do it for themselves. He spent two weeks in the theatre of war entertaining the NATO troops in Afghanistan and is always quick to do what he can for a good cause. Maritime artists like Dave Gunning, Darren McMullen, Douglas Cameron and many others have benefited from J.P.’s assistance and patient guidance. His charity work is endless, once raising 4 tons of food for Feed Nova Scotia. A man well aware of the plight of the needy, he celebrates his birthday each year with a fundraising concert for Christmas Daddies in Cape Breton.

Accolades for J.P. have come from far and near over the years. He’s been described as “the quintessential Maritime musician” and having “the ability to make the brilliant appear effortless”. His early years playing in Nashville and the southern states have earned him high praise from folks like long time pickin’ partner and collaborator Marty Stuart, who says, “He’s just incredible, one of the best players I’ve ever seen.” Country music legend Waylon Jennings has said, “I would be proud to share the stage with this man anywhere, anytime”, and J.P.’s greatest hero, Chet Atkins has honoured him as “…one of the most important guitarists of his generation.” Closer to home, former Governor General of Canada, Adrienne Clarkson proclaimed, “What you have to say as an artist is incredibly important and a treasure to our Nation” and Gordon Lightfoot reveals, “I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Cormier.”

J.P. takes it all in stride.

He still has his ritual three beers before the show, and prefers to be outside the venue where he can smoke and talk to folks as they enter. He’s either there or hanging out backstage with the fans and fellow musicians who show up and don’t feel there’s any reason why they can’t go right back stage and see him. There are no real walls around J.P. and he likes it that way. This may be why he’s stayed so far from the mainstream. He never wanted the barriers that great fame brings between an artist and their audience. The people who listen to J.P.’s music are his lifeline and his inspiration. One man’s simple story might inspire the next great J.P. song. Another’s may be about someone whose life has been changed by something that he wrote or played. He likes to hear about these things first-hand. But if the compliments get too heavy, he’ll just look uncomfortably at the ground and say, “I didn’t write nothin’, I just held the pen.”

With all of that said though, his modesty belies a long list of accomplishments. J.P.’s impressive body of work has earned him a vast and loyal fan base around the world and he has played extensively throughout Canada, Great Britain, Europe, and the USA. His songs have been number 1 hits on American and European radio and he’s won 12 East Coast Music Awards, 5 Music Nova Scotia Awards, and a Canadian Folk Music Award. His album, Another Morning, was nominated for a Juno in 1998 and has since sold nearly 100,000 copies. Performing countless times on television and radio, J.P. released 13 solo albums since 1995 and won more than 30 awards in 20 years of fiddle, guitar, banjo, and song-writing competitions.

In the 30 years since he made his first paycheck at a “Union” gig, going professional at the tender age of 13, he’s traveled hundreds of thousands of miles spending months at a time on the road. It’s no wonder he looks a little tired sometimes!

No matter what you call him–genius, recluse, friend, foe, outgoing, unapproachable, giving, kind, or thoughtful–there is so much more beneath the surface. Celebrated as a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, producer, recording artist, teacher, collaborator, innovator, and award winner, J.P. Cormier’s talent is comparable to none. He’s praised in superlatives, but even these don’t do the man justice. The best way to get to know J.P. is to listen to his music. That is where his real heart lies. It is a world where everything is done fairly, no one wants, and there are no broken hearts allowed. In his song “The Messenger” he speaks not from himself but something much greater when he says:

“I am just the Messenger
I speak to every man
Every woman, every child
Who lives upon the land
My face is often hidden
Many do not wish to see
But when you’re in the mirror
Sometimes you look at me.”

J.P. Cormier is not to be missed. Stuff this good only comes around so often

Van Eps

About: Van Eps

Van Eps has been a mainstay in the Seattle rock scene for the last 5 years. Their sound can best be described as a “classic feel with a modern edge”, drawing influence from the Foo Fighters, ACDC, Led Zeppelin, and Jet, to name a few. Recently, with the help of producer Scott Olson (former guitarist for Heart and producer for Alice in Chains and the Deftones) and Jamie Chamberlin (video producer for Duff McKagen of Guns N’ Roses, ZZ Top, Sammy Hagar, Slash, and more) they released their first music video/single titled “Go Ahead”. They’re now back in the studio completing their second single, “Save Yourself”, which will be accompanied by another music video; they hope to release the new single in October. They love playing shows, and sharing the experience with the friends they’ve made along the way. Come out to a show and see for yourself what Van Eps is all about!

Dan Grigor

About: Dan Grigor

Dan Grigor, a 12-string virtuoso, has been playing guitar for more than 45 years. This season of his life has brought a new twist to his music. Tapping out melodies on the fret board with the right hand while chording with the left is a popular electric guitar technique. When taken to the acoustic 12-string, it requires an additional level of skill and talent, but as the finger ballet unfolds, it brings about a delightfully visual listening experience.

Refreshingly smart poetry accompanies the music and touches places in our hearts, our minds and our middles. Known for his wordplay and lyrical vocabulary, Grigor creates songs that say with few words the things we all feel. Then there’s the voice, the full, rich D-below-middle-C, back-of-the-room voice of experience. A voice familiar with love and life as well as pain and loss, the poetry articulates the beating of our hearts.

If you get a chance to see a live show, do it. The funny and incredibly talented Grigor entertains us by being himself. You feel as if you’ve made a new friend, or found an old one.

A prolific singer/songwriter, Dan Grigor has recently teamed with talented percussionist Ric Tortorete and bassist Mike Mountain for a captivating blues fusion experience. They are comfortable playing acoustic to provide captivating "small stage" entertainment guaranteed to make a dining experience or reception a truly special occasion, or plugging in and cranking it up to get feet tapping. Call For Info keeps the guests smiling and the glasses clinking without clashing with the flow of the environment, whether casual and boisterous or sophisticated fine dining.

Grigor has played and recorded with rock stars and for films and documentaries. He appears on several CDs including his own "Floating," available on his website, www.dangrigor.com.

Dan prefers Larrivee guitars, John Pearse strings and is also sponsored by and endorses JHAudio, Mey Chair Systems, and G7th Capo Company.

Dan also serves as the Publisher, Senior Writer and Videographer for BareFootMusicNews.com and its sister publications

Heidi Browne

About: Heidi Browne

Selected by BBC Introducing as one of 25 unsigned UK acts tipped for success Heidi attended a musician's masterclass at Abbey Road and was met with high praise from Radio 2's Tom Robinson. In 2014 Heidi went on to beat off over 9,000 competitors, crowned the overall winner of OpenMicUK winning a £5000 artist development deal. Heidi Browne's first two albums were aired on BBC Radio1, BBC 6Music, Amazing Radio, with 'Lost in Grey' tipped a 'stand-out release' by The Musician Magazine. Heidi released her highly acclaimed third album 'White Rabbits' in Spring 2015 and during her European album launch tour encompassing Belgium, Holland, Germany, Denmark and Luxembourg she played live on national German and Luxembourgian radio, partaking in bilingual interviews. Heidi's Summer single 'Colouring Outside The Lines' was chosen as 'song of the month' regionally and has been played nation wide in the UK. Following a jam packed British tour she debuts in France this September.

BACKGROUND

No stranger to performance, Heidi has been touring the UK since the age of 16. After studying classical violin and flute as a child she soon moved towards popular music and took up guitar and piano, writing songs from an early age. Heidi's father is a professional musician and toured with Kate Bush and Barclay James Harvest.

GENRE

Heidi Browne's music ranges in genre from rootsy-pop to jazzy-folk, seasoned with reggae influences and a touch of the theatrical. Drawing inspiration from many sources, Heidi's creative flair spans into the visual arts as can be seen in her animated video for song 'Paris.' The song was an instant hit on soundcloud, reaching 100,000 hits in a matter of months. Thea Gilmore tweeted that 'Paris' would be the "best £1 you'll ever spend".

W.U.M. PRESS:

I was in music heaven today after visiting Heidi Browne’s Souncloud page to catch up on some of the music I’ve missed over the past few months. The experience was pure joy as I was treated to one great song after another with subtle jazzy blues tunes like "Autocannibal", "Make My Heart", & "Sorry's too Late". I felt as though I’d stumbled into this secret music world where every sound was in tune with my frequency. Such wonderful music to discover today and yet, it all began with Paris in 2013…“Heidi Browne” is, without question, one of the very best female singer songwriters in the World today. ~ Stewart Brennan, World United Music
